I like them both. 7.62x39 definitely more punch than 556. That's undeniable. They both have their pros and cons as a military cartridge. If I was deer hunting, between the two, I would choose the 7.62x39. A good test in that realm would be 7,62x39 vs 30-30.
The humble but EXCELLENT 122 grain steel case Tula ‘holler points play a key role in my home/property defense regimen.. Truly devastating round, and just as importantly, a round that’s been reliable every single time in every tool I’ve ever fired them thru. Nothing wrong with that .223 either… can’t go wrong with either one if you looking towards a rifle for defense
This was a very good test, either one would be just fine. I have both and enjoy them both equally so the way I would choose is what I was intending on doing, 100 yds. or less AK. Over 100 AR. either one would be devastating. I know you said you really enjoy doing these jelly tests and I believe you cause to have that kind of patience and dedication to cutting it up and cleaning out the mess and remelting and the time it takes to get it perfect each time is commendable. Have a good one my friend and I will see you on the next one.
Interesting that's the opposite of what I hear from soldiers in combat, their complaints are mainly that the AR can't reach out to the same distances (say over 800yds) with any significant wound chance while the AK does it easily...
@@shmoop357 just one problem with your hypothesis: US issued rifle sights only go to 500 or 600m. Ak47 sights have bdc out to 1000. Regardless of the actual bullet capabilities, you're going to get more hits at 800m if your sight can actually aim there
Gotta admit, I’m an AK guy. Something about old school hardware shooting steel case. Great test Tools, It really proved either one would get the job done.
Good video. I like to use my ak for hunting and home defense. I use some 154 grain soft points and they are devastating on any kind of soft tissue, plus they weigh enough that they penetrate exceptionally well.
Good comparison and Jelly test. I have taken deer with the 70 grain Barnes TSX and 65 grain soft point in my 5.56 AR. And with my AR 15 7.62x39 Hornady 123 soft point. I prefer the 7.62 x 39 123 soft point for deer. Thanks for the video and information
7.62 X 39mm will always out penetrate the 5.56mm when they use similar constructed bullets. It's capable of using bullets that are far heavier than the 5.56mm can be loaded with. This is most apparent when deer hunting. Yes, a 5.56 will get it done with price placement at fairly close range but don't try a quartering away shot because hunting bullets made for the 5.56 wont be able to penetrate a large deer sufficiently to make it to the vitals. 7.62 X 39mm can make it to the vitals from any angle with proper hunting ammo
My friend used a 223 bolt action rifle 62gr for hunting deer & the deer ran away never to be found after being hit in the vitals! I couldn't believe my eyes.
@@perplexingperceptions8888 Unless the deer is close and the projectile is designed for deer hunting, and the shot is precise many deer are wounded by the 223/5.56. (Not just the 223/5.56. Other cals too with improper bullets and shot angles not providing adequate penetration) I've heard a few state that best 223/5.56 scenario is a heavier (62 gr or more) bullet designed for deer hunting at no more than 75 yards on a calm deer, shot at the top of the neck where it intersects the skull. Sounded like good advice
From the movie O Brother, "I'm with you boys" Lol. Awesome match up, I like them both. I've had an SKS for a long time, bought it for under $150 at Roses some years ago. I guess that I would lean more towards it. It was a lot cheaper than my AR, ammo was always cheaper, and now this test really looked to me like it was the winner. Thanks Tools,
having owned both i still prefer my AR platform overall for weight and versatility, BUT, i love the simple breakdown ,maintenance and minimal parts of the AK/SKS platforms.
My RK had tons of it in .223 a while back. I really didn't want another fragmenting round so I didn't pick any of it up. I did pick up some Barnes TSX expanding hollow points in .223 though.
I would use an AK because if I had to shoot, I would shoot at short distance, and the AK hit harder. In home defense situation, you shoot pretty close range.
This is America, nothing saying we can't have 1 or 2, (or more) of each flavor! 😂 one of these big ammo companies needs to pay you for coming up with the term, "fragspanding rounds" 👍 good match up video!
I have a 7.62x54R Mosin-Nagant which is more of an Elk rifle but I figure I can get some 123 grain soft points and load them down to about 2400-2500 fps for a nice manageable load. Could even make up some milder loads with bullets intended for 327 Fed.
Have used that Federal load for years with satisfaction. Accurate and works great on small to medium vermin. Have always been suspicious those Wolf 7.62x39 hollowpoints wouldn't open up. Glad to know they will.
Gotta keep an eye out for that fragspanding 💣🔫ammunition, sounds like some good stuff lol. I enjoy all the Jelly tests but rifle rounds are certainly my favorite. Thank you for another awesome one bro.

i sure wasn't expecting them to do that....i would have thought they would have held together better...but i got to admit it would be a heckva mess in a deer or other target kinda that size..frags. everywhere
I have seen tons of comments from those good ol southern hogg hunters and they all seem to prefer soft point to hollow points in their AKs. If you can drop a crazy ass charging boar in its tracks, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with unwanted crackheads on your property.
I'm a bit surprised by the performance of the Tula HP. Many of the commie round HP's are there for show only. Glad I stocked up on the Tula HP's when RK had them for $12.99/40. 🙂 I have an AK & some SKS's, but am also a cheater like the guy below. 7.62x39 BCA upper on an Anderson AR lower. Awesome video as always!! The last 308 jelly time video, just WOW! (Received my Tools Giveaway prize really fast! It’s awesome Tools, thanks! Professionally packaged man and sent Priority mail $$ 1st class all the way!)
I like the bigger boolot but I would like either one or both lol i see a lot more 5.56 and 223 on the shelf around here that ultimately could persuade me to choose the AR! Dirty Jelly Time!! :D
It would be cool to see what a Minie ball round would do to the jelly contraption. I've heard it had MASSIVE wound cavitation back in the olden days when it was used.
Another good test, Tools, although the outcome was predictable. The neck on the AR shot was very short and the bullet fragmented quickly as one would expect with varmint ammo. The AK penetrated quite a distance before fragmenting but the wound track was much larger, as one would expect with anti personnel ammo. Hornady does make a varmint bullet for the AK but when it comes to varmints one usually requires a bit more accuracy than the AK can be expected to provide! So this one was kind of apples to oranges when it comes to the ammo types but there are a lot of folks who think that varmint ammo for SD is ok, this should show them that it is not the best option! Cheers, jc
Depending on the application, but if we are saying this ammo in these guns for personal protection or medium game hunting. I’d go with the AK. Now, if we were to test with a shorter barrel length or consider small game or varmint control, the AR would take the lead. In general, I’m an AR guy myself.
I don't think it matters either of these in the guts/chest/neck or head you ain't getting back up But my preference for defence is for the round to have explosive fragmentation early and about 10 to 14 to inches max
Those 50 gr Federal loads area varmint load, designed to expand quickly for quick kills on small animals. The AK round was designed for larger animals. The deeper penetration before expansion starts. Try comparing a 65 gr or heavier bullet in the AR to compare to those AK loads.
Yeah, I used these just because they were given to me to test a while back, and I realized I hadn't used em yet. I have plenty more "defensive" type rounds I plan on testing out of the AR for sure.😎👍
@@ToolsandTargets I went the best of both worlds route. Picked up a PSA KS-47, Like the CMMG Mutant. AR with a modified lower that takes AK mags. Been real impressed with 100 yard accuracy. It is what I am hunting with till I take a deer. Using hand rolled 123gr SST bullets
If I had to choose one of the two, it would depend on what I was using them for. If I want the more accurate rifle for target shooting or if I was a sniper in the military, obviously the AR-15 would be my choice, but if I wanted a general combat rifle, I would not hesitate to pick the AK for its reliability. I would just want a rifle that is darn guaranteed to always shoot every time I pull the trigger no matter what the conditions are.
Good stuff. This is a great demo on why you dont use varmit rounds for defense. Too little penetration. A heavier 62 or 64gr bonded SP or 68gr or heavier bthp are deeper penetration and nasty.
Yep. I only used these because I still had em sitting around that someone had sent to me to test. I got some much fancier stuff I'm gonna test soon for sure.
I saw a recent video showing six AR bolts with one or more locking lugs sheared off of them. For the life of me I've yet to find a video showing an AK with any kind of bolt failure , or any other catastrophic parts failure of any kind.
I've shot both AR's and AK's and I like both of them, but from my experience an AK will do better at 200 yards or less and the AR outdoes the AK (marginally) at beyond 200 yards. Both will do the job so I guess it boils down to personal preference. I prefer the AR only because it's generally lighter and so is the ammo, but I certainly wouldn't feel "under armed" with the AK. Another great video Tools!
Bullet choice would be critical in both these cartridges, I would not use a hollow point in either for hunting or battle, I would prefer a soft point in both for hunting or battle but with a SP I expect the AR would give you equal or more penetrattion
you can't go wrong with each one. Ar is lighter, faster trigger, and easy to mount optics, lights, lasers also low recoil but reality is that the cheap ak round is really effective for all purposes up to 200 mt (220 yds). yes a 300 blk or 6.5 grendel ARs are probably better for CQB or DMR, but ammo bill is more than double and quality AKs run everytime , everywhere. If i have to pick only 1 rifle ... AK, and i love ARs too cause in italy we have rally good AKMs izhmash sub MOA certified for less than S&W M&P 15. What about a cmmg 47 ?
Would have to agree for the most part as much as I love my AR's. The AK is just so incredibly reliable and capable for most situations you're gonna see yourself in and more.👍
Now you know I'm gonna catch S%!% for saying this but I love my AK and to me it performed better. OK OK everybody calm down! That said... In a SHTF scenario I'm grabbing my AR! Parts are readily available and so is ammo! But to me, the AK definitely performed better! LOL Great video as always Brother! Really enjoyed this one!
People love to rate the AR higher than the ak bc of the availability of parts. That’s also one of the top reasons why the AK is better than the AR. It’s one of the most important reasons that makes the AK more reliable and superior. Less moving parts. The AR has a lot of parts to worry about. In a true, real shtf scenario, nobody has no idea if they will be able to get the needed parts if their rifle goes down. Simplicity= reliability. Plus the AK is just more gangster and tougher
Both excellent...I won't say why, but... Piggies I've met, recommend 7.62X39 125gr Soft Points and 154gr. Soft Points. For domesticated ( home) defense, fragmenting are preferred. Flung from a premium AR 15 build, hard to beat. Highly recommended.
@@ToolsandTargets I only had a few 5.56 in soft points, a local military base armorer gave me decades ago. So, recently, I procured a case of Barnaul 55gr. Soft point boat tails. Paid more than I wanted, $171.00 for the 500, but, comparable in brass, is $1.50 and up per round, so 34 cents and shipping was still a no brainer. Unless you make it your business to find soft points in 5.56/.223, you normally never see them at the usual places. Btw, I liked very much the .223 MUSHROOM on today's Jelly Time feature. As usual, you're killin' us, figuratively speaking. Also, the deciduous forestation is especially eye pleasing.
@@ToolsandTargets I'm used to that too. The condo on the mountain top I had for decades, overlooking at neatly 4,000 ft. were beautiful on a given evening, as dark thirty decended, and next morning, peering out, the maples were stripped clean bare, lol. I used to have ten pointers under my.porch, enjoying the winter rye, the only green in the area, and bears rattling what they stole from the dumpsters. Locked lids solved that problem. You're in God's Country.
Like your videos. What I'd like to see is the difference in gel between 7.62x39 hp vs 7.62x39 sp and you could throw a fmj while you're at it just for a comparison
To be honest , I'll take whichever is cheaper when I can afford to get one .. I have my sidearm & shoty covered .. can't decide on a bolt action or ar/ak for my next purchase .. another great video as usual ..
If all I had to choose from was these two rounds, team AK for sure. If I can have IMI 77 grain “Razor Core” for my AR, then I’m on team AR. You ever test IMI 77 grain Razor Core? That would be a more competitive test against the Tula 122 grain 7.62x39mm HP you have here. Although at such close range, the AK may still come out on top…the advantage of the AR with the 77 grain stuff - especially with a 20” barrel as Mr. Stoner originally intended - is what it can do at distance; past 100 yards it would probably be superior to the 7.62x39mm. What say you, T&T?
If I was shooting varmints, I'd pick the varmint round of the two you tested. Between an AK and an AR, I'm team AR, with 62 grain hollow points, or 55 gr FMJ in a pinch. If you limited me to 50 grain varmint rounds, I'd go with Comrade AK.
Both work but with AR you can change so many things especially caliber. I think both expanded well but there are better projectiles for both. Maybe try a 75 grain in 5.56. Glad I don't have to clean the gel. 👍
Yeah, I have some real nice .223/5.56 stuff for defense that I'm gonna test soon. Just realized I had never used these that were sent to me so figured I would start simple.
My hog gun of choice, one that has killed likely hundreds of hogs by now, my AR15 chambered in 7.62x39.... 16" Aero m4e and R-one handguard with a tool craft bolt, Rra 2 stage varmit, and an xmas special $50 bca heavy barrel. Love the damn thing.
@@trusttheprocess7200 i had a lengthy reply, but I guess YT didnt like it. Basically only use 30rnd CPD mags. ASC is fine for 10rnd. Get a bcg with an enhanced firing pin. RTB had bolts and pins on sale for $40 last week for a 223 carrier. Dont use light springs. Combloc surplus ammo has really hard primers. With an enhanced pin (most important) and a RRA 2 stage, no issues with any ammo.
Not shot either one but think I would go ak for heavier bullet and a tough durable platform. Like your "term" probably need the patent, would gotta mo gelly & ammo at very least.

Depending on the application, but if we are saying this ammo in these guns for personal protection or medium game hunting. I’d go with the AK. Now, if we were to test with a shorter barrel length or consider small game or varmint control, the AR would take the lead. In general, I’m an AR guy myself.
Agreed. The ammo and tool choice definitely makes a big difference.😎👍
Shorter barrel 7.62 is far superior 556 is only good with velocity
I don't think it matters either of these in the guts/chest/neck or head you ain't getting back up
But my preference for defence is for the round to have explosive fragmentation early and about 10 to 14 to inches max
Amen to that. Even a plain old fmj from these is gonna make somethin stop, drop and roll.
For all around general purpose ( Home defense to hunting ) 7.62x39 is hard to go wrong with.
It really is and I'm a huge AR lover.
I love 5.56 but that A.K. tract is hard to ignore!!
It really is.
Kinda like my opinion on revolvers or semi autos........I like them both. 👍👍Thanks for the video.
I like that opinion!👍
Both. I have a M&P 223 and a Russian AK with 5-50r magazine
😎👍
Thanks for the video. A fun Gelly test.
Thank you sir.😎
I have both calibers (in AR platforms) and like em both.
Hard to wrong with either one.👍
@@ToolsandTargets no complaints. Great stuff as always buddy
@@ETuss713 Thank you sir.😎👍
I have one of each but I like my AK better. The AR is more accurate though. Great jelly test.
Thank you sir.😎
Great video. I am binge watching your videos, i love your tests. Personally, which round do you prefer for home defense out of these teo?
Appreciate that! I use an AR in .5.56 mostly just because I have it set up and use it more, but these 7.62 rounds are no joke.
I saw a recent video showing six AR bolts with one or more locking lugs sheared off of them.
For the life of me I've yet to find a video showing an AK with any kind of bolt failure , or any other catastrophic parts failure of any kind.
They're definitely made like a tank.👍
Maybe save the rifle tests for yellowing blocks but I would love to see more cheap 7.62x39 tests
😎👍
BIG HOSS I can't believe I missed this one. Great video brother. The battle of the titans
Thank you sir.😎👊
I like using TULA ammo in my LR-308
Go's throw 3/8 steel like butter 🧈
I'm very impressed with your video 📹👍🏽
Thank you sir.😎👊
Tools awesome video both has there place really no need to pick a side just have fun at the range or out in the woods 😀
Thank you sir. Definitely about havin fun!
I'm considering a BCA AK15 lower build, I already have a 10'' and 16'' upper....
😎👍
Honestly only difference I saw is the .223 started expanding before the 7.62x39 which is why I’d prefer it for personal defense
Thank you sir. They're both awesome!
Bullet choice would be critical in both these cartridges, I would not use a hollow point in either for hunting or battle, I would prefer a soft point in both for hunting or battle but with a SP I expect the AR would give you equal or more penetrattion
Agreed.👍
Great video! I like the 7.62x39
Thank you sir.😎
Hi Tools, can you test some Tula 154 grain soft points? Thanks for the great videos!
I should be able to do that.👍
I dont know which would be better cause of availibility though. and ultimately its up to the individual
Definitely. I'll take the one that's within reach and has a full mag.👍
My decision would based on which one I had more ammo for at the time . Since I have 1.000s of rounds of AK steel core I'm on team AK !
Can't argue with that logic!😎👍
My Ruger mini 30 is one of my favorites.shoots the the tula no problems
The AK loves it!
I have both. Everyone should.
you can't go wrong with each one. AK, and i love ARs too
cause in italy we have rally good AKMs izhmash sub MOA certified for less than S&W M&P 15.
What about a cmmg 47 ?
Would have to agree for the most part as much as I love my AR's. The AK is just so incredibly reliable and capable for most situations you're gonna see yourself in and more.👍
My ALG trigger in my Zpap is pretty fast too
You just came up with a lot of t shirt ideas. Hot Mess, What Camp Are You In, Camp AR, Camp AK, Jumpin’ Jelly, Rockin That Jelly, Fragspanding.
Don't forget "Fragspanding!" 😆
The Ak hollerpoint was so devastating the jelly contraption couldn’t contain it all.
Big powah!
Hey Tools, I have to go with AR. all day long. Thanks
Gotta love an AR!
I'm holding back the crowd with the pitchforks but they're starting to break through!😂😂😂 Appreciate ya!
@@ToolsandTargets I know you are! LMFAO
I'm definitely gonna test some more AR and AK rounds soon.😎
@@ToolsandTargets
I only had a few 5.56 in soft points, a local military base armorer gave me decades ago.
@@boogerdog5247 Very nice. Sadly, the leaves are almost all gone already thanks to the winds we've been having.😆
@@ToolsandTargets
I'm used to that too.
Great video tools.major damage with both ar and ak
Thank you brother. They both brought it!
Hmmm, Someday, I’ll need to get me an AK-47 model. Nice test.
Thank you sir.😎
Love both systems. So I have both.
Great video very informative 👍🏻
Thank you again!😎👍
Like your videos. What I'd like to see is the difference in gel between 7.62x39 hp vs 7.62x39 sp and you could throw a fmj while you're at it just for a comparison
Thank you sir. I can definitely do that. I need to do more rifle tests anyway.
To be honest , I'll take whichever is cheaper when I can afford to get one .. I have my sidearm & shoty covered .. can't decide on a bolt action or ar/ak for my next purchase .. another great video as usual ..
Thank you sir. You can't go wrong either way!
Ammo definitely makes a big difference.👍
Both work but with AR you can change so many things especially caliber. I think both expanded well but there are better projectiles for both. Maybe try a 75 grain in 5.56. Glad I don't have to clean the gel. 👍
Yeah, I have some real nice .223/5.56 stuff for defense that I'm gonna test soon. Just realized I had never used these that were sent to me so figured I would start simple.
@@ToolsandTargets If it fragments or expands quick won't matter unless it's the neighbors 2,000 lb bull. Then just keep shooting & Run Faster Forrest.
@@billdye3530 🐂🐂🐂

Fir5 ak
Either one of those rounds would mess you up . That AR wound channel was quick and impressive.

I heard ARs that are chambered in 7.62 have a bunch of problems. I guess ARs just have trouble with that caliber. Have you had any problems?
Cheater!😜
@@trusttheprocess7200 i had a lengthy reply, but I guess YT didnt like it.
Basically only use 30rnd CPD mags. ASC is fine for 10rnd. Get a bcg with an enhanced firing pin. RTB had bolts and pins on sale for $40 last week for a 223 carrier. Dont use light springs. Combloc surplus ammo has really hard primers. With an enhanced pin (most important) and a RRA 2 stage, no issues with any ammo.
@@ETuss713 thanks for the advice
I use a AR 15 in 556 but using my hot 223 reloads. Last trip to Texas I personally took 150 hogs. With those I'm up to over 700.
Another Great Jelly Test Tools I like them Both Stay Safe Stay 2A Strong 🇺🇸
Thank you sir.😎👊
I'm "which ever I can get to first" team🤣🤣🤣👍🏾You really can't go wrong with either depending on the application.
Amen to that!
My man's made sure he figured out who sent them rounds. Never change tools.
😎👊
Team Ar for me love the test tools i think the ak's grain weight had alot to do with the bigger wound channel
And the length of penetration...
Definitely. Appreciate ya brother.
Not shot either one but think I would go ak for heavier bullet and a tough durable platform. Like your "term" probably need the patent, would gotta mo gelly & ammo at very least.
Fragspanding!💥😎💥
Hey tools I prefer ar seem to b more accurate way out there and easier to carry more of that ammo and lot more styles of bullets for 223 another good test👍
Thank you sir. Love me an AR!
