They were muslims but Jahangir mother grandmother were Rajputs , this lead to their decline , They became too much obsessed with themselves left the Empire in ruin both financially and administratively. , They wanted to project themselves as secular Rulers celebrated both Eid and holi diwali , now look at their legacy Muslims don't know them hindus hate them .

According to ", The White Mughals" by William Dalrymple, there were hardly any Muslim among such "awam" or poor people, because all the musalman bore rank and file of royalties or the army. All the poor awam were non muslims who found no place except in bureaucracy because they only knew the art of letters.
There was a sizable muslim population in India at that time as well. But of course there were other religions as well. The thing with history is that we need to be mindful of the author's and their own biases as well. Hence it's best to look into multiple references and then draw your conclusion

technically mughals were also colonizers
They weren't because a colonizer send the richest to his native lands but mughals got permanently settled in India and made it their country. However we have a habit of declaring all Muslims as colonizers.
