I've gapped many a piston ring on my old Triumph motorbikes, And got it wrong, not much fun on the second rebuild, lesson learnt I still check the gap no matter what I am working on.
When I looked though the old census records I did see at the turn of the 20th C one of my great, greats was a 'steam engine engineer' Today that would be a stoker.....
The famous ridges... I rather bore them to 0.60 and fit a top hat liner. And yes i want to have a scraper to deal with the ridges. But on a 300tdi, why do they have the three water channels between the cylinders and holes for the pushrods? The gasket has the holes too but the head does not. Would brazing the holes shut stop the risk of a failed head gasket?
I only got a regular composite gasket in the rebuild package, with three holes so i believe the head had the final skim. I might get some engineering blue and see if it is warped. I like the 2.25 and 2.5 engines better if i am honest.
Does anyone measure the gap between the rings and the piston's ring lands anymore (especially when reusing old pistons) or is that no longer an issue due to modern metals / machining?
Hey mike can you show people diff between 200 and 300tdi piston tops. Perhaps its possible putting 300tdi head onto 200 tdi block which would require 300tdi pistons if someone was going that way?
There is more to it than just pistons The injectors are different too - the threads on the top are not the same so you would have to have made custom injector pipes AND tuned also as all injector pipes are exactly the same length Manifolds are different too And that is just off the top of my head Mike

How times have changed eh?
A Rolf Harris joke? Well... You started. Jim fixed it for me! First he let me meet Rolf Harris, then i got a blindfold and i milked a cow.
OH DEAR....
...bloody hell, you took me so far back there I was expecting you to talk about de-coking.... :D
can you de-coke a steam engine?
I think that is my era..
Lmfao!

...my old man was a stoker (fireman) on the railways way back when....it's a small world
Who would do that today Eric?
11:34 "There is a guy in town who replaces his Subaru engine every week..." 🤣🤣🤣 while, me thinking my 300 Tdi engine is "fragile" 🤔
And he's really fed up about it !
Hi Mike
What material are 300Tdi rings made form? Iron?
The oil control is cast iron but the top rings are steel I believe

Use the multi layer metal gasket and it will never go

Would you ever do a td5?

I have not done it for years but see roversteve's comment on his Triumph
