The song is over 1000 years old. Shum is an Old Slavic god of the forest and at the same time this is a ritual song for invoking spring after a long winter, and at the same time an allegory of getting rid of a long covid anxiety. But It is much more deeper and bigger then just words. It is calling of our (not only ukrainian) roots. Thats why all of us love it!

This is a very old traditional song for invoking spring. The Shum (noise) in this song is a mythological personage, the spirit of the forest ( and his name Shum means sounds and voices of the forest) When people sing this song (it calls vesnyanka from the name of vesna - spring) , make noise and dance, they call on this spirit, and he rather brings spring.This is the meaning of this song. The tempo grows all the time, reaching a peak, as in ritual songs and dances of many nations.
She sings that she sows hemp. And the dancers imitate sowing seeds in their hands. Hemp was very important to Ukrainians. They made clothes, oil, food, ropes, medicine and much more from it.
The singer's green clothes mean the green fur coat of the spirit of the forest Shum (like a forest has green colour of leaves and grass) . Around her, the musicians form a kind of magic circle.And the dancers are holding circles of light. All these are symbols of the Sun . And the Sun rises on the stagescreen too. And then it explodes, crumbling into thousands of pieces. And the explosion of the Sun in the stagevideo reminds us of Chornodyl tragedy. And this means that nature is important for humans, that we need to be careful and respect it.
The official video clip for this song was shot in Chornobyl (now its empty town that why it looks like postapocalyptic times),where the reactor exploded. This is symbolic, because wildlife is now being revived and renewed there. And the song itself also has roots in this region of Ukraine.
People dancing near the singer symbolize the power of nature, which wakes up after winter and after any disasters.
And also it is about coronavirus too. Kate throws out her mask, which symbolizes the victory of the virus. 💪
The solar rituals of invoking spring and the sun are not only in the Ukrainian tradition, but also in the traditions of many nations of Europe and the World. And this is what fights us closer to each other.

This song’s words connected to old Ukrainian traditions- calling spring songs . Шум in Ukrainian nowadays meaning translating as noise. But it’s also name of forest god in old Ukrainian traditions.

Shum - ancient Ukrainian spring dancing game, which consists of two stages: weaving and unweaving of Shum (witch also one of spring demigods, dedicated to plants growth). When Shum is "weaving", pairs of dancers staying in semicircle, one pair forming "gates" with their hands and all other pairs crossing the "gates". When last one passed, "gates" changed direction of pairs moving, this is called "unweaving" shum: "gates" pair creat new "gates" with opposites hands and all pairs crossing it again and game continues, but faster and faster.
Songs, singing when shum continuously weaving and unweaving is one of vesniankas - Ukrainian folk songs, dedicated to Spring and Rebirth of Nature. So many of them about sift and winnow, because all grasses planting during warm spring days. Hemps and vinka - two of them. Hemps is the herb, using for weaving and symbol of female fertility, vinka is ancient symbol of rebith and male fertility, so that's why they together in this song😉

Shum commonly translates as noise but here it’s about an ancient tradition from Ukrainian mythology where Shum is a forest god and if you dance for Shum spring will come faster.
