George Hotz: Fully Self-Driving Cars Are a 'Scam' and Silicon Valley 'Needs To Die'

  • The hacking wunderkind thinks Big Tech's approach won't work. He built a $999 autonomous driving system that runs on a smartphone.

    ----------------
It seems like self-driving cars have been five years away for at least 15 years. But now, major players in the industry-like Google spinoff Waymo, GM self-driving unit Cruise, and upstart Zoox-are promising that fleets of fully autonomous taxis are just about to roll out.
"It's a scam," says George Hotz, the 30-year-old hacker-slash-entrepreneur best known as the first person to jailbreak the original iPhone when he was 17. "No one's close."
Hotz points out that every system on the road today requires the driver to pay attention at all times and be ready to take over. He says that companies touting fully self-driving cars without human safety monitors-and sometimes without steering wheels or pedals-are offering nothing more than a "press demo."
Hotz started Comma.ai in 2015 to upend what he views as Big Tech's wasteful and shortsighted approach to self-driving vehicles. Instead of building specialized cars that rely on expensive sensors and follow laser-mapped routes, Comma.ai has created an autonomous driving system that runs on a smartphone, works on most vehicles sold in America, and requires no additional hardware.
The company's first truly all-in-one device, the $999 Comma 2, packs a modified smartphone and other hardware into one slim plastic casing, which Hotz 3D-prints in the garage of Comma.ai's office in San Diego. Mount it to your windshield, plug it into your car's OBD-II port, and Comma's OpenPilot software can take the wheel. The Comma 2 uses the phone's cameras and taps into the built-in RADAR and drive-by-wire systems contained in cars built after 2012, automatically turning the steering wheel and operating the gas and brakes.
Hotz says his company has spent $8.1 million thus far and is profitable, while the big players in the self-driving space have spent billions without offering an economically viable product. While his competitors vie to dominate the market with proprietary technology and ridesharing platforms, Hotz is focused on building an open-source, decentralized ecosystem for driverless technology.
When I first spoke with Hotz in the summer of 2017, he predicted that by 2020, cars would take their own wheels for large stretches without humans paying attention and that by 2022 they would achieve full self-driving ability in limited areas.
"None of that's true," he says now. "Profitable robo-taxis are still a decade away."
Hotz thinks the automated vehicle industry has surrendered to what he views as the vices of modern Silicon Valley, focusing on growth and hype rather than delivering truly innovative products. To find out why he's soured on the space and to take the Comma 2 for a test drive, I caught up with Hotz at the Airbnb Comma.ai rented off the Las Vegas Strip during CES, the largest consumer electronics show in the world.

Because you're a guillible idiot. The guy is a narcissist. His system is no more than an extended cruise control - it has nothing to do with the research into autonomous driving spearheaded by Google and Co.

      @Zeakthecat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@MrCmon113 so i take it you don't know or never really watched the video that he admits now his device is a advanced driver assist.
the problem is your projecting onto holtz what you don't know, is basically one of many reasons a decentralized culture needs to come.
i can literally tell that in your own comment, its so easy to read between the lines its pretty stupid. "hes a narrissist!", and what if holtz is right this time? what if in four years from now, in a 2024 interview with reasonTV, almost every one of his predictions comes true?
every human makes mistakes, we learn from them, grow and evolve, you hate holtz fine, however don't be so blind by hatred of someone to not recognize the good someone is doing, and it sounds to me like you are blinded by hatred of holtz because he said the wrong things 4 years ago.
do you honestly think a super hacker like holtz is a narcissist, because he unlocked the iphone at 17, jailbreaked the ps3, and even is proud of what hes learned and achieved?
thats not narcissistic behavior, i personally witnessed that behavior, my own mother has that trait, this dude does not exibit that behavior, instead hes actually correct on many key issues with central planning. in fact, hes more knowledgeable about the world since the 2016 interview, which tells me hes the type of person to KEEP ON LEARNING!
humans like innovation by design, its nothing new, the automobile took off and new roads and entire freeways had to be built dude to that demand.
self driving cars can be hacked, the computer can break down for the autopliot functions halfway into a drive, and cause a serious accident, and then you have the possibility of someone getting a glitchy computer in a car or getting a defective product in a car and nobody doing anything to stop the car from killing someone.
all you need is one accident in any self proclaimed "fully automonous vehicle" and no regulator would bat a eye, they would just get paid these millions.
innovation has to keep going for any company to be successful, government regulatory agencies limit that heavily to the point in some industries only the big guys can easily cut through the red tape and not get into any legal trouble.

      1) The facts disagree with some of Hotz' expressions though.
For example, Hotz says: "Waymo drivers must pay attention":
      th-cam.com/video/Nnh5TQ60hek/w-d-xo.html
      2) However, Waymo has versions with 0 drivers with no-one allowed in driver's seat, and this was public knowledge before the date of the video above where he makes this claim.
      3) In fact, Waymo's latest version stops the car if anyone touches steering wheel or pedals, and there is no one in driver's seat: (actual level 4 autonomy)
      th-cam.com/video/__EoOvVkEMo/w-d-xo.html
      4) Albeit, comma two is cool, and I plan to buy one for my civic hatch sport touring 2017.

No the product is you have a fleet of heat pumps, monitor their behavior and write a script that generates similar looking curves. This is obvious when talking about AI. ^This! I'm sitting here watching this telling myself why would I want a driverless car that requires a driver? That's insanely dumb. If you have to pay attention the whole time, just as if you were driving, what the f is the point? In fact it can become even more harrowing, because many times you will be wondering, will the car(computer) do X, will it appropriately respond to X situation? This driverless car future is a crock.

What you are talking about is the driving equivalent of a train or escalator. Current road driving is hugely complex. And given the near impossibility of removing all bugs from any software, it is basically guaranteed that something which looks like a car that drives on current roads with an automated pilot will cause accidents. The infrastructure costs to make roads act like railroads is highly prohibitive.. which is why I don't think we'll see anything like what you are describing ever. It violates both technical precepts AND economic principles. It is neither technically feasible nor economically affordable.
Worse.. as one of the segments above touches on.. you do NOT want to give people a sense of false security. From my perspective, they shouldn't even be adding systems like this to autos. The morons that trust too much will end up getting themselves into trouble (which we have evidence of right now). Things that can go 50 miles per hour and kill people must be designed for the lowest common denominator. They must ASSUME distraction is part of the equation. Right now we have folks driving distracted without automatic systems and killing folks on the road. The system must be designed assuming THOSE drivers are behind the wheel.

I hate the self driving agenda. It takes away your freedom to drive and do and go anywhere you want. Everywhere you go and everything you speak will recorded in data.
Even if you drive on your own and are a bit naughty like my dad. That will be data and you’ll be fined because they won’t need speed cameras. Not that you’ll drive your car because it will become illegal.
Said something against the state. Now your punished and can’t drive to work because the car has been issued with a 2 week suspension.
Gov or hacker don’t like you, great they can just hack into your system and make your crash. Good luck trying to respond to it because you won’t have a steering wheel.
Welcome to the automated future where you are completely useless and disposable. You can’t go places without permission and you need a good behavioural form in order receive basic privileges of those so programmed.
If you been naughty and got some negative points of your record, good luck buying shopping in store or online. Good luck travelling anywhere, no train or cars or planes without good state behaviour. Good luck paying for anything as it will be all digital and you guessed it, the state got control of that. Good luck working, remember they want a large majority of humans to be useless and this automated driving is the beginning of our damnation. Said something bad to a friend in the past, now your going to court and being charged because he’s a judge with unlimited power and access.

I work in industrial robotics and automation. Engineers are very arrogant. They will claim that they have a sensor for this situation, an algorithm for that situation - ALL ROBOTICS PROGRAMMING IS PRESUMPTIVE. In a factory, a robot is kept in literally a cage for several reasons. One reason is to keep people away from the robot. Another reason is to give the robot boundaries, if it hits the barrier it will overload the motors and hopefully shut the robot down - BUT most import is that the boundary around the robot is kept EXTREMELY PREDICTABLE. that is to prevent random events, people wandering in to the boundary+ area, supplies and materials falling in etc. ROBOTS CAN NOT BE PROGRAMMED FOR every possible random eventuality. A self driving car is nothing but a robot! And the average street and intersection is an INFINITELY varying environment WITH PEOPLE IN IT! The promotion of self driving cars and delivery trucks will result in dangers and death for people. If there is an emerging self driving vehicle industry it will be limited to poor areas where people have no political clout.

@@TheMachoBurrito Let's say treasury bonds yielded 10% a year. A venture capitalist might ask the question "Why should I invest in your company when I can make 10% a year with essentially zero risk?" That means that shakier startups would have trouble attracting capital. Now let's say treasury bonds are yielding 1% a year. That shakier startup can say to the investor, "What are you going to do, park your money in treasury bonds and not even keep up with inflation? If you want a chance at growing your money, you should invest in a company like mine."

    • @deepfriedsammich
      @deepfriedsammich 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@TheMachoBurrito Moreover, following on what commenter Steve Zelaznik had to say, the banks lend on the basis of comparing how much they have to lend with the potential return on their investment in the loan, discounted by analyzed risks from the business plan presented by the loan applicant. The banks are in the business to make money. When the banks loan money, they "start" at the loans with the most guarantee of paying off the best, and then work their way down the list until they reach the point where the projected likely profit from the loan, discounted by the risk of default, starts to equal the guaranteed return of leaving it in excess reserves at the Fed and drawing interest on it. Essentially, "free money" makes riskier projects (like self-driving cars, or a dot-com mania) look more plausibly likely to produce profit than an unadulterated credit market would. When the Fed plays games with the interest rates and the availability of funds, it disconnects the financial price signals from the actual time preferences of savers and investors. It obfuscates market price signals which tell savers and investors about the actual availability of real resources: capital, land, and labor. This market distortion encourages diminished savings, increased consumption, and increased investment. When the parties receiving the discounted loaned funds actually act to produce goods and services, they discover that the actual availability of real capital, land, and labor have been misrepresented and prices start to rise because businesses are competing for fewer resources than the supply of credit and money had lead everyone in the market to believe were there. When companies are forced to pay more for the resources they need, because of actual scarcity, this can end up invalidating the business plan they developed. The projected profits the plan supposed never materialize and the losses will start to be liquidated when the goods and services cannot be sold at a price that recovers the investment needed to produce and supply the goods and services. This results in a boom-bust business cycle phenomenon in the market.
This is a very rough explanation of a phenomenon referred to as the Austrian Business Cycle, so named because it was discovered by economists of the so called "Austrian School," mostly grounded in the works of economists Eugen Böhm von Bawerk, Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, etc. If you want to know more about this theory, I recommend visiting Mises.org where there are loads of online resources for learning about economics. Ludwig von Mises was the discoverer of the Economic Calculation Problem in the early 1920's, and he correctly predicted that the Soviet Union would fail because of the impossibility of economic calculation under socialism.

The distributed web isn’t yet ready to do everything the regular web can do, but, a whole lot of very smart people are working towards it and making real progress. I would not be at all surprised if 5-10 years from now, the coolest things on the internet can only be accessed via distributed web browsers, where everyone participates in making it work, and basically no centralised servers or “clouds” are involved. For many applications, it’s already possible to do, though hard. The tooling and developer experience is improving rapidly. For some applications, it’s still almost impossible, but if we can get trustless computing stuff working, we’ll be able to fully decentralise “cloud” type processing and remove the need for trusted providers like amazon and google, and quite possibly remove the need to raise money through ads to fund server infrastructure

If he can he should do that and use the billions he could make to fund his self-driving hobby. Or maybe he was just talking out of his ass as most people are who say "I could do that!". You'll notice he didn't knock himself for saying he'd have level 4 by 2022 and suddenly labels level 4 as "a scam". It was the same when he first demonstrated his software, it was so limited it was basically a fancy cruise control, three years later he still has a fancy cruise control. What's a scam is when companies like Tesla call something "self driving". That should simply not be allowed. He's right to focus on driver monitoring though - that's really where the canny valley problems of self-driving exist.

I took an 8000 mile trip in a car with adaptive cruise control last year. It is nice to have the ability to move your feet around. One thing I noticed is that when it buffers off the vehicle in front of you it will slow to match the pace but you won't notice unless you are being vigilant and alert. Suddenly you notice that you have slowed down 15 MPH below your target speed. I did test the system by exiting the freeway with the cruise set at 75. The car came to a complete stop buffering off the car in front of me. This is a bit unnerving and I had my foot poised and ready over the brake pedal. In all the blind spot assistance and proximity sensors are helpful except when it mistakes an overpass for a car and slams on the brakes. I'm sure they have made refinements in the past 5 years, but I still don't completely trust electronic control systems. I build wiring harnesses for hot rods and it doesn't take much to have the electricity take the path of least resistance and cause problems. Sensor failure can also cause problems. I prefer to drive myself.

The only way to self drive effectively is to physically attach cars to a physical rail that has traffic management capabilities or reliable sensor built into the roads. Then combine that with the current detection systems they are using. The best approach would be to first dump money into the roadways to retrofit them with the required tech to support the cars.

I have an idea for a self-driving car! We could put them on a set of steel rails, separate from normal roads, possibly elevated or underground, with some sort of attachment mechanism so you could string many of them together, and even build passages between cars! That way you can walk around while the vehicle is moving, and not be required to pay attention to the road/rail surface at all! we could build a series of pre-determined stops, and only run them on a strict schedule, so they don't run into each other! the only deviation from that pre-programmed schedule would be an emergency stop feature for when an unexpected obstacle appears in a vehicle's path. I know the infrastructure sounds expensive, but something tells me it could work!

The only way to eliminate the "human factors" is the eliminate the humans from the process. I do however think there will be a rapid change to society toward "driver-less" cars and it will come from a peculiar place. Once all the safety data is complied and "proves" driver-less" cars are "safer" of all the things what will get society to accept it, will be car insurance. The insurance companies, going by the "safety data" will jack up everyone's rate for none driver-less cars and so people will all change and then the real data will emerge, but by that time it's to late society will have changed and there will be no going back.
