Ronnie Lott is the prototype defensive player. The man hit everyone like a force of nature, and he made the toughest opponents feel fear on a primal level. That icey stare of his would make a raging bull climb a tree and start meowing for help...lol

I met Ronnie Lott in 1990 when I tried out with the 9er's. I wasn't anything but another rookie (tryout) but it meant the world to me that the best defensive back in the NFL said 2 sentences to me in the locker room. Lol my tryout didn't last long, but the memory of him encouraging me will last forever. This video brought tears to my eyes not only of a great football player playing the game he loved, but of what he meant to his family, and me. I will always remember my short time at camp and your encouragement. Thank you sir and congratulations on a great football life. 🙏🏾

Walter Payton played like a man possessed. There was no such thing as running out of bounds. If you wanted to bring him down you knew you were going to get hit, and maybe be left looking like a fool. Now I know why. Running up that steep hill he ran built power in his legs and you could see how he’d break tackles by driving with those powerful legs. That’s why Jim Brown respected him so much, because Walter played like him.

Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie He came to Chico California to place a charity basketball game. I just arrived lm in a wheelchair I was sitting under the basketball hoop. He came up to me and introduced himself. He was so kind to me. He signed my book that had all their pictures in it. His autograph is the only one of a famous person I have and still have. After the game my husband and I went out to dinner. I went to the restroom and when I came back. My husband and his friend teased me that Ronnie had bought me this rose. Anyways I just wanted to say he is such a nice man. 😊😊😊

I was volunteering during a charity event. Out of the corner of my eye, I turned my head and I knew. I always looked at him as the player on the field. A career ender. In reality out of all the legends I've met by far the kindest light-hearted soul of them all. I respect the man even more Thank you Ronnie for teaching me more than you would ever know. Respect!!!

    It wasn’t Lawrence Taylor.
    It wasn’t Troy Palomalu.
    It wasn’t Ed Reed.
These players could only be mitigated and avoided.
    It was Ronnie Lott.
That Dude brought the fear factor for 14 years in the NFL and I’m certain he has been the cause for more overtime pay for the sports medicine industry than any other player.
Your team could run but they couldn’t hide from Ronnie Lott.
I miss the NFL of that era even though Ronnie Lott made me cringe every time they called his name.

It's hard for me to choose between Ronnie Lott and Brian Dawkins, as far as who my favorite safety of all time is. It's a toss up, impossible to pick since I'm not personally a fan of either the eagles or 49ers. But man, these guys were special, from a bygone era. True headhunters that instilled TRUE fear in the minds of the opposition. If you tried to catch a ball over the middle of the field, you were gonna regret it. To me, Ronnie Lott was the original. Brian Dawkins carried the torch after. I mean the guy had an alter ego and he embraced it, and so did the fans. Weapon X. I mean you can't not love it. As a Giants fan, I still have the vision in my mind of B Dawk absolutely de-cleating and body slamming Brandon Jacobs to the ground during a run play. Brandon Jacobs was like 6'4 and over 250 lbs. A way bigger dude than Dawkins was. Didn't matter. Laid him out.

I happened to be looking at bits of the infamous 1987 49ers loss to the Vikings in the Divisional playoff round, and was shocked to see this happen on a 3rd down play: th-cam.com/video/T7zxeDQ1pWg/w-d-xo.html
Ronnie Lott went helmet-to-helmet and couldn't get up for TWO MINUTES while the doctors asked him who he was and where he was.
Then he PLAYED THE SECOND HALF. No wonder he's not all that coherent these days...
Even more chilling thought was the announcers saying that Lott told them he wanted to hit people the way his strong safety teammate, Jeff Fuller does. I always considered Fuller (drafted in 1984) to be Lott's protege and I was a big fan of him, but two years later Fuller broke his neck making a Lott-style helmet-to-helmet tackle, and never played again. Fuller can walk, but can't use one of his arms. Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo kept Fuller on the roster the following season (even though he could play ever again, it kept him on the payroll and accrued another year for his player pension benefits), then set up an annuity that pays him $100,000 a year for the rest of his life, because DeBartolo was the best owner any team ever had.

Ronnie played the game at the highest level . I loved how he came back to Eisenhower high school and came and spoke to us on how to play the game . This was our treat before our Friday night lights game ! What better motivation than that ! Lott is the best ever player and teammate!

Peace to Ronnie Lott and The Magic Man. Those Niners Teams and Lakers Teams were amazing.
Its common now however I think Lott was the first football player to wear Jordans on the field.

Family had USC tix from 1968 to 1984, so as an early teen I got to c Lott play live. When Lott was a Raider, he single- handedly won 3 games for them

Greatest defensive back of all time, there's no questioning. He had 7 picks and returned 3 for touchdowns as a corner, intercepted 10 passes and led the league his first full season at free safety, and had 8 picks leading the league as a strong safety. He excelled at all three positions in the defensive backfield.

Good football players know when to turn the switch on. As a father of 4 and one that played just collegiate football it's cool hearing his babies running the show. I salute this man that he could get on the field and turn the switch and still be the teddy bear, our babies need from a father, at home

I had two posters on my wall. Walter Payton and Ronnie Lott. What I admired most is that they left it all on the field. No shortcuts. No complaints. Pure love of the game.

This was the first defensive player I wanted to be like and I'm a raiders fan I can't stand the niners but Ronnie also played for the raiders and played for my other favorite USC Trojans. Him and Sean Taylor , polamalu, Reed and Dawkins are my top Safeties all time.

Lott attended a dinner a few years ago for former teammate Harry Sydney's non-profit "My Brother's Keeper" in Green Bay, WI. I was there and it was a great night for a good cause.
