When WRCA-TV became WNBC-TV in New York in 1960, it took the call sign from an NBC station in New Britain, Connecticut ;the station's name only pertained to the town's name and not the National Broadcasting Company.

When I was a child WRCA-TV starting running promos saying "a big change is coming to WRCA-TV". Even children's puppet WEBSTER WEBFOOT cut one of the promos. As a child I thought they would be going all kids shows! I was deflated when it turned out to be a call letter change to WNBC-TV.

It's now WNBC-TV. It signed on the air for the 1st time on July 1, 1941, as WNBT-TV. It kept those calls till 1954, when it became WRCA, and has been WNBC since 1960. Thanks so much for this.

WNBC Radio 66 changed from WEAF in 1946, became WRCA in 1954, and went back to WNBC in 1960 until signing off forever in 1988, turning the frequency over to WFAN. WRCA-FM/WNBC-FM became WNIS in 1975 as it carried the ill-fated News and Information Service. When NIS shut down in 1977, WNIS flipped to Adult Contemporary and became WYNY, which later went country before changing to WQHT. NBC's Los Angeles station at the time (TV only) was KRCA, originally KNBH and later taking the KNBC calls from the San Francisco radio station which started as KPO and changed to KNBR.

@@gregsells8549 Yes. I know this is getting a little off the subject, but WFAN was originally on 1050. It took over that spot from WHN on July 1, 1987. Up until that date, WHN had been one of the main country stations starting on February 26, 1973. Interestingly 1050 is now all-sports WEPN, but after it gave up the WFAN calls, it became WEVD and was something other (don't remember now) than sports.

The sign-off announcer here, Jerry Damon, died in 1979.

A Friday night sign-off, as WRCA began their (1958) Saturday schedule with "THE MODERN FARMER" at 7am.
