I think that generation of CR was the most beautiful Honda ever made. In '85 and '86, while still in and then just after high school, I used to go the dealer showroom and dream of buying and taking delivery of either a CR125R or CR250R. Also drooled over the YZ lineup at that time lol.
87 too ! Yeah I drooled over everything as kid until 18 , even an indian 80 with one shock missing and a stick in it's place lol .....I have an 86 Yz250 that I found with the org tires on it in FL .
@@5150mxVW Cool that sounds like a sweet find! I rode go karts and dirt bikes in my youth, and in recent years I bought an '89 KX80 and a '98 YZ250 which I rode for a while but sold due to a lack of place around here to ride. I guess with me you can take the kid off the dirt bike but you can never take the dirt bike bike out of the kid haha.
Have been riding motorcycles for around 50 years. The only bikes that scared me were dirt bikes. I rode a Honda 450 not sure of the model, but just trying to hit the power band scared the shit out of me. I respect the hell out of dirt riders, it’s wide open or nothing! I owned a Honda 450 enduro and that was fun to ride on and off the road. The only thing was if you had to hit the brakes real hard it tended to lay down. Was riding down a country paved road and all of a sudden a flatbed truck backed out of a field across both lanes. Had to hit the brakes or die, instantly went down and as I was skidding down the road the bike flipped around and instead of the bike heading for the truck, the bike was pushing me towards the truck. I was wearing a bright orange jacket, so it wasn’t that he couldn’t see me, luckily he pulled back into the place he came out of far enough that I skidded past him. But to get back to the dirt bike, never got on another one. Just wasn’t for me!
5150mxVW I rode it home, bought a new headlight and sold it to a crazy wild dirt biker. He rode it to work for years after that. He would race it across fields to beat us to the bar after work. Damn it! This reminds me of the 1986 CR250 I bought complete for $150 but needed a new crank and top end. I had over ten bikes at the time and just gave it to my buddy. Wish I still had it now to do a project. Kicking myself pretty hard.

air cooled cars but liquid cooled bikes... hummmm very strange. I get why the liquid cooling on the bikes though, my old air cooled Yamaha had a problem when I would flit around town on it and stop a lot, it would overheat in the summer time. Yes, it was an XT, street legal and yes I rode it year round in Colorado. Some fun that was. but when it's all you've got, it's all you've got.
I bought an XT350 in FL to ride to work in the break down lane or grass next to traffic in FL when the snow birds came down . A customer had one he rode to work every day , had over 50k miles on it and I talked him into the new DRZ400s ...he bought it and hated it lol
@@5150mxVW I loved my thumper until it quit running for no particular reason I could figure out. Oddly I traded it for work on my VW square back. It was mechanically fuel injected, and I couldn't figure it out. Put a new fuel pump on it, that didn't solve the problem. That thing required like 90 psi fuel pressure to work. after the bike was gone, it ran for like half a day. Later I was messing with it, giving it fuel through the air intake, and about burned it up. I got it out fairly quickly, but it screwed some wiring. I was considering putting a carb on it, but when it burned, I didn't want to screw with wiring... that's always a nightmare. Oddly, somebody came along and gave me the 150 I originally paid for the car. by the way, you're not older. when you're in your 70's then tell me you're older.
Love old 2 strokes. I had a kx250 think it was a 1992.. heavy and it ripped. Was one of my first restorations back when my son was born. Now that was a true outdoor garage... built it in the winter while living in Vermont. Good times! 🤦♂️

Is it rebuildable? Of course it is! But it's a money pit, you're way better off buying a runner for $1200. I've made the mistake myself, ended up with $2k into a bike that was worth $700.
Hi Dale , I am staring at the basic parts sheet now and remembering I had a 1986 running / riding CR125 I think I paid 350 bucks for a few years ago ( wasn't running when I bought it but was simple bike sitting kinda stuff ) . BUT..... in my opinion was the first real motocrosser.
Nice to see a father and son working on a project together
👍, I'm lucky he wants to be out there
A nice change Jason but I do like my motocross bikes too great video keep them coming👍😊
good to hear , thank you👍
Super Clean works great when you let it work in for a few minutes before you rinse 😃✌
it probably sat too long ( editing appears instant ) ...I was referring to the aluminum finish , but like i said , the bike as whole is pretty roached but my kick starter was still nice lol...I don't care for the polished look of aluminum , I prefer the oem natural finish
Haha I was impressed with the Barnacles
dropped a like simply for having the kid turn a wrench and learn
thank you Larry
Love that bike. I had a 85. 250 & that was the only bike I ever road that you still had more throttle then you could use. Best bike ever.
Nice👍
it is cool to see your son doing all the work and having fun, you cant start youg enough with tinkering on bikes and cars
thank you Bill , I'm fortunate he wants to be out there👍
I second both comments
👍👍👍😜🏴🦄🎣😁✌️
My son lasted five mins. Doesn't mind ring the bikes neck tho lol have fun guys
Most people would use this as a donor bike, can't wait to see the progress on it. And luv seeing you teaching your "minny me" how to wrench :)
yeah , it's pretty seized , everywhere ...always fun wrenching with Josh :) , thank you .
Good looking CR, I'm restoring a 82 YZ250 and race a 96 kx250
Nice👍, I have a 1986 YZ250 and raced it once , had a blast .
I had the same bike. I use to ride it down in the Meadowlands about a mile from Giant Stadium. We would ride the New Jersey Transit train tracks to the trails. That bike was a beast!!
Nice👍, we have a set of train track by my house as well ...take the tracks to the pits . Good times :)
Heck yea now were talkin I love the honda 125 2 strokes man the light weight ,the power band , rpms screaming. Alot of good times to be had looking forward to the build and seeing u double Josh around 😂🤣👏👏👏👍
👍, thank you Daniel
Good bike for a restore job. Just a iconic machine. Thanks for the great footage
thank you , it has been outside in FL for who knows how many years in range of a lawn sprinkler when i found it in 2005 . It was so seized it wouldn't roll ...looking back i might of removed the front brake system when I finally cut the chain off . Thank you for droppin' in TBC
@@5150mxVW awesome bud I just pick myself up a 1982 Honda Odyssey fl250 that was maybe even worse shape. You can check it out on my channel. I love all the old stuff
I will , I had 3 85's sitting in that garage 5 years ago . I always wanted to ride one and found 2 , then 1 . It was weird not being able to bail when things were about to go very bad haha !
@@5150mxVW I bet that's one of my worst fears about the thing I think I just need to get the first roll over of my chest then I will be good.
air cooled cars but liquid cooled bikes... hummmm very strange.
Good on you for doing it with your kid, he will remember this forever
Nice motorcycle. Honda 125. Happy new year
thank you , Happy New Year
You get a thumbs up just for having your kid wrenching creating the next generation of real riders
thank you , I appreciate it , I'm lucky he wants to be out there
Great video!! I recently found an MB5 that belonged to my father, and am currently restoring it. It's a lot of work!!!
thank you ...cool, rare bike , good luck
Awesome, can't wait! Thanks so much for your time.
thank you Ace , I appreciate it
Have a 49 tooth rear sprocket off of 94cr 250 it's red aluminum brand new. Should fit you can have it with a huge bag of bolts from the same bike
thank you , I'll have to check the stock gearing
Love old 2 strokes. I had a kx250 think it was a 1992.. heavy and it ripped. Was one of my first restorations back when my son was born. Now that was a true outdoor garage... built it in the winter while living in Vermont. Good times! 🤦♂️
great times , love the early 90's kawi's too , I have a 90 KX125 and 91 KX250 .
Glad u can do this with your son makes me happy to see
thank you , I'm lucky he is into it :)
OMG its not a VW!! LOL It will be fun to see this come back to life.
haha, yeah , I might need a little more moto in my life , been too long
That's what's up I love this if he wanted he have to work on it that's what's up teach him while he's young you doing exactly what you supposed to do keep up the good work thanks for sharing
Thank you HV , much appreciated👍
That was my dream bike when i was in jr. High. Cant wait to see that thing rippin again. Braaaap! And tonight is first night of Supercross.

Third laugh at 1:17 ?
Subbed up and getting into it for more!
thanks man , we can laugh about the bill so far together later :)
@@5150mxVW Nah come on.. i don't wanna spoil it for those who didn't get to Pt2 yet but two barn finds on a rare bike.. Not only do these things never happen, but once done you will have a rare bike on your hands and it will sell higher than you expect. She's a beauty already!
Man, your son has all the authentic grizzled mechanic behaviors down already! (I had to wait til I was a teenager for that to happen!) Great vid, great bike, and great to see your son learning to spin wrenches!
haha, thank you GL , great that he wants to be out there :)
Oh, man... Marty Smith just died last week. I remember all the Elsinores from the earliest up to this one, and also Marty's custom titanium-magnesium-unobtanium Honda factory rides that cost the company a quarter million each back in the seventies. I always wanted a CR125. Now I'm too old and too fat to ride it, even if I had one. Rest in peace, Marty Smith. You amazed us all.
Great to see that you involve your boy with this! Wish my dad would have done that with us.
👍...& you are not the only one my friend .
Both of your passions are exactly mine as well. 1960s VWs and dirtbikes ( 2 Strokes) have been my life since l was 10. I'm 39 now unfortunately. But keep on Rocking out brother!!!! As long as it's not seized up your all good. Maybe just a top end!!! Gta change that number plate tho...no triple 6s.
Nice👍! It's seized , it was seized and wouldn't roll when I found it in FL in 2005 . Yes , I will probably go org black background . 39 is young ! Thank you for droppin' in Matt , I appreciate it .
Cool. I'm a cr. Guy. Good stuff. I subbed to your channel
CR's are very sweet , thank you for the sub
Good luck with your new project, Jason. That little 125 reminds me of an afternoon I spent riding motocross on a similar Honda. I don't think I was able to move the next day. Great to see master mechanic Josh in action again! It's wonderful to see you guys working on stuff together.
thank you ...yes , Mx will find muscles you never knew u had when your body has never experienced it . ... ( or a long lay off :) . Josh was asking tonight about the project :)
He reminds me of my son... Nice father and son project 👍
:) , thank you👍
Having your kid spinning bolts is fantastic. Love it. Look forward to the next video.
thank you , I'm lucky to have him want to be out there ...beautiful LP👍
Lol. Thank you sir. But seriously. One of the best things we can teach our kids is to be able to fix anything. Great job. Love it.
Awesome to see your son helping out.
👍, :) awesome to have him , thank you RK
It's so satisfying watching you spray down the bike!! Very relaxing.....
Bars look original too👍
👍, sad it sat outside so long
Cant wait for next bike video
👍, thank you QV
Here for the bike restoration. You have my attention!
👍, thank you
I had an 83 and it was sun faded orange and blue just like that one.
I raced an 85 CR 125...blew it up 4 times that year. I loved that bike except for the rear brake... That bike is rusty as hell. I wouldn't even pull it apart.
yeah , the 87 CR125 was the one to have wasn't it ? We will see if it comes apart lol.
@@5150mxVW oh yeah...the 87' CRs dominated with a rear disc brake!! I left a comment before you emptied a can of PB on the bike. Those Pro Link bolts were notoriously frozen on bikes. Hope you get it running! I'm afraid to see how corroded inside the cases are.
Well you know getting some axles and pivot bolts out of garaged bikes that never saw grease is a chore ...I can't wait to see what tomorrow's tear down attempt brings . yes , it could be very , very ugly inside .
@@5150mxVW I have a feeling your VW experience is going to be put to the test! Heat and PB will be your friend. Maybe you'll get lucky, and the previous owner liked to keep grease on the axles and engine pivot bolt!! I hope so!
You need to soak it into diesel to penetrate 200 indiaman metal so it is so good clean
thank you for the top Gareth
Yup VW's and Hondas my fav two rides, can't wait until you get it running.
👍
Just so you know To make the plastic look new spray them with wood pledge cleaner and let them sit in the Sun and then wipe off after about 2 hrs.....
I have not heard of that one , thank you for the tip , I appreciate it CC RC
Reminds me of my first dirtbike. 89 honda cr125r
nice , mine was a 1989 too , a Cagiva WMX250
Not a vw guy but am a dirtbike guy looking forward to part 2 👌🏻
thank you Kirk I appreciate it . Hoping for part 2 on 1/18 , some parts came in today & picking more up tomorrow .
good project and it cleaned up ok great to have a good helper thumbs up shared good start
👍, thank you Drew
Nice bikes had 1983 CR 250 had the kick start on the left side screamer it would burn Berings out the rear wheel power was crazy good times keep up the good work
sounds like some great times Trever👍, 80's mx :). Thank you
Very cool wow has Josh grown in the last few months that I've missed! Great helper and a comedian lol
haha, thank you Mike :)
I like honda motor cycles you do the best work on the channel &you take your time to explain things big super fan of your channel thanks
Awesome video that's great that you got your kid involved especially at that age they're usually playing with video games phones you name it can't wait to see you two get it running
thank you Steve
I remember when I was a kid and those were new. They were so big and mean looking. I thought my buddy’s cr80 was amazing. Much less the 125.
We used to look at the guys who rode the 500s like they were from another planet cause they were so bad ass.
Good luck. Hope it runs again one day.
Thank you George , great times I'm sure and an awesome era ...ahhh , the 500's ....blessed to have been able to see the 500 nationals at Unadilla and Broom Tioga ....standing down in the 1st turn , staring at a full gate of 500's ready to launch👊👍.
Happy new year to the complete 3J family!
Maaan, nearly nothin' better in this world than watchin' father and son wrenchin' and havin' fun together! I think someone near me was cutting onions while I watched this because it brought tears* to my eyes.
Something special in the DNA of VW collectors/fans must be very good for children development (and not only because marcijunebug is raisin' another even smaller petrolhead too). :-) ;-)
Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health.
Postscriptum: * of joy and good emotions of course!
:)))))))))) , thank you CC , Happy New Year !
Dear@@5150mxVW
Thanks for replying.
Also thanks for that Smiley. I think it is the most smiling Smiley I ever received.
A little heat gun on the plastics to get rid of oxidation and then some mop and glo! Best trick I ever learned for Mx plastics...
Great find, brings back some good times when working with my boy's first bike ! Great project as always great to see !
Nice , good times , thank you John👍
Badd ass Bike . Thanks for the video
josh seems good with his hands holds the tools the right way.

man you need a heated 5000 psi pressure washer lol. that bikes gonna turn out great!
haha, and a 6 month dip in PB Blaster , thank you Stephen
@@5150mxVW no prob man Excited to see how it turns out
That's a pretty fun project. My dad and i recently gave my brothers bike a new paintjob. Seeing you working on a bike is just as fun as VW's
Nice👍, thank you Lennert
Love to see the father-son bond..... lovely
:) ,thank you
Cool man. CLR works good as a spray on mold rust and mildew remover. Right on I love motorcycle motocross type situations.
Thank you for the tip Mark , I have to pick some CLR up and try it .
You should of used oven cleaner on the plastics and shit it works frigging good dude try it sometime.e
hmmm, never heard of that one , I will try that on some old misc plastics I have . Thank you for the tip Troy
That's an awesome bike. Love the old Hondas, got a few old XRs myself
thank you , I love the XR's too , I had quite a few in the collection before they got sold for Vw's.
Something about old bikes I never thought I would be interested? They have character I suppose. Nice video👌🇳🇿
She's a wee bit crusty! But she's a beauty under all that rust. Thankfully you brought in the best " mini- mechanic" in CT. Happy New Year to you and the Family.
haha, very rusty , when the spoke nipples are rusted off ...that is rusty :). Thank you Ed, Happy New Year , hope you guys had a nice Christmas .
We need to see more of this bike!
Hey 5150mxVW 😎
Happy New Year 🎊 to you and your family and friends. Nice switch from VW’s . That’s how I learned to turn a wrench 🔧 and smashing knuckles. Oh the good days LOL. Thanks for the video. Great start for the New Year. Looking forward for the next video. C-ya 🤙
Thank you Richard , much appreciated , I need some MX :)..Happy New Year
Happy New Year!! Great to see you Josh, terrific job!! I just looked at Kijiji (in NB Canada) and there's a '98 CR 125 (never raced????) for $2200, hmm, maybe not a bad deal....but, my wife would kill me if the bike didn't!!
Happy New Year , thank you Daniel ....1st year of the new frame on the CR125...
Is it rebuildable? Of course it is! But it's a money pit, you're way better off buying a runner for $1200. I've made the mistake myself, ended up with $2k into a bike that was worth $700.
Hi Dale , I am staring at the basic parts sheet now and remembering
I had a 1986 running / riding CR125 I think I paid 350 bucks for a few years ago ( wasn't running when I bought it but was simple bike sitting kinda stuff ) . I sold a lot of my Mx bikes 5 years ago when
i started chasing cars. It is definitely a $ pit and after tear down ( if it even comes apart lol ) we will know more :). The damn clutch cover is the killer on these , 500 bucks !
