    sand the cover with some haavy grit sand paper and remake the area with j an be weld. Done it on many vw cases for water erosion and it works great and pretty permanent. totally savable. just make it clean anr rough before you apply it. after the j and b weld drys you shape it like bondo by sanding it.

    That water pump cavity CAN be repaired. Clean the cavity out perfectly....whatever method works for you, but it has to be PERFECT. Then shoot it down with a quality brake cleaner. Then you JB Weld it with the 24 hour set formula. You will have to sit with it and keep tapping the JB Weld in order to maintain the shape that you want because it will tend to be liquid for 2-3 hours. Oh yeah....wet your finger with water when you tap on it to maintain the shape you want. You'll be amazed how good and durable the repair will be. I hate doing these kind of repairs (because it's always the last option) but it works fantastically well and worth the time. I found watching a movie that's 3 hours long and just hold the part and keep an eye on it until it firms up makes the whole job not so bad really. The results are absolutely worth it.

  • @scottpella7419
    @scottpella7419 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Amazing how nice the transmission is...that'll save you some $$. No doubt, the crank seal on the flywheel side was sucking air/ leaking water when washed and ridden through water. That's too bad. But you've got a head start on good parts between the 2 engines!

    😁👍👍👍 Interesting stuff Jason looking good.That rot spot JB weld it. No joke I used JB weld on a old ford fiesta cam bearing (area) with a gouge in it (aluminum) that was losing oil pressure JB welded it sanded it smooth and that went cross country baby. Needless to say that was a quick econo fix instead of buying a head and installing it. The owner was tickled to death.

  • @MikeSmith-rx4uu
    @MikeSmith-rx4uu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can totally use that cover from the looks of it. It's not damaged on the gasket surface. Clean the flakes out and get down to good solid material. It's fine. You can use some JB weld to smooth out the surface if you want. More importantly, Change that water pump shaft bearing and shaft seal! 90% of the time they are bad and if not replaced you will end up with a milkshake in the transmission. That's probably why you have no drain plug in the one motor and white powder (dried out coolant and trans oil mix) coming out of the other motor.

    I've repaired several engines in conditions like this, and just as others have mentioned, JB Weld does an excellent job at filling in craters like this. Clean and prep the area good, wire wheel it down and apply the JB Weld. Then after it's dried, use a dremel to shape it. If you feel a little more daring, you can try to aluminum braze it. It's aluminum brazing rod that's applied with a propane torch with MAPP gas. I'm sure you can find it at any home supply store or welding supply. Jost follow the instructions carefully and maybe watch a couple videos on how its done. Also, maybe practice on some scrap aluminum in the same condition. You can do it though, it's easy. Then you'll have to clean it up with a dremel or die grinder. If you mess up on it, don't sweat it, you were thinking of replacing it anyway, so this would be good practice. Good luck.

I don't think that there are any aftermarket side covers for the '87 CR125. So even if you wanted to spent the $500 I'm not aware of anyone making them. Other models, yes, but not this one.

    Ebay has all parts to restore your bike. I had the 85 250R, and two sore points on it was the alternator was toast and clutch cover, they were made of magnesium. Riders back in the 80s didnt use distilled water mixed with coolant even though the cycle mags warned the to do it. I got my beast to run and it did wheelies and screamed like a banshee. The pj carb was the easiest to work on back then, its on my 89 250R and it runs like a top. Good bike, if you restore it correctly, they can run up to $4000 grand on the market, the market for mid life crisis folks who love vintage dirt bikes. Ufo has your plastics, Pit Replica has your correct seat cover, Ebay has all of the hardware. Good luck!

    You should try buffing the coroded metal with a dremel and some polish an a small buffing tool, could also try brass tools, that's what we use to work on chrome dies at work, dunno how soft the case is, aluminium right?
    Could also try attack it chemically with acid, but you'd wanna get something that wouldn't mess that rubber in the middle up, (or take it out) or effect the base metal, dunno if that's possible.

The engine is tumbling around and you're chasing after it. I think you'd find it helpful, especially when using that expensive motion pro case splitter or the dremel.
