  • At first glance, you would be forgiven for mistaking these two popular dog breeds; however, they are very different in several ways. So Collie vs. Sheltie, where are they similar, and what separates them?
    Physical Characteristics
Shelties can weigh between 16-20 pounds and stand between 13 and 16 inches tall. Male and female Shelties are the same in this regard.
Depending on the gender, Collie males and females can range from 22 to 24 inches. A male's weight ranges from 44 to 75 pounds, whereas a female's weight ranges from 35 to 64 pounds. The biggest of the two dogs is unquestionably this Collie.
In terms of appearance, their coats are similar in that they are thick but delicate and velvety. That being said, the Sheltie might have the more luxurious coat of the two.
Both of them have double-layered coats, and this weather-resistant coat also protects their bodies from the elements, keeping them comfortable and dry.
Collies are known for their long coats, shorter hair, except for their heads and legs. They are known as "Rough Collie" because of their rough exterior coat.
The collie sheds a lot; therefore, it needs to be groomed frequently. Shelties will also shed; however, the Rough Collie is the worst. Owning either one of these dogs means you'll need to spend a lot of time brushing and vacuuming loose dog hair.
    Personalities
Both dogs have a reputation for being amiable, energetic, and good with small children, and these facts tend to be indisputable in the dog world.
Collies tend to be a little warier of strangers than the Sheltie, while the Sheltie has a confident demeanor while meeting new people.
Separation anxiety is widespread in Shelties due to their overall aversion to being left alone for long periods. Since they can't be left alone all day, it can be challenging; they need a family that spends more time at home than work. The Collie, despite its sociable disposition, is a bit more self-sufficient.
These two dog breeds are devoted to their families and crave attention. They have a strong desire to please and are highly intelligent. These characteristics make training both dogs a breeze.
It will exacerbate the natural stubbornness of collies if you do not adequately train and socialize from an early age. Collies are not difficult to teach, but it takes a consistent and patient owner. If this is not you, it may be best to seek the advice of a professional trainer.
Shelties might be the more difficult to train of these two dogs. However, early socializing and obedience training is mandatory if you want a well-mannered Sheltie. The dog can become exceptionally bossy if owners allow them to take control.
    Collie Vs. Sheltie Lifespan
Both dog breeds have a similar lifespan of between 12 to 14 years.
    Collie Vs. Sheltie Health Problems
All dog breeds have common ailments, and these two breeds are no exception.
    Sheltie Health Issues
Weight gain: is prevalent in Shelties. Owners should attempt to maintain a quality diet and not overfeed the Sheltie. Obesity brings several problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and bone and joint issues.
Hip Dysplasia: so many dog breeds suffer from hip dysplasia that it comes as no surprise that it can happen to Shelties. The disease seems to manifest once the dog reaches around five years old.
Von Willebrand’s disease: this is a bleeding illness, and once again, many dog breeds are susceptible, including the Sheltie.
    Collie Health Issues
Cataracts: this eye disease can be hereditary; ensure you ask the breeder to produce health clearances for the parent dogs before buying a puppy.
Autoimmune diseases: Allergies and other immune system illnesses can strike Collies at any age. Skin inflammation is common and can range from mild to severe. If left untreated, this can be pretty uncomfortable for your dog.
Collie eye anomaly (CEA): an inherited eye disease affecting the retina, choroid, and sclera. The condition can manifest in a mild form or can cause blindness. Collie puppies can inherit the disease if both parents carry the PRA gene. Unfortunately, there is no cure.
    Summary
Family-friendly and affectionate, both the Collie and Sheltie are ideal companion dogs. Shelties are the best bet if you lack living space or prefer a small dog. The Collie does cost more money, but they're also tremendously good-tempered and gentle dogs.

Shelties are also exceptionally smart, sometimes too smart for their own good. They pick up on things very fast and are eager to please. Shelties bark. It's part of their nature. We call them our Bio Doorbells because they will bark to let you know someone's at the door. They bark at the fence, when our neighbors are mowing, the fur-kids are out running the fence and telling him how to do the job. The barking can be annoying at times, but it's what they do.
Shelties really need a pack, lone Shelties need someone to play with so having more than one is a good idea. Shelties shed, like barking it's a big deal. They need a lot of brushing to keep those coats clean and not shedding everywhere. They can make good assistance dogs if trained to do the job. Mine alerts my husband when I'm attempting to stand, I have MS and am a fall risk. We're also working on training our younger Sheltie to pick things up that I drop. We're a sheltie family, the younger is our third and we'll be getting another one after our 14-year-old beloved girl passes away.

My first Sheltie displayed the features of a Rough Collie. She stood 19 inches tall and weighed close to 50 pounds. She was a great companion.

You probably had a rough collie then. If its outside of normal weight by that much its either a mix or just a collie or you had an obese dog. If I told my vet my Shetland Sheepdog was 50 pounds she would probably take my dog away for neglect. That's double the body weight it should ever reach.

@@irockgame1 mmm....both parents CKC registered shelties. An obese dog you say? Then I would not had been able to feel her rib cage. And did I not say she stood at 19 inches tall. So, self proclaimed expert, perhaps you should keep an open mind to the fact the shelties have a mixture of genes...and perhaps my healthy sheltie gene makeup leaned more to the one of the rough collie.

@@irockgame1 Well, well, well Lauren! What does the letter C represent in CKC??? Do you need a hint? Ok, here is one, I am from that country that is directly north of you. Can you guess it now??? C-A-N-A-D-A. And do you know what, Canada has its own kennel club which goes by, if you have not guessed by now, the CKC, Canadian Kennel Club. Perhaps one day, your country's future Fascist Republican government will carry out a military operation north of the 49th parallel and the CKC will be renamed the
