    Hi Steven!! Thank you for the video. I watched this about a year ago. Then went and bought a new 50 gallon water heater to install myself...well...because that is the kind of guy I am. The new water heater sat beside the old one still in the box until 2 weeks ago. I was a little leery on my ability to solder copper pipes together and kept dragging my heels. So a month or so ago I went and bought some pieces of copper and some fittings and practiced...and practiced. The old water heater now sits beside the new one that is up and running and my joints look better than the ones done when the house was built in 2003!! Your video helped me a lot!! Total time for me was 2.5 hours and that includes going and getting three fittings from the store. (but I ain't bragging and sure as the hell will not do one for any family!!) Have a good one!!

    Steven, I am about to change my heater. 13 yrs old GE model. No problems til recent started leaking. Your video will help me greatly. After all these years, you are still helping us. Thanks.

    DIY was a success for me. Only pain in the ass was cleaning the water mess the old tank left and squeezing on those new copper fittings. Thank you for your videos Steve. I've learned quite a bit from them.

    Cant tell you how many times I have called in the "Pros" to do the work and found later it wasn't even close to being done correctly or competently. I'm sick of it and will always do my own work when its at all possible. No pro will ever have the attention to detail and care in my home that I do. I realize there are Pros out there who are good at what they do, but unfortunately they are overshadowed by the legions of knuckleheads out there.

      sounds like you're not calling the pros .the truth is your calling the cheapest guys in the phone book,and that's the price you paid for shoddy work. they probably didn't have insurance more than six months after they ran Thier add .u people are all the same all ways crying the price is to much,in the price is to much usually it means the contractors on point and has jumped through every hoop the govt has required of him ,but he's not the guy u hire .no the guy you hire shows up with a crew of illigal workers and he's fucking them too

      You are making assumptions not mentioned in the post. Hiring a pro and paying top dollar provides no assurance that you will get a good job. When hiring anyone to do work you must check the contractors history, get references and withhold part of the payment pending your satisfaction.

      So far most of the plumber videos I watch, lack something. They do good technical work but fail to show the safety aspect. Take for example this video. The last thing I would have shown, is how to test the vent and make sure it's venting properly before I walk away from it.

    Water heaters aint nothing. I have been replacing my own watet heatet since my uncle showed me how to do minor plumbing around the house to save lots of money. I decided to get a quote from a big chain plumbing company. They wanted $1800 to install a new 40 gal. nat. gas water heater and bring it up to "code". I said no thank you. I didnt know how to change out the thermocouple (now i do thanks to youtube) so thats why I wanted a quote. I went back to installing it myself. The water heater only cost me $320 plus parts (teflon tape, pipe dope, new flexible copper lines). That means that for the $1800 I could probably have bought 4 water heaters, installed 1 and put the other 3 in storage. I would be covered for the next 40 years! I assume 10 yrs of service from each heater maybe more. Do you see the ridiculousness in the price?!! Its a money making scam, highway robbery just like HVAC. I recently had a capacitor replacex on my ac condenser unit and a hard start kit added for $675. Thanks to youtube next time I know I can do it myself and the part is $15 to $25. He showed me the book that had the prices for the capacitors mine was $320. He said since it was still under warranty I woukd only pay half. Unbelievable! If I ever decided to go into plumbing and start a business my motto would be "The Christian Plumber" that way they know I wont take advantage of them. For a capacitor replacement I would say $150. $50 for the parts and $100 for labor. Word of mouth gets out and thats all it takes. My goal in life is not to get rich just to get by and be well off. In my case I could have done the work myself and saved probably $500! Unbelievable.

    Steve is right about gas lines and proper ventilation. A licensed professional needed in these areas. The problem comes in when you call a large company and they send out an apprentice without much experience . He’s on the phone half the time with his boss walking him through the repair or replacement. Not good. She will be a leaker. ☔️🏊🏼‍♂️🛁

    Why do you put in vacuum breakers on water heaters,over here in Ky. we don't put them in,but we do install expansion tanks on a closed system?Great job Steve.

    • @stevenlavimoniere
      @stevenlavimoniere  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      its code to install a vac breaker in my state if there is ever a fire in area,fire trucks could collaps tank if drawing a lot of water from water main ..the vac breaker will prevent that ..you have a double check valve in your area to prevent that

    Every time I called in a "licensed pro" from a "reputable firm" they did crappy substandard work. Instead of correcting their lousy work, they explained why it was impossible to sue them. I will never have one of those greedy incompetent bastards touch anything in my home again. I was so upset with with their rotten scams that I took the repair courses and learned how to do it myself. I quickly found out that in order to get licensed there was a requirement to work for one of these firms at slave wages for several years before being allowed to take the test. These companies have donated millions of dollars to the state legislative bodies to have these shit laws passed. The laws were lobbied in by criminal scam attists in order to sanction their ripoff substandard work..

    Come on now, if your mechanically inclined the average DIY homeowner can easily replace a defective hotwater heater. I replaced several water heaters over the past 30 years (my own and family members) for maybe 20 bucks in parts plus the cost of the water heater. It is a lot better than paying $1600 to a plumber for a 2 hour job.

    call the Pro.............
    I like the insulation on the cold water side that way you can make sure the water's cold as ice going into the water heater.
    Its not so much call a Pro, its pull a permit!
    Yes reuse old copper..... Not in my house I'll replace to the last elbow or add some dam ball valves the original plumbers did not do.
    But soldering 1" away from a brass valve can't be good on the rubber washer in it.
    Perhaps you should have drained the water out the pipes and installed a ball valve.
    What was the thing on the top of the inlet tank at the brass T connection?
    Call a Pro: do you have to call a pro to install a Gas stove? A gas dryer? A gas BBQ?
    A gas fireplace? A Gas heater? Gas in the bathroom? My 34 year old son's a Pro at that and you don't need to use soap to look for leaks, you can smell it!

    What he did attach the pipes to the heater before sweating the joints is EXACTLY WHAT THE WARNING ON TOP OF THE WATER HEATER SAYS NOT TO DO SINCE THE NIPPLES ON THE WATER HEATER CONTAIN A NONMETALLIC DIP TUBE AND NONMETALLIC NIPPLE LINERS!!!

    You shoulda put some dielectric unions

  • @bossmantrucker656
    @bossmantrucker656 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don’t you use die electric unions to separate the 2 metals in n the water line connections so the stronger metal doesn’t eat the weaker metal? Thanks 🙏 Peace ✌️

    "Only if it's new I'll do that." Because if it isn't new, it will have to be after you open it.

      Yeah but its way to big, get the right size quick release tip acetylene tank like a real professional would have.

    Maybe change the valve anyway….always change the valve! Obviously things have changed since this video. Use flex lines for water in/out. And a flex gas line as well. Also if your not comfortable soldering they have shark bites which are fine. Seemed very amateurish to me yet stressing do not do this unless you are a professional! Ok video but missed draining and minor electrical. Those heaters in this video most likely need replacing now!

    call the pros my ass don't teach me how to do something then tell me to call some one to come and do it for me after teaching me how to save some money 1 of the boilers in my house broke the PROS told me $1200.00 to replace it I can do it my self and only spend $500.00 and save $700.00 that sound like a good deal to me.

      Etienne philima He didn't. He first told us to call a pro, then showed us how to do it LOL. I agree. If we should only have a licensed pro do it, then there shouldn't be a video cuz a pro should already know how to do it. The answer: he's trying to avoid a lawsuit.

    Why would you use old copper on a new water heater why not replace with new female adapters and tie into the old existing cold water line and hot water line. Don't favor using old copper fittings from a old unit that you're replacing it with a new one.

    I hate when guys use couplers to redo hot water tanks, like come on man, and using a big ass torch for 1/2" copper, I wouldn't call you a professional at all.
