  • HOHNER Marine Band
When Jacob HOHNER registered his new harmonica design at the US Patent Office on January 30th, 1896, he did not understand the impact it was to have on popular music. Conceived as a simple instrument for folk songs, the Marine Band has played a vital role in the development of the blues, folk, rock and pop music.
With its inexpensive price and range of playing capability, the Marine Band harmonica rapidly became the people's instrument, played in every conceivable location from the back porch to the concert stages of the world, featured in countless hits and film soundtracks, immortalized in literature. This amazing little instrument has shaped modern music and culture.

These guys have devoted their life to that little tin sandwich. Great talent and skill. Nothing but respect from me. I've been playing for 35 years and still look up to these guys.

You Don't ever want to get stuck in an elevator with these three squares. No wonder harmonica is placed with Banjo its because most wouldn't know hipness and character if it hit them in the face.

"John Phillip Sousa was having success with the...Army Marine Band."
Boy, that's some music history there!
Never heard of a Marine Band being in the Army.

The revolutionary discovery came when some early bluesman found the accidental but serendipitous way a C harp could work when others were playing in G, using the other discovery, that low note bending would fill in the missing notes in the proper key. Before, first position (same key harp and song) made for the distinctive higher "hillbilly" jugband country cowboy sound. Deford Bailey and Sonny Terry sort of bridged the gap, using elements of both keys in one tune. Add crazy crude, powerful amp distortion and reverb, a la Walter, with novel jazz-influenced melodic tangents that swoop and dive around and through the basic blues changes just enough to stay in contact with the song, and modern blues was born. In many ways, despite the technical prowess of the Levys and more using overblow virtuosity to fill every possible run and complex composition, something seems to have been diminishing in the past 10 or 20 years, as flashy mastery has overrun musicality? Something to ponder.

This was an amazing explanation of how playing cross harp was accidentally discovered. Really clearly explained in very simple terms that I could understand. You have communicated the brilliance of the discovery in a brilliant fashion. Thanks you.

I play Hohner Marine Bands, and it is an informative video, but the three of them, don't seem to be very happy, being there together... And to me, Joe Filisko's gimmick, of constantly flipping his harmonica, got very tiresome, very quick.
