  • In the first part "The Original Blues Harmonica" Steve, David and Joe are talking about the creation of the Marine Band. In doing so, they are discussing that due to a differentiated way of playing the Marine Band the Blues developed. This was by far not planned, because the Marine Band was supposed to be an instrument for traditional European folk music.
In the second part the three artists illuminate how the marine band has developed during the past eleven decades to an state of the art instrument - the epitome of the diatonic harmonica.

Love this series. My very first harmonica (42 years ago) was a Marine Band! Love that Hohner has been developing improvements.
Just one suggestion: How about putting a durable, easy to read key symbol on the end of the comb?

I think the MB is the single greatest musical instrument ever created. Period.

No idea why Hohner doesn’t ask Susuki how they produce their cover plates. I think the various Hohner plates are solid, and very aesthetically pleasing, but there’s no reason they can’t get rid of the metal crimp sharp edges, when Susuki solved this problem with the Manji. I think Hohner sets up their harps for novice players, knowing that a serious player is going to open it up and modify it. I just wish they would meet us halfway in the middle with some simple quality of life upgrades.

great first class line designed by the ones that know how !
I use Custom tuned by Joe Spires on the recommendation of David Barrett and I love them the sound is outstanding ...I get asked all the time how do you get that sound out of the harmonica "I say with a little help from my friends" ;.)
    Thank you all very much.

I just can't see paying a king's ransom for a good quality harmonica. That's why I prefer the Special 20s of the Hohner line; plus, I just prefer plastic-combed harps anyway - but that's just me.

How do you order the screws or little brads for the Marine Band harmonica?

Joe Filisko looks like Charlie McCoy.

I prefer the standard Marine Band because the rounded combs on the Deluxe and Crossover are too smooth and blunt.
