    Couple things.
    1. Alfred's hand was reattached, and that was directly referenced in the comic.
    2. Joker found the Dyanisium when he fell down that cavernous hole at the end of Death of the Family. That's why he survived that fall, that's why he has a new face. It healed him.

    Please do Batman Eternal. It's not just a story where Hush gathers all the Batman villains together on an assault. In fact it goes much deeper than that and really asks fundamental and truly enjoyable questions about the nature of Batman as well as his philosophy. Overall, I consider it one of the best Batman stories ever written and would love it if you did it on your channel.

      Still not exactly what you'd expect from, "the worlds greatest detective," (actually pretty stupid in fact,) but the whole 3 Jokers thing is really just Morrison being over-clever rather again rather than just telling us a damn good story the way he used to, (7 soldiers was much the same,) and once again the rework and particularly tying it all in with Ra Al Ghoul and Vandal Savage, etc seem both contrived and more than a little bit silly to me.
      It didn't even come close to; The killing joke, not at all, not on any level and a couple of lame plot twists don't really make a great story and I somehow get a sense that Morrison has no real love left for or respect for these characters left these days and that writing has become, "just another job," to him.
      Which is a shame, he's done some brilliant stuff, although the Invisibles turning out be just a dream in the end, (seemingly simply because he had, "issues," with his old English teacher,) was about as lame a cop out as I've ever come across and completely spoiled one of the best, most original and inventive comics that I ever read and his Doom Patrol was even better, but all those are past glories now.

  • @fafaaf61
    @fafaaf61 7 ปีที่แล้ว +137

    I disagree with your observation of the Joker being a "buffoon" or a "goof". That was the Silver Age Joker characterization and indeed, he is still extremely silly but to me, the Joker has always been the greatest Batman villain. Even though villains like Bane, Ra's Ah Ghul, Two-Face, Penguin, Black Mask, etc. are capable of much more impressive feats, the Joker was always an extremely philosophical character and has always to me represented a dark reflection of Batman. Indeed, they are very similar. They are both normal humans who use nothing but their intelligence, instinct, determination and wit to rise above normal humans and ascend to the level of gods. They both suffered "one bad day" which led to them taking the roles they have now. However, from that one day, they drew opposite conclusions. Joker came to the conclusion that life is meaningless and random, there is no order but only chaos in the world. He became a reflection of that dark world. That's why in his eyes, he's the only sane one. The "normal" person is insane because they try to find meaning inside a meaningless world thus doing action that make no sense such as living and enjoying life while the Joker is "sane" because his actions are absurd in such and absurd world. It's why the clown motif works so well and why ridiculous schemes like Joker-fish fit so well. He makes no sense because the world makes no sense. Batman is just the opposite. He also realized from the day that his parents died that the world was chaotic. However, instead of accepting the chaos of the world like the Joker he choose the fight the chaos and try to find some underlying meaning throughout all the absurdity, and if he's unable to do that, then he'll create his own meaning and his own future. In essence, they represent the philosophies of Nihilism and Existentialism. Both philosophies accept that there is no inherit meaning to the universe but Nihilism takes this to mean that we should do do nothing and accept the futility of life while Existentialism posits that we must instead create our own meaning. The Joker is simply Batman if he accepted the absurdity of the world. Batman is simply the Joker if he chose to fight the Chaos instead of giving in. It is this absolute devotion to their philosophies, that allows them to exceed human bounds and become a villain that is so terrifying that even other, more powerful villains fear him and a hero that has saved the entire planet multiple time respectively. It is also their philosophies that draw them to each other in their eternal battle, each trying to prove the other wrong and never succeeding. Their "game" of crimes and imprisonment is both interesting and never ending because in reality, neither philosophy is correct, but neither is wrong either. The two forces are symbols for aspects that humanity encounter everyday. The Joker is a symbol for that dark par of humanity claiming that everything you do is meaningless, that you shouldn't adhere to the order that is forced by society but instead go with the natural randomness of thing. Batman is the part of humanity that fights, fights for order, for meaning, and for the future. The part that represents humanities acceptance for the harsh and uncaring world but nonetheless is willing to surpass that world and become something greater. As long as humanity retains these aspects, the battle of Batman v. Joker can never truly end, at least not with only one remaining. Neither can live while the other survives. There's more that I can go into such as the Joker's obvious intelligence despite him seemingly being insane and his possibly Marxist themes but overall, that is the beauty of the character of the Joker and his battle with Batman.

    • @SuperShanko
      @SuperShanko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The short version for myself is like you mentioned with the silver age (wasn't that the one messing with Scooby?) since my modern time seeing him from Batman: Tas and on he's always intelligent to some degree whether it's just making his Joker gas to here. If anything I thought he was sometimes _too capable_ in his means extending over into toppling the whole JL compared to beating the whole Bat family with relative ease..... seriously, someone explain to me how he took out Jason "I literally use a gun and kill people" Todd?

      fafaaf61 I agree, the joker is no goof. To say he is underestimates him, it's one of the things that make him so dangerous. People assume the joker will keep doing these schemes that will only push Gotham to the edge, so they keep playing along. That's why he can do things that people don't come back from, because they let him, because they're gullible.

    • @MartinYLang
      @MartinYLang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well said. I can see some reflections similar to Jordan Peterson's explanations, especially about Nietzsches Ubermensch project to find your own meaning after death of God to combat inevitable rise of Nihilism and Marxism and Postmodernism being embodiments of that exact Nihilism.
      Some of Joker schemes are almost nihilistic in that way, like most of the times he creates total equality and destroys all classes of society be making everyone equally crazy. Truly, a postmodern marxist dream.
      While Batmans eternal struggles to fix the world and stop the entropy and chaos are the core existential stories of individuals fighting a lose battle against infinite odds in a world made out mainly of suffering. You may be a small spec against infinite, never ending or stopping sources of obstacles (The Reality), but still, you are an individual who need to concentrate all of his efforts on fighting those and be strong, a cornerstone of your family, local society or even world.

      Actually Superman V Batman has got pretty lame; the Dark Knight Returns was certainly a masterpiece, (as good as it gets,) but even then their, "fight," was pretty contrived they just mucked about for a while and then, (Ta Da,) Batman whipped out the Kryptonite and that was that and if Miller's Superman hadn't been such a complete dick; complacent, patronizing and condescending then Bruce wouldn't have stood a chance.
      Look what he did to Ollie.

    Actually, Batman still had his Justice League contingency plans in the New 52, we saw them during Forever Evil.
    The one he had against Green Lantern was a Sinestro Ring, and him trying to use it against Power Ring from Earth-3 is what brought Sinestro into the fray.
    Also, Alfred's hand was sewn back on in the last issue of Batman before Rebirth, using a special healing thread that Crazy Quilt had devised. A joke was made that it wasn't actually Alfred's hand, and it was restored. And we might be seeing Julia in All-Star Batman, since the current arc is very Alfred centric.

    I've pretty much acepted that the whole Snyder run (Including the DC mandated crossovers in other books) is in its own continuity. It's always been pretty removed from the rest of the Bat titles. Batman barely even morned Damian in Batman, but had a whole arc devoted to it in Batman and Robin, for example. Snyder seems to have just been allowed to do his own thing.

      Can confirm, she is in Batwoman. Unfortunately, from the 2 issues I read it seems rather weak and I haven't seen Julia in anything else. I mean, they had a villain there whose main weapon was a knife and her name was.... Knife. Not kidding.

      It's written by Margueritte Benette who writes DC Bombshell's. A fun little weekly short read. But each issue essentially boils down to either action or lesbian love drama both rather poorly written. I like it because you see fem superheros in the spotlight going around fighting and stuff. But the actual writing is pretty bland.

    As I recall Alfred's hand was reattached at the end of the Jim Gordan Batman arc. It was acknowledged right around when Lucius Fox was going over how he saved Bruce Wayne's fortune (again), while Bruce did pull ups hanging from a sky scrapper's flag pole.
    So it's not really out of continuity. It was explained.
    Maybe not realistic, but this is the Universe Superman exists in so...

    What kind of kills threats like the Joker for me is that heroes like Flash and Booster Gold can time travel without difficulty. Batman can just go to the past and find out where Joker came from. And if it ever came down to it, Batman can call for help whilst fighting the Joker. Superman may be a liability if Joker has Kryptonite on him, but Wonder Woman or Martian Manhunter can arrive almost as fast. Or Flash himself.

The dialogue in the scene is just awesome since it feels like Bruce's and Joker's way of thinking almost switch from their usual one.

    Actually the problem with this story (as with most DC comics) is that it falls apart the moment you realize that he would have been caught within the first week.
    The Joker's biggest strength is that nobody knows who he is, this story either makes Batman the kind of 'worlds greatest detective' that doesn't understand how ID-ing a State Correctional Employee works...
    But then again, there's a reason they reboot the DCU so often...

    The Killing Joke origin of Joker as presented, is in fact canon... in other canon comics, Bruce himself has the same memories of that night where "the Red Hood" falls into the Ace chemicals vat, and it's WHY Jason took the identity of Red Hood. Because Bruce told him about that night, and he knew it would get under his skin.
