    If you're looking for memoirs about people's professions, I'd recommend Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty! It's about her experience working as a mortician in a crematory when she was in her twenties. It's got a lot of dark humor as well as a really interesting critique of how Western societies deal with death compared to funeral practices in other countries.

    Smoke Gets in your Eyes and other lessons from the crematory by Caitlyn Doughty is a great book from a professionals persepective that you would never think about. It's from her yours as a mortuary assistant, she is now a mortician and actually has a yt channel as well.

    My ex used to answer the phone for the ambulance in the UK and she said they had regulars that would call all the time. Protocol dictates that they have to send ambulances out to them and eventually it all goes to court so they can essentially get permission to not send ambulances to these people.
    Which is all good until they actually need an ambulance.

  • @Sthemingway
    @Sthemingway 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Ambulances are soooo expensive (in the US) even for people with awesome health insurance. I cannot imagine someone consenting to an ambulance ride unless intestines are no longer where they're supposed to be, a limb is hanging on by some sinews, or severe trauma about the face and head.

    That 'it takes courage to be disliked' book sounds amazing, if you do further content for it I'd be keen. It's on my radar now so in future I'll hope to get it from my library! It described perfectly how people from my prior toxic environments would blame external factors and shirk responsibility for their actions so it is definitely being read by me for even more perspective and validity.

    A recommendation on books related to other professions: Breaking Through by Katalin Kariko.
    It's a book about researchers in science (read: biochem) and Kariko's experiences on how the journey was and what are things she had to go through. It's very interesting and Kariko actually ended up winning a Nobel in 2023 despite all the hardships and drama in the field. I think you'd like it!

    I feel the same way about “The Girl On the Train” as you said. I ended up really disliking the main character, not because she was alcoholic, it was more that she had absolutely zero tendency in her to even TRY to make a good decision once in a while. It was a painful read.
    I’ve read “The Silent Patient” and I remember liking it because it was actually captivating.
    Glad to see you posting more videos :)

    I feel like we went through this phase where it was super popular for authors to write alcoholic mcs because they thought addiction was the only way to make someone interesting or different to avoid having perfect protagonists and it ended up making the protagonist super unlikable and frustrating to read about
