I haven’t dipped into this genre yet! Thanks so much for these recommendations! I’ll be checking these out 🙏 One of my favorite things in a story is the exploration of mind states that I myself am not familiar with. It nurtures empathy and shows me where my hang-ups are 😂
I read Normal People and Cleopatra & Frankenstein back-to-back by accident last year. Both SR and CM have moved to my instant-buy author list since. Good selection!
Everything I Never Told You absolutely wrecked me, I loved it so much. Good Material was also great, I enjoyed Alderton's dissection of their relationship. Gonna give your other rec's a try :)
Thanks for the recommendations!! I’ve been wanting to get more into true litfic and this seems like a great list! Pachinko has been on my TBR for ages 😆
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is entirely character driven. In film, Hitchcock wrote that plot or genre was the vehicle for the audience to examine character. All good fiction is about character. I think your definition of literary fiction requires tweaking.
Love the recs, thank you! My recommendation for you would be to read All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. It follows the story of 3 main characters and how their lives are inextricably linked. It made me cry, it made me angry, and it also made me giggle.
What a great video! I loved Cleopatra and Frankenstein as well, it was such an outstanding book! I’ve recently read Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason and it was a phenomenal read also. Highly recommend 🥰
You NEED to read Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton if you loved Ghosts and Good Material! I read all over her books and I am obsessed with EIKAL ❤ I also read Cleopatra and Frankenstein 2 years ago but didn't like it as much as everyone said they did - I think it was because I didn't relate to the main character much. But I'm giving it another go and re-reading it now, and I'm only a few chapters in but I feel like I relate with Cleo soooo much more! Looking forward to reading Pachinko as well 💖
I clicked on this video not even knowing that the first two were some of my favorite novels and I'm in the middle of good material right now!!! I thinkkk I may be able to level up into less beginner now and obviously we have similar taste! gained a sub from me
It's slow to read Also a lot of the time it seems like it's good because of its pretentious language, however it turns out to be yet another novel about a professor getting divorced See JM Coetzee and Jhumpa Lahiri
Literary fiction used to be called .... literature. And it was plot driven! Think 19th century. The plotless "character driven" trend, such as the books named in this video, is actually a "genre category" spawned by Modernism.
great list! i adore celeste ng & pachinko is one of my all time favorites!!! i would maybe add to anyone considering pachinko that its also generational and follows more characters than just sunya (even tho she is my fave!) i love the nix by nathan hill for another bit of a chunky option. it's about a man whose mother left him when he was a child, and now as an adult he sees her on TV going viral for throwing rocks at a prominent politician. it explores both his & his moms' lives as well as a few side characters. very interesting character psyches!
I also looove litfic that focuses on the human psyche. I’ve been waiting for more recs like this! Thank you 💖
James Baldwin, I feel heavily underrated for his insight into the human mind. Giovaniss's room will have you underlining so many passages.
AGREED. Ugh I LOVED Giovanni's Room
cleo and frank are my roman empire!!!! such a good debut
ME TOO
You sold me on Good Material. I've read all the other books and enjoyed them, but only truly loved Pachinko.
If you read it, come back and let me know how you like it! Something about Dolly Alderton's writing just speaks to me

I am just now getting into litfic and I love these as a place to start.
Everything I Never Told You absolutely wrecked me, I loved it so much. Good Material was also great, I enjoyed Alderton's dissection of their relationship. Gonna give your other rec's a try :)

Oooo I'll definitely check Hex out
Love the recs, thank you! My recommendation for you would be to read All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. It follows the story of 3 main characters and how their lives are inextricably linked. It made me cry, it made me angry, and it also made me giggle.
Okay that sounds like something I’d love, thank you!

Eeek!! Love that we have the same reading taste. Let me know what other books you love! Would love some recs from you
"The Melancholy of Untold History" by Minsoo Kang. You're welcome 😊, I don't know if it is literature.
What is the jazz music that's playing in the background?
I love this video I keep coming back to it 🎉
Would love to see book related vlog videos from you. Just subscribed and joined the discord 🤗
read all of sally's novels and conversations with friends is definitely my fave
Oooo that's good to know! I haven't read beautiful world yet but it's on my list
Ummmmm you're da best and we should be so blessed. Thank you for ya content!!
This title confuses me is literary fiction typically bad???
NOT AT ALL. But I do find some people have unfavorable opinions on Litfic just because they read ONE book that they didn't like
It's slow to read
Also a lot of the time it seems like it's good because of its pretentious language, however it turns out to be yet another novel about a professor getting divorced
See JM Coetzee and Jhumpa Lahiri
I think sometimes it can be so hit and miss because it’s such a broad genre that can encompass so many themes.
I’m sending you love❤❤❤

I’ll co-sign on Cleopatra and Frankenstein the rest can go in the bin
