According to the creators, the thing that was smacking them feeds on original thought, which explains why Vogons are bureaucratic and look like they've been smacked in the face multiple times.
This scene wasn't from any of the books, but is a gag that Douglas Adams thought of at the very start of this movies production, before he passed Away. Therefore this scene can be called one of douglas's.
Dusk By my knowledge the whole movie was based on his idea of a compressed introduction to his universe, so we can safely assume this is what concentrated Douglas essence is.
this is the best part of Hitchhiker's lore introduced by the film. it explains vogon behavior. i don't think their faces are shaped that way by genetics. i think their faces were slapped into that shape. imagine growing up in a place where every idea earned you a snack on the face? you'd probably stop having ideas. i think this is why vogons are terrible at poetry, thinking, spelling, why they need permission to pursue fugitives or why they'll stop pursuit if their hear the lunchtime whistle. this is a brilliant scene simply for the humor but down deep it explains the culture and motivations of the entire vogon race.
I really love these three actors and their portrayals of these characters, especially Martin Freeman's Arthur Dent. Such an awkward, timid character, and Freeman great at being that.
You should watch the original BBC series -- it puts the film to shame, marvin was destroyed in the film , as a fan of the BBC series and book (even the radio show) the film really dissapointed me.
What about the scene later where they come out of the building? Dent: Oh yeah? Well, what about coming here, and saving you? Yeah, you're welcome, my idea- *SMACK*
I was already satisfied with the movie. If you watch it carefully, and read the books, you'll find the movie follows the general story of the first book, but includes minor plots and LOTS of quotes from the other books.
There was a moment when Martin got smacked for the last time. It is where he said "Thank you. My idea! (smack) Stupid!" I loved this scene and loved that part.
It did release only a month before Batman Begins and Revenge of the Sith, so it's possible that the huge marketing campaigns of those films drowned it out for the American audience. It's unfortunate but such things happen. My two favorite films of all time, Jurassic Park and Return of the King, killed the box office performances of two other films I love, Last Action Hero and Master and Commander (respectively), just by simply being around at the same time.
I dont think so. I think of this movie often. when I hear 42 or see towels. :) and this scene was brilliant. I think the right people have seen it. and I love norman Rockwell. I know him from the green mile. he is a great actor. they all are.
Thanks for uploading this. I remember watching this for the first time. I could not stop laughing and had tears coming out of my eyes. I played that scene over and over again. I may have been trying to die from laughing because I was dying, from laughing. lol
That was one of my favourites when they get hit by those things just by thinking of an idea. Actually I tho-*THWACK* Ow! W-what was that? Anyone see that?
Lol sooo funny I laughed sooo veery hard that I started hurting because this part is sooo funny by them getting slapped in the face lots of times halirious lol 😂
I can see a producer coming up to Douglas and saying "The humor is too dry. Your film needs more slapstick." Then Douglas responds with "Not very original but okay," and this is the result.
I'm sure teachers all over the world would LOVE to have this in their class room 😁 "Can anyone tell me the correct formula".. "I think I know teach!". THWACK!!... "You thought wrong. Anyone else?" (Four hands tentatively go up) THWACK!THWACK!THWACK! TWACK! 😂🤣😂
More often than not, my current professional life is exactly this - have an idea, have pain for following it. It’s really gettin’ to be time to move on.
Arthur is simply the “every man” character caught in a situation beyond his control. He surely doesn’t want all this terrible stuff to occur but there is nothing he can do. At one point Ford tells him, “Don’t panic!” and Arthur responds, “Who said anything about panicking? This is just culture-shock. I woke up this morning and thought I’d have a nice relaxed day, do a bit of reading, brush the dog… It’s now just after four in the afternoon and I’m already being thrown out of an alien spaceship six light-years from the smoking remains of the Earth! You wait until I’ve settled down into the situation and found my bearings. Then I’ll start panicking!” Gosh… I can sure empathize more with Arthur considering I’ve felt rather the same way with the social media. The Earth is not destroyed but the people’s minds aren’t too sparkling. I was certainly panicking. XD thepitofultimatedarkshadows.wordpress.com/ Show less REPLY
Seems like they're some kind of suppressant to sapient life. However, their only method of determining whether something is a harmless animal of nature making weird noises or is a sapient creature is through detecting innovative behaviour patterns and some keywords. Which leads to the Vogons having somehow made it to where they are without having expressed innovation for most of their evolution.
According to the creators, the thing that was smacking them feeds on original thought, which explains why Vogons are bureaucratic and look like they've been smacked in the face multiple times.
Smacked in the face? More sucker-punched in the face many times by George Foreman and/or Mike Tyson😉😁🤣😈.

Thank you for this info

"Zaphod, what do you think?"
".....I think w-" *smack*
Lol, I cant help but feel that Arthur did that on purpose! :D
Schwatvogel he was testing a theory
Zaphod's is easily my favorite reaction.
Definitely set him up lol
He was testing his hypothesis that thought is what brings on the attack from those things.
Sure, he probably did. But he knew that Zapod was stupid enough, to fall for it. It’s what makes it even funnier to me.
So THAT'S why the Vogons are so dull, unimaginative, bureaucratic and callous.
They live on a planet which punishes them for thinking XD
Are we sure this is not were George W. Bush is from as well?
That's also why they have flat, pig noses
Some kind of telepathic tubeworm.
science reason I think you meant to say (insert any politician bureaucrat banker)
No no... you have to say it like a CURSE.
*"Oh what the... BELGIUM!!!"*
See? :D
This brings a more literal definition to the term "slapstick humour", which the Guide (the wiki) says was Adams' intent.
I really love these three actors and their portrayals of these characters, especially Martin Freeman's Arthur Dent. Such an awkward, timid character, and Freeman great at being that.
Mephostopheles Sam Rockwell killed this role

not a scorched barnacle on a toad's arse compared to simon jones' arthur...
Brilliant film LOVE IT ! 😂👍
I thought it was BRILLIANT 😂
"Don't think! Think and you're hit! They are FAST, faster than you believe. Don't have any ideas, don't imagine, and don't think! Good luck."
haha clever
Alons-y! A+ yo
….. *THWACK*
Very nice, funny too.
Took me a while to figure out what u meant. Now I do
I like how Zaphod tries to fight them at the end, lol.
XD
Hey how come zaphod doesn't have two heads in the movie?
he does! did you even watch it?
What about the scene later where they come out of the building?
Dent: Oh yeah? Well, what about coming here, and saving you? Yeah, you're welcome, my idea- *SMACK*

so disappointed they didnt make the rest of them, these were my absolute favorite books i read as a kid
This never gets old rofl
I know! I keep it bookmarked.
Most memorable scene.
I can't believe this piece of brilliant comedy failed commercially.
It did release only a month before Batman Begins and Revenge of the Sith, so it's possible that the huge marketing campaigns of those films drowned it out for the American audience.

No wonder he wanted to be left alone after this “adventure “.
Nicolas Cage Boii holy fuck how long did it take you to think of that side splitter?

When you have a teacher that hates it when you ask too many questions

That’s me at work, whenever I try to go to the boss with an ide…👋
Zarquon! What was that!?!?!?!
1:28 well I actually thought that would happen
1:28 DOH
This is why Vogon poetry has no thought to it.
No, it's why it's so deadly painful. It's a Vogon defense mechanism.
I love how this is literally in the infamous BBC Quarry, as seen in Doctor Who uncounted times.
a big big underated sf movie and a wonderfull comedy
**one of the most referenced story on the internet**
"oh, is so underated :'("
I'm sure teachers all over the world would LOVE to have this in their class room 😁

I shall name then... Swot-swatters
No problem, dude! ;D
Lol! My favourite part in the whole movie! =D
It's a _mind_ field.
Oh, so that's why Vogons are stupid! In psychology, we call this operant conditioning :)
Sam Rockwell is amazing XD
Basically the Voltrons are against independent thought.
Getting smashed in the face with shovels bahahahaha!!!
I think they’re slap sticks, as in “slapstick comedy”.
This scene perfectly describes how our modern society works.
I know there’s better out there. I’ve lived it. Sadly, I didn’t understand at the time how valuable it was. Time to recover or, if necessary, rebuild.
Boy, did you predict that accurately
Please expand?
"i think" smack "that they could be deterred by wearing a steel spine on your face" puts one on "thats why i think" smash
1:00 😂

The funniest scene in the film
*slow shuffling* Just watch.......Just watch........
lmao Martin Freeman, you adorable fucking hedgehog you!
at the end though they set it up for the next one
Ween ever some one at cartoon network gets a good idea
Sam Rockwell's coat looks oddly Tom Bakerish (last season).
That doesn't surprise me. Ironically this was the only new thing in the film which was a good idea.
That guay looks like a handmaid from the Handmaid’s tale 😂
1:28😂😂
