I understand why people don't like this movie. I really do. It differs wildly from the books, which are brilliant and hilarious. But frankly, this is one of my favorite movies. I saw it when I was a kid and I've loved it ever since. Yeah, the characters were a little different and the story was barely the same, but who really cares? The writing is hilarious, the movie's story is brilliant, and the casting is top-notch. Truly a great family comedy. And, while the story itself is technically different, the whole film is very much in the spirit of the books. Satirical, ridiculous, and at times almost surreal. I think Douglas Adams would've been proud.
Always find that quite weird, as the books themselves are based on a six part radio drama, which in itself was different to the book. Douglas always said that things need to be adapted to the medium they are in.
This film is in my opinion one of the best films ever made. The entire cast was perfect and they did such a good job selling the characters. Just brilliant. One of if not the top of my list for favorite movies all time. Honestly Mos Def was amazing in the movie and really made the movie. Fantastic movie and I'll forever have it in my collection.
Any Douglas Adams fan can tell you that Douglas Adams actually wrote a Film Script and tried to get it made, touting it around film companies. He was informed that no one was interested in comedy sci-fi, then the film Men in Black was released. Douglas Adams did get involved with one company in actual film production, but I don't know how far that got. I do remember him saying that it went on for a long time.
The hate the movie gets is because of blind nostalgia for the old TV show. And that's ALL it is, no matter what the haters say. I saw the TV show AFTER I had read the book(s), and after having seen the movie. Should come as no surprise that I thought the TV show sucked. So much in fact, that I couldn't watch more than a 3, maybe 4 episodes. It's hokey, over acted in that not so charming 70s way, low budget, and looks like shit. Looks almost worse, or at least as bad as classic Dr Who. It certainly doesn't do the books any justice IMHO. I love this movie. You can tell that Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay adaptation for it, and you can feel the love the cast/crew has for his work. It's really too bad that it didn't get at least one sequel, although I think Douglas adapted the ending beautifully in order for it to work as just one movie.
It was tbh not funny at all. Its a scifi Comedy and they added jokes that would only suit little toddlers. It is nothing like the original its almost as if they were trying to think up a completely different film. If that was the case id much rather it was hitchikers guide separate. The casting was not great. Mos Def (ford prefect) rubbish actor. I wasn't able to believe it was REALLY an alien from another planet who was insane bizzare and happy babby. I believed it actually was an actor who was just acting for a movie. its a comedy yet the jokes are shit. the plotline itself is mind boggingly dull. and nowhere as good as originals.
Me too. I love it. I have seen it a couple times. It was on last night, and I still laugh. Sam Rockwell is phenomenal. I love his portrayal. Every time he's onscreen he cracks me up.
I thought the casting was pretty good. Zooey was a pretty good Trillian, Martin was a perfect Arthur, but most importantly, Sam Rockwell IS Zaphod. For me anyway. Could not have done Zaphod more perfectly. My issue is the movie was them faffing about with the pace and order.
So here's my deal - this movie brought me into the fandom and AFTER watching the movie about three times and making a costume from it did I read the series. I do see why many are angry that it "didn't do the books justice", but that's the thing I love about this entire series - there are so many iterations to talk about and each one is different from another. So without knowing anything about the books, it's a darn great movie and it's entertaining and all. I don't believe that the movie is crap for not explicitly following the books and I respect the director's choices 👌 My sermon is over and I love Sam Rockwell thanks to this movie goodnight
As a fan of the BBC series first, then the books I didn't hate the movie. I just thought it was really disappointing, and got the impression there probably wouldn't be another one made after it bombed. I'm glad you liked it, but it's hard for me to appreciate it for what it is in its own right when I really wanted it to be something else. I can't hate it, because I love the idea of hhg and if it made some people read the books who otherwise wouldn't have then I'd rather have it than not.
According to what I read on Wikipedia, actually Douglas Adams worked on the screenplay and his final draft is very close to what they filmed. So… From the author himself :-)
Furthermore, the long-rumored Jim Carrey, or any of the other names I heard were rumored for Zaphod, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Robert Downey, Jr., Johnny Depp, Zaphod is something none of them are that Sam Rockwell is: Cool.
Love all his books and I love this movie. It captures the spirit of Adams' satire perfectly and the cast is wonderful. Sam Rockwell as Zaphod is pure brilliance...he brings the character a dimension that is lacking in the book.
Honestly, I liked this movie. Sure it lured away from the story a lot, and there's no question that it would be better if Douglas Adams was alive to help produce it, but I strongly admire the attempt. In the foreward of Adams' book, which was written 20 years before this was made, it says that he was trying to make a film of his stories. This was it. Sure it wasn't the best in the entire franchise, but it got the job done, and it entertained the hell out of me. What I also really liked was the fact that the studio made a lot of effort to not rely so much on Computer Generated Imagery by building authentic sets, structures, costumes and even props. Furthermore, the puppets were a bonus. Sure they weren't the best puppets, but it's way better than watching some cheesey CGI character talk with a real person on a green screen movie set like in most movies nowadays.
I love this film so much - and I'm very grateful they decided to go the Jim Henson route with the puppetry rather than full CGI. I think it's dated so well... and Sam Rockwell cracks me up in it
nothing will replace the books that are implanted in my head I don't care how much the BBC or anybody tries to rehash one of the finest pieces of science fiction ever.
I had no idea Sam was also Guy in Galaxy quest. I looked him up and the guy (no pun intended) has been in so many movies. He's awesome and I loved him in this movie too.
I find that I can just put this movie on an relax because it is interesting but comforting at the same time. It captures the energy and innocence of the original show without copying it.
I think a sequel would almost certainly make more now for a 2015-19 release knowing the success of every actor in this film has improved greatly as they are all more known and have had bigger roles, I could see that as many plenty, especially with so many sci-fi things coming up like Avengers 2, Justice League, Warcraft movie, Star Wars Ep VII and all, adding another film from a cult classic legendary book series would work
When they arrive @ Amagrathea,& after the "Sorry we're closed" messages, Zaphod retort is "Take us down",totally ignoring 1st & the following appreciation messages w/notification of gift of 2 nuculear tipped ICB🚀s; is the Brannigan moment
The Movie was just AWESOME. Really, I like the movie more than the book, seriously. And sometimes I get depressed just because I know there is not going to be a sequel. But still, I love that movie. I loved the extra characters and the extra places. The book was just too short, but the movie explained very well all the facts, planets and characters. LOVE THE MOVIE.
Sequels are usually not as good. Why mess with this movie with a sequel?? This movie is hilarious and very re-watchable. You would only be let down with a sequel to be honest.
This is truly a fantastic movie. The characters are just played so well, and the Vogon's look better than CG. Belongs in my Top Five Movies of all time. The book is incredible as well, its a must see/read.
I enjoy this movie a lot. I'm a fan of the radio series, TV series and books. I think they managed to bring the spirit of it all with this film. The creature work is fantastic. The cast are perfect.
This movie had a treasure chest of extremely funny jokes But absolutely no timing It was like watching a good comic in a hospital bed on drugs trying to tell jokes
Yeah I watched the movie and loved it and I just bought the book 2 weeks ago and its exactly like the book almost word for word. Maybe it differs later but so far it's perfect
I absolutely loved the movie. although i was never acquainted with its prior renditions. as such i understand if people who loved and were more tuned into such prior iterations that the film would be more than i jult , still as a standalone film from someone not in the know, i can say the film was fantastic. seriously, fun witty and cast'd perfectly. this film deserved a sequel or prequel.
It's actually better that this movie didn't do well with international box office, because if it had, there would be multiple crappy sequels. As it is now, it will stand alone.
For what it’s worth, Sam Rockwell wasn’t just trying to be funny when he said “They couldn’t get Jim Carrey, so they got me”… this is actual fact haha. They genuinely wanted Jim to play Zaphod, and almost wrote the screenplay with him in mind, and basically just told Sam to do his best version of Jim the whole time lol 😂 (Remember, this was probably right at the zenith, if not the very beginning of his height in Hollywood)
nine minutes of my life very, very well spent - but the absolutly most ingenious part was Alan Rickman's voice right at the end... The very spelling of awesome
I still don't know why this movie caught so much flak. Yeah, the books are a billion times better, but no adaptation ever lives up to it's beginnings. As a movie, I thought it was great.
And, one can say that none of the later adaptations, for different media/mediums, quite lived up to the radio play; I felt strongly this way at the beginning. But Adams himself adapted the story each time around, for each medium - different for the books, different again for the original TV series, and, one more time, different for the big screen, at least as far as he got with the screenplay before his untimely death. Ultimately, It All Works.
it was disliked because it was too Americanized. The book was written with some brilliant dry humor, then you get the Americanized movie where the jokes feel forced.
Lol, a billion times better, well theres your reason then. If the books were ten out of tens, then the film with your argument is 10 out of (10/10,000,000,000) in other words....pure shite.
My father used to read these books when he was in the army and when this movie came out I watched it and thought it was the funniest/silliest movie I'd seen, definitely different to the books but as far as film adaptations go I feel this was made with love and reverence to the original spirit of the story and kept Hitchhiker's in the zeitgeist atleast for my generation (I'm 23)
" They couldn't afford Jim Carrey so they got me ". Thank God. Jim Carrey is best in small, TINY doses. Jim Carrey as Zaphod Beeblebrox would've really dragged the film down.
I enjoyed the Film for what it was, but it was hardly like a watching Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy tbh. The BBC series from the early 80's did that just fine.
I mostly loved this movie, even though I know it doesn't follow the book very well. The one thing that almost ruined it for me was the cheesy love story, it felt very unnecessary and almost like it didn't quite belong.
this film is so under rated. they had thought of it as a 2 film deal at the start... but takings were not enough to warrant a 2nd excursion to the restaurant at the end of the universe. sam well-rocked it and it was a perfect cast. "its a great story to begin with" - don't hear that often in hollywood ;)
I listened to it on radio first then I read the first book. The TV series was great (in the days when BBC did comedy) with a super cast. I'd read all the books before the movie came out and I enjoyed that too (Zoe wasn't good looking enough), but the fact is, it is a great story, in fact so great Douglas Adams should have titled the whole thing "42".
If you have any even remote liking for this film adaptation and haven't done so already I urge you to go read the original books. While the movie surely isn't as horrible as a lot of people say it is, the books had so much more charm in the "comedy" aspect for me than this movie could even dream of having.
For those comparing it to the old TV series, fyi, it was a radio series first, which was great. The TV series was kind of crap, too. In order of quality: Radio Books Film TV series
Daniel Appleton Oh, I appreciate, I jsut watched the first spisode of the TV show before and thought it had lost all of its comic timing, and was jsut rehashing the radio show but using really bad sfx instead of clever and hilariously. It was kind of like someone explaining punchlines rather than making jokes.
Tee-hee! I don't think Vogon Poetry itself is so bad, but Vogons don't appear to have the best dental hygiene! They look like their breath could knock a buzzard off a shitwagon!
am i the only one who remembers the 11 kricket robots ( yes that's how there names are spelled ) from the books!? or how Marvin was trapped in a swamp with nothing but a living mattress to talk to? can anyone tell me if they remember this stuff !?
wow, from reading the comments, I never even knew people didn’t like it. I freaking love this movie. I’ve watched it over and over and over through the years. It was my first exposure to Douglas Adams in any wat shape or form. Of course it strays from the original material. ALL movies do! Jeez, I guess some “super intelligent” Adams fans are not quite capable of acknowledging things like that. Dah well who cares. One of my personal faves.
@20cFilmWannabe - According to Martin Freeman: No Sequel For 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy'. Here's what he said: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" ended with Zaphod, Trillian, Marvin and Arthur traveling toward Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. "There isn't [any possibility of a sequel] at this point," Freeman said. "I found that out from the horse's mouth, [director] Garth Jennings. I had dinner with him and he said [the first one] just didn't do well enough."
I pray they never make a sequel - to me it was like throwing a bunch of nake celebrities on it with some propane and lighting it up in a bonfire of worlds.
Yes different from the books which I've read loads of times and love but this is also utterly ridiculous and fantastic. The cast were perfect I thought and I really enjoyed it. Better than the tripe that is normally turned out by Hollywood.
You need to take it the same way CinemaSins would: ignore all other media. Focus on the film as a stand-lone work of art.
That's likely just as Adams himself would wish for it to be approached.
@@barrettwbenton he even wrote some of the earlier drafts before he died going way off the book
Ok I wrote it off when it came out, but I will give it another try but ime sure I will still hate it. Lets hope ime pleasantly surprised.
Always find that quite weird, as the books themselves are based on a six part radio drama, which in itself was different to the book. Douglas always said that things need to be adapted to the medium they are in.
That awkward moment when Snape and Fillius come together and make one manic depressed robot.

Oh my, all these years I thought the Vogons are CGI'd
nope
created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop
For those comparing it to the old TV series, fyi, it was a radio series first, which was great. The TV series was kind of crap, too. In order of quality:
Radio
Books
Film
TV series
Daniel Appleton
My point stands.
Daniel Appleton Well, fortunately I wouldn't be born for another 6 years so I didn't have that problem.
Daniel Appleton
Oh, I appreciate, I jsut watched the first spisode of the TV show before and thought it had lost all of its comic timing, and was jsut rehashing the radio show but using really bad sfx instead of clever and hilariously. It was kind of like someone explaining punchlines rather than making jokes.
*Thought this was a Nickelback video from the thumbnail.*
Brilliant film
Warwick and Alan Rickman created one of the most memorable robots in entertainment!
Google is mind reading now, I thought of watching this movie again yesterday and the 80s series
Tee-hee! I don't think Vogon Poetry itself is so bad, but Vogons don't appear to have the best dental hygiene! They look like their breath could knock a buzzard off a shitwagon!
Oh I want to see it again!
First encounter of THHGTTG was a (bad) cassette copy of the radio theater, then books then the BBC film.
am i the only one who remembers the 11 kricket robots ( yes that's how there names are spelled ) from the books!? or how Marvin was trapped in a swamp with nothing but a living mattress to talk to? can anyone tell me if they remember this stuff !?
The whole thing is basically saying "fuck you" to George Lucas, and I am amused
wow, from reading the comments, I never even knew people didn’t like it.
I love how the likes are stuck at 42, and me saying it feels like I'm captain obvious XD
@20cFilmWannabe - According to Martin Freeman: No Sequel For 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy'. Here's what he said:
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" ended with Zaphod, Trillian, Marvin and Arthur traveling toward Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
Happy 70th today Douglas!
Yes different from the books which I've read loads of times and love but this is also utterly ridiculous and fantastic. The cast were perfect I thought and I really enjoyed it. Better than the tripe that is normally turned out by Hollywood.
Mos Def sounded high asf.
Was anxious to see it.
Imagine a TV series of the same cast and quality...
Sam’s influences are all seen 😂 intergalactic surfer in charge of too much
great movie
I loved this movie.
