Kurt was the Canadian John Belushi. He was Canada's favorite neighbor.

I still have a copy of " Guess whos back" and love the guitar work on that album. " Kurts song" was my favorite on BCs " above the ground"

Few guitarists can construct a short yet skilled solo, time and again. Cummings would rarely allow Winter to show his real chops, but this didn't stop Winter's brilliant brief leads,.plus slide! e.g. Hand me down world(Winter's song) Rain dance(possibly best short lead) Star Baby(great slide). One more note,Kurt's acoustic play and humor will always be a major reason why Guess Who Rule 1971-1974!

Kurt Winter was my favorite guitarist bar none. He was also an incredible songwriter, writing or cowriting alot of the bands best known songs. I still think "The Guess Who - Live at the Paramount" LP was Kurts finest hour. That solo on Pain Train still sends chills down my spine, and side 2 of that original album he played like a man possessed by some demon (along with the rest of the band of course) it was that gritty. He may be gone, but thankfully we still have the recorded music to enjoy when ever we want. All those great albums. Long Live Kurt Winter!

One of the most under-appreciated guitarists of all time. I absolutely love, and always have loved Kurt's playing.

One of my favourite bands. There's so much in their discography. Loved Kurt Winter's guitar sounds. I don't think they even got to "Hang On To Your Life" and "Heartbroken Bopper" which Winter co-wrote with Burton Cummings as well. Two more of my favourite Guess Who songs. But from their inception, this was a special band that delivered monster results and sounds. Long live the Guess Who!

My sister once told me Kurt was one of the funniest, laid back and talented people she'd ever known, and it shows through his music….

Kurt had a picture on the dust jacket of the album road food and in that picture he was digging in the garbage while the rest of the band was smiling for a photo and I could tell that he was a guy who was who he was and had nothing to prove to the world. As a kid seeing that photo it really resonated with me and I wanted to be Kurt Winter. The following year I bought a guitar and I've never stopped playing since

I loved how this band wore their local roots on their shoulder. Kurt sounds like one regular guy who was a kick ass guitar player.

Used to show up once in awhile at Gondola Pizza in Fort Garry , he had some great stories touring Japan, and writing songs, his wife had a Pink VW Bug and he had a blue Chevy 56 if I recall, really friendly guy unpretentious would be an understatement .

very true, Einarson's comments about Winter's legacy with The Guess Who. Although they had more radio success during Bachman's tenure, the majority of diehard fans look toward Winter's era as the golden age for that group.

Saw them live with Kurt in 1971 at Brockport State College. To this day -- perhaps the best concert I've ever attended. Back then, many popular bands could not really "cut it" in a live performance -- The Guess Who was one band that could.

Thanks for posting. Great catch in recording a live broadcast such as this. It is a shame that Kurt Winter did not keep moving in music after The Guess Who and, of course, that he died at 51. It is hard to learn much about Winter these days, especially down here in Florida. The Guess Who was popular here, nonetheless, particularly during the days of Kurt Winter in the band. It had some of the same feel and attraction of Southern Rock - a Northern cousin.

the management had screwed everything up ripping off the band, they all lost their shirts to the tax man, Kirt had bought his parents a house on Clarence ave ( i think, been awhile since I lived in the peg) Well, after the financial troubles, His parents had passed and he moved in there, he had a flag pole out the back and would fly the canadian flags he'd saved from the shows...had an old little 12x30 shack, we would toot up in and chill ( it was wall papered with memoribilia)....sometimes...kids playin outside he'd start to play, just for him, ignored us, or me....it was .........

Robert your so right I met Kurt In 1978 and talk about a real guy with a huge heart we often talked about my writing and I did give Kurt one of my pieces and he had said he would take it to burt and see what he thinks (long story) with this said thoseeeee lol, party nights (later on), at the The Grant (we called it back in them days) and the speak easy club (norlander) not sure if we threw more darts, then beers (smiles) but after closing we did head back to the shack which he called the man cave and we all knew when vickie gave that face we were gone (smiles) awesome wife to kurt anyway he was one man if you had a friend in kurt it was for life not just a party I will always miss Kurt and its Sad that a song that made the charts was stolen thats as far as I will go here. Kurt even said it would and others know what it was right (burt). god bless and here`s to you Kurt A Man who gave so so much.Love ya Brother.

It was not easy coming in to replace the great Randy Bachman but Kurt did it and he did it with his own distinct sound. I love his guitar work on Share the Land. May God bless Kurt Winter's soul.

“Bus Rider” is essentially the same story as “Takin’ Care of Business” but it is a far superior song. Bachmann is a strange, quirky guy and Winter was ‘salt of the earth’. I love this band in any incarnation but just listen to Kurt’s solo on “Pain Train” from Live at the Paramount. Bachmann was riff oriented with jazz sensibilities, Winter was a rock and roller. One of the best but least appreciated…better than Bachmann.

He had some bitchin' leads, especially in Heartbroken Bopper. And since he wrote or co-wrote a lot of great stuff he certainly was as much the Guess Who as Bachman.

Kurt was a monster guitar player. The solo from Live "Pain Train" is one of my favorite guitar solos. His death affected me, still does. I saw Burton earlier this year and he did "Hand Me Down World" as a tribute. He also wrote "Kurt's Song". Great commentary. We'll always have the music. R.I.P. Kurt.

The Sugar Shack. Just feeling a bit nostalgic.
I was his bartender for three years...lol.. probably just one of them.
He came into my bar one night wearing shorts , some cut off tee and spark plugs hanging from his Acapulco hat...thought he was some kinda nut just hanging around after the bar closed....then he started clearing tables.
After that ...a great friendship formed.
Even after all this time has passed, I think about him often. And still miss the way he always made me smile.

There were so many great bands circa 1970. The Guess Who sold more records in 1970 than the Beatles. Their chart success mirrors and even the exceeds CCR. They were as tight a live act as ever played. Their harmony arrangements were so good yet never discussed. Great songs, great production, great musicians…professional musicians, part jam band part hit making machine. How are they not in that stupid R&R HOF? It is a matter of taste but it is my belief they were not only Canada’s greatest band, they were at moments the best band in the world amongst The Beatles, Stones, Zep, Floyd, The Dead…and dozens of other amazing players and bands. I love Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and The Band and I kinda like Rush, April Wine and Pat Traverse but goddamit a hot Guess Who show would not take a back seat to any of the other great Canadian bands.

Where is the footage at :25 from (sounds like they dubbed audio from the Paramount show here)? Years ago, someone had a commercial for some kind of compilation album, and there was a clip of Burt in the Bruins jersey, singing "That was the day we ran into Albert Flasher." Would love to see the whole show.
