Awesome tutorial! I just started using a knitting machine and decided to search and see if anyone was knitting them single layer. I’ve done about 3 doubled and it just seems to make too thick of a fabric for where I live. I also don’t like using twice as much yarn for one hat. 😝 So I’m going to try this method! Thank you!

This is the same technique used on circular sock machines to create a hung hem . I have often wondered if it would work on the Addi or Sentro. I have the same yarn in my stash so I might need to make this hat to match yours - less the pom as I don't have any of those yet.

I do a safety line and then pick up the stitches with knitting needles, but this is great for those that don't know how to knit. I just hate doing all double layer hats. Everyone doesn't live in a greatly cold area that needs such a thick hat. Second thing is that it takes too much yarn to make a single hat with double layers verses a single layer hat. Especially these days with yarn prices going up and up like groceries. :( Thanks for the video. I'll try this method and see if I'd like to do it this way better. It's an option.

The black marker is permanent and last a long time before I have to redo it but I think nail polish would work beautifully! I like black because it’s easiest to see. I have a permanent black marker and would never use black nail polish other than for that …Lol…. so I will likely stick to this way but ABSOLUTELY…. Try the nail polish! 🥰

Yes it is. If you watch the video I show you exactly why. It helps to to see the stitches you need to pick up. Always use a contrasting color of waste yarn. I have a pattern coming out on Friday that you may like.

Hi there. Thank you for your tutorial on this. I'm struggling to make a beanie for myself with a head circumference of 56 cm or 22 inches. How many rows should I knit my beanie?
Number of rows only changes the length. Not the width. Check my beanie playlist. I have a beanie that is made with the tubes sideways so you can make them as wide as you like.
I've been knitting beanies on a standard loom for a few years, and added brims the same style as this video, but I've never used scrap yarn to start. Is that necessary on a loom machine?
I find it easier to pick up the stitches that way. Seeing them on a standard loom is much easier and waste yarn is not needed. On a machine, I would say it is necessary.
I'm a crocheter, but a knitting friend convinced me to buy a Sentro. Is it possible to do a knit brim like this on the knitting machine, and then cast off and continue a crochet pattern for the top of a hat?

Otherwise what would I do with all the stitches..........or do I crochet into the stitches on the needle and then pull it out? Once I connect row 1 to row 20, is one more row of knitting sufficient?
You could also use weights!! I use steel fishing weights (didn't want to use lead for obvious reasons) attached to clothespins with a small piece of yarn. I use 5 or 6 clothespins on the king and 3 on the 22 with 1 or 2 weights attached to each depending on their size.
I did 20 which really only adds 10 rows to the brim width cause it’s folded over. If you do 6 rows then fold over you only have 3 rows of brim width which is very skinny but of course will work. You will also be short 7 rows then for the length. Lol….. know what I mean ? So if you drastically cut your brim length then add a few more rows to the body of the hat. Hope this all makes sense!
I made this and it was so easy but the yarn I used made some bad stitches. I only have walmart brand or red heart super saver and they both are terrible on the Addie both sizes
Not sure why that happened without seeing what you did. Use a contrasting color of waste yarn so you can clearly see that you are hooking the right loops.

It helps you to see the stitches that you have to work when bringing the end up to make a brim. Or, when you need to work and stitches when your project is off the machine. It helps you immensely. Not every project uses waste yarn but when it’s needed there is a definite purpose.
First attempt...made it too long haha! I think im confused on how many rows. So, 20 for the brim... then another 60? So total of 80? It covers my eyes 😂
10:08 tried again several times. here it gets SO tight for me!! On the last 10 ir so stitches i thought it was going to break machine and if i tried to turn the handle it makes the most horrible clacking sound. I couldnt get any more stitches attached so gave up. I have a Sentro not an addi, so maybe thats why

Im wondering if im not actually attaching stitch #1 to pin #1 which is causing some kind of rotation of the brim and by the time i reach nearly the end its twisted too tight.

The finished beanie is 9 3/4” long and the part that’s folded under for the brim is an extra 1 1/2 inches.

That’s a tough question. The best answer I can give is 3 or 4 weight and yarn that is softer to the touch rather than rough feeling.

Red heart is a tough one. Feel every color and only choose the softer feeling ones. If it’s rough it won’t work.

Just follow exactly what I do.
After the brim add 40 more rows.
It should totally work on your Sentro. I wish I could see what you were doing. Loosen up your tension and try again. 🥰

I cleaned my machine recently and it has made a big difference.
It sounds the same on my machine as well on the second row even after cleaning
I haven’t noticed but I’ll listen for it.
The second row always is harder on my machine as well. I think it's because the yarn gets pulled a little tighter so the needles struggle to pop up.
