Saw Goldie play with the Gulls in San Diego @15 -16’ , we would just wait to hear the scratches via the PA come game time when players did the pre game skate, and when he was dressed we never left our seats till intermission, even then we waited till both teams and refs skated opposite ends and made it into the dressing rooms. Didn’t want to miss a Billy Goldthorpe scrap and never did. I believe 2 years he played in SD, 80-81’ and when he didn’t dress, Goldie was dressed in civies to the 9’s and his female entourage and cronies were very cool and nice to us. He wasn’t dressed - suited up that night versus the Spokane Flyers and several scraps throughout the game broke out , scraps had 14k plus in stand’s nightly, going nuts and calling out “ Goldie Goldie Goldie “ as he sat in lower bowl attacking zone sitting on edge of seat or standing just biting his lips. We talked a few times throughout his SD career and was really respectful to us young HS freshman. Bill wasn’t with the Mariners - switched names - ownership changes.. and it’s the WHA days , Houston Aeros in town and a full bench clearing brawl breaks as Glen “ Thumper “ Irwin ( D ) rocked the Aeros goalie and the benches emptied… Willie O’ree / Gordie Howe , Mark & Marty Howe all played with Houston, the most amazing craziest brawl NEVER caught nor found on TV - Utube to this day. 79’ , I was 14 at the time. Man what memories. Thanks Goldie #18
Thanks for the memories. I used to watch Goldie play back in the early 70's when I was just a little kid and he played for Syracuse. I lived in Utica and remember seeing him, Hanson, the Carlson brothers, etc. play at my little hometown barn on Friday and Saturday nights if I did good in school that week. I was raised on good, Olde Time Hockey!!!!
At 21:30, Goldthorpe reminisces about his time playing in Binghamton for the Dusters (1975-1976) and recalls there was a back-up goalie as tough as anybody on the team who loved to "throw 'em", but he can't remember his name. I know this video is almost 3 years old when I see it, but if anybody cares, I'm almost positive he's talking about Jim Pettie, aka Jim "Seaweed" Pettie, or "Weedy" to his friends. Pettie was briefly a goalie on the same Dusters team Goldthorpe played on, and he was well known for his fighting prowess. Pettie amassed 145 penalty minutes in one year playing for the IHL's Dayton Gems. Pettie was good enough to make it (albeit briefly) to the NHL, even starting 16 games as a backup for the Boston Bruins in the 1978-1979 season. Pettie eventually settled into the Rochester NY area in the suburb of Greece, where he passed away in 2019. Here's a link to a remembrance article written locally shortly after he passed: pickinsplinters.com/2019/08/31/former-amerks-and-bruins-goalie-jim-pettie-loved-team-loved-life/
(I'm) Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario (formerly the cities of Port Arthur & Fort William, The Lakehead-Northwestern Ontario), and watched Goldie play briefly with the Thunder Bay Twins, OHA Senior A hockey team (in the late 70,s) (2nd time) & he could skate & hit. Senior A hockey, in Canada, was on par with the IHL or NAHL; it's just that all players had "regular" jobs to go to (ie. @ the Paper Mill/Saw Mill or were Teachers, or Police Officers). Billy Goldthorpe also played in several play-off games against my hometown Thunder Bay Twins, when he suited up with the Spokane Flyers Sr. A team WIHL. There were many "tough" guys , in the 70's, from Thunder Bay. Ie.: Bob "Battleship" Kelly (St. Louis, Pittsburgh NHL); "Wild" Willy Trognitz (band from the IHL, played with Cincinnati Stingers WHA); Lee Fogolin (Buffalo, Edmonton NHL); Connie "Mad Dog" Madigan (St. Louis NHL, Portland WHL); Lynn Margarit ( IHL); John Schella (Houston WHA)> Etc., Etc. Of course The Staal Brothers are From Thunder Bay.
Would have loved to see the Minnesota Minnesota fighting saints play the flyers, bet schultz and Kelly and the boys wouldn't have run around like the did.
harpo drilled palmateer ? that's a classic !!! could there be more of a mismatch ? what was palmateer thinking slashing probably the most notorious fighter / lunatic of his day ?
Guy tells these stories like it's just another Tuesday, beautiful

Thanks for sharing that Jack, love to hear about the old school guys! RIP Jim Pettie
I went to youth hockey camp (Broome Dusters) and Goldthorpe was ‘coaching’. The guy was a maniac.
I grew up playing hockey during that era. I played peewee through high school and the college in the Binghamton NY area.

Great interview. This would be a real good book.
Goldie's got a good sense of humor.
