Oddly enough my circle pad died due to AC New Leaf. After replacing it, Smash didn't menage to break it again

Facts, I had to buy a replacement and everything. Although the battle that broke it was legendary.

I cancelled my Rise of Lyric pre-order for this game. And it was glorious.

Good choices feel so much better when the goodness is augmented by hindsight.
At the time, it was just a Smash game vs a 3D Sonic game... Smash games had a history of being great, even if the then previous one was... somewhat contentious; while 3D Sonic games had a history of always being somewhat contentious.
Now we know it's one of the worst 3D Sonic games ever made vs a pretty competent Smash game with the best side mode of that generation.

Smash Run bringing back City Trial was genius. Easily my most played mode in any Smash game.

I was so excited that Smash was headed to the 3DS, I wanted a portable Smash game since the original DS. I remember in high school digitally pre ordering this version on my 3DS, waking up before headed to school I turn on my system to “Software download complete” I was the happiest 16 year old.
Four years before ultimate
Smash 3DS (and Wii U for that matter) was so strange. The exclusive modes and stages were really interesting. I wish I had more people to play it with because I had so much hype with the demo
Also shout out to the Smash Controller app that let you use your 3DS as a controller for Wii U
I still have that app on my 3ds lol
It wasn't an app though, it was a feature inside the games themselves. I remember participating at a local SSB for Wii U tournament and using my 3DS copy of the game as a controller since I was used to play the 3DS version. I even managed to reach third place with it.
@@mds_main it was built into the game, yeah, but there was also a dedicated app you could download onto your 3DS if you didn't have the 3DS version of the game and still wanted to use it as a controller.

The fact that 3DS version of SSB got the cool multiplayer mode via Smash Run that really has fun with the various famous enemies of Nintendo while the Wii U one ended up with an incomprehensible/bizarrely designed board mode in Smash Tour (that even botches the easy concept of Mario Party but with fights)?
It really does sum up both those consoles respective places in the gaming market.
For real, the 3DS was Nintendo's main console for the 8th generation, and I think it's a shame they didn't try to work some form of backwards compatibility for the Switch.
The fact that the 10 year anniversary for Smash 4 is next year is terrifying. I was in 6th grade, I remember watching GX videos predicting characters. Smash 4 was the game that made me a die-hard Nintendo fan.

I will die on the hill of preferring Smash 3DS to Smash Wii U. I feel like Wii U generally got more attention and reception because it was the one on a home console, but just purely talking about content between Smash Run, the better stage selection (imo) and the way better Classic Mode, I just think 3DS is the better game. It's honestly a shame Smash Run never made an appearance after this game as it was such an ingenious way of extrapolating from the properties repped in the roster while also being a really replayable beat 'em up mode
I'm pretty sure that most people agree Smash 3DS is the better game overall, Smash Wii U only looks and control better due to being on Nintendo's first HD home console
this was my most played 3ds game eclipsing just past 500 hours when including both the base game and the demo. It was my absolute favorite also factoring in the fact that I wanted to be the best player made it so fun. I remember waking up at 3 am to download the game off the eshop just to have it ready for it by school. But I was so excited that I couldn’t go back to sleep. I watched the bubbles drop into the icon all with excitement.
I miss custom specials, but I don't miss unlocking them. That was a real pain

I remember playing this game on my new 3DS with my amiibos during long car trips and it was such a good time!
I remember when TH-camrs imported Japanese copies to play the game a month earlier and most of them only played the game for like 2 months until the Wii U version launched and never touched it ever since. So despite Smash 3DS selling more than double the amount of copies and having more long-term saving graces like Smash Run and a better classic mode, the Wii U version was the more popular version online.
You think you feel old? Some of the GVG crew were in their 30’s when Smash 4 came out! Video games can really blur the passage of time.

I don’t play Smash hardly at all anymore, but if Ultimate had Smash Run, I would return to that regularly
The only thing Ultimate was missing for me was a single player mode that kept me coming back to it. Spirits are neat but WoL just felt like a slog for some reason.
I will say this is my favorite ssb of all time. Smash Run is undeniable, some levels different from wii u. I got the demo which only let you play 25 times, so I played once and put it into sleep mode and charged and picked up where I left off. Mega Man all day every day. When the 3ds eshop was dying, I re-downloaded the demo to preserve its beauty. Also all those mega man exe, x, zero all those wii outfits.
Besides wonderful mega man all the characters were better like ike his up tilt. So many moves better.
Of course you can edit and mod characters with upgrades making them insane but fun to go crazy beast mode with in smash run or just vs other beast mode made characters.
Just the fact that all the customizable specials per character.
Like Zero Suit Samus side B, remember that one that is like a red knife she stabs with? It wasn't that but acted that way. Way faster and more offensive than normal side b.
Overall the engine in ultimate is better like move slows and decays if used to often, air dodge controls, all better.
But 3ds, unique strange different ultimate moves. Like bowser turning huge and all his moves having elemental effects, vs now a picture of huge bowser in background and its a scope shot. By the way my favorite thing is to dodge that with mega man.
Up b rush on ground bounce up, then jump to the side, then bowser is aiming for mega man, then up b rush again now out of screen, then when bowser now running out of time just swings, you air dodge, then fast fall after you are neo and dodge bowsers fat fist and many other ultimates.
Anywho ssb4 on 3ds is my favorite game.
I had purple OG 3DS, this game ruined my circle pad, kept playing without it. Mario Kart ruined my R button.
Got a purple n3dsxl, woot woot the adventure continues.
I still play and love ultimate, cuz more characters and etcetera, but my favorite ssb is on 3ds forever and ever and ever.
P.s. can we please get 100 more echo characters?

How chrom is a mix echo of ike and marth. Do that with 100's of Pokémon mix and match those elements and attacks Pikachu all of them, make magnemite and staryu show up.

Finally someone else says it! People nowadays act like Smash 4 is some stain in the franchise history, completely forgetting that it was every bit as hype as every game in the franchise before it and had its own fair share of awesome moments and even its own defining franchise moment (Cloud's inclusion being THE moment any and all gaming 3rd parties were officially on the table for getting in)
I won't argue whether it was the best in the franchise but its easily every bit as deserving of the praise, prestige, and most of all respect we give the other games. This goes for the Wii U one as well of course

I remember getting Smash 3DS for my birthday back in 2014. (Consdering it came out a few weeks before, it was no surprise.)
It was my favorite 3DS game. Pokemon X & Y were number 2. (I got those alonside my 3DS just the year prior.)
Pac-man and Megaman were the two characters that a Smash clone could’ve co-opted to steal legitimacy from Smash.
The fact that Smash nabbed those icons basically solidified Smash’s dominance as the quintessential gaming crossover

I played the hell out this game until the wii u version came out, especially that unlimited demo from Club Nintendo. Mega Man is crazy fun to play as and i legit teared up during his reveal.

Something weird about StreetSmash:
It's the only mode in the Smash series that gives PAC-MAN KO sound effects (his iconic death sound from the original arcade game).
It makes me wonder why that wasn't ever his Star KO "yell."

38:55 Hell yes, Tin Pin Smasher (I'm calling Streetsmash that from now on and you can't stop me) was so dang good.
I miss Streetpass and wish the Switch was portable enough to justify having it. The days of taking my 3DS on campus and getting Streetpass from random people were the highlight of an otherwise stressful and dull part of my life.
I also enjoy that the 3DS version has different Trophies from the Wii U version... I miss trophies :(

I still go back to Smash Run every few months. It's fun for quick pick up and play sessions.
When you think about it, City Trial and Smash Rush kind of are a type of rogue-like. Considering this and the popularity of this genre, it really should come back in the next Smash. But I understand they want each game unique…

I remember the demo for this game that dropped right after the treehouse live that included Mega Man and Villager. My coworkers and I played it together every day during our lunch break until the full game came out.
Unfortunately there’s been a trend in the past year where many Smash 3DS cartridges have stopped working, it happened to me and countless other people online. Make sure to check your carts people!

The game came out October 3 in the States not September 13
I remember it so vividly as my brother and I went to GameStop the day after, he got the Smash 3DS by saving up all his money and we played in the car on the way home
That 3DS went on to be gifted to our friend a few years later when I upgraded to the New 3DS. This game was so special to us
I remember when the demo was breaking the community when people was trying to get the demo. And the variety demo at best buy was breaking the internet as well
Kinda shocking how it's now been longer since a new _"new"_ Megaman game than it was between Smash 4 and Megaman 11.
I thought with the framework they got with Megaman 11 they'd quickly get out another game, but alas... =/

My circle pad also disintegrated from how much I played this game haha, the plastic part is still there at least but the rubber cap is just gone
I never had a Wii U, but SSB4 was the game that I probably anticipated the most ever, so the 3DS version was a lifesaver and the one I associate with SSB4 as a whole. I spent so many hours on that game, it even broke my circle pad actually. It's a shame it's rarely brought up.

Retrospectively I find Smash 3DS to be my favorite Smash game. The stage list is mostly stages great for 1v1s or 4 player matches without any of the labyrinths the console games had. All of the side modes are great. Best Classic Mode (Ultimate's was more interesting at launch but it's less interesting to replay), longest All-Star Mode, Multi-Man and Home Run Contest are accounted for, and Smash Run is the best side mode the series has had. If it had Crazy Orders this would be the best singleplayer offering in a Smash game which is very fitting for a handheld console where you may be playing the game alone for the most part. The roster is still great even if Ultimate's makes it look small, and the gameplay itself isn't compromised in any way by being on a handheld.
Oh, i still remember it. It was my first Smash game. Still have it sitting on the shelf here.
I bought Smash 3DS shortly after it came out, and played it often until 2016. Surprisingly enough, it was for the longest time the game I played the most in my entire (21-year) life, until last year where I got back into my Pokémon Black 2 save. Still, 911 hours + 24 hours if I add my time from the demo (that only let you play for 24 hours), it is my second most played game.
I don't know how it compares to my first Smash game, Brawl, as I have lost the save I had on my Wii and the one I had on my Wii U, but I think I had at least a few hundred hours. I played the Wii U version for about 580 hours, and right now I am at 630 hours on Ultimate. We'll see how long it takes for the next Smash game to come out, but Ultimate might surpass my time on the 3DS version in a few years!
It will always be remembered as the game that forced the Ice Climbers off the roster, separated Zelda/Sheik, and stripped away everything except Charizard from Pokémon Trainer
Separating Zelda and Sheik was a good idea in the end as they finally got down B attacks finally.
I miss those days, way back in 2015. Playing the game for hours when it came out, waiting for DLC, taking my 3ds to school challenging friends to battles. Man, what a time...

@@Rosie_Cozy Smash Ultimate hardly has any replayable single player content in it which is why I find Smash 3DS to be more fun and replayable than Ultimate overall.
Smash Run definitely channeled the spirit of Melee's adventure mode, and I love it for that.
Well I’m not a fan of smash 4, I will say the 3DS version I definitely think is probably the most underrated, and I think it’s more interesting than the Wii U version

i'm still wishing for Pac-Maze & Smash Run to return, also the 3DS Classic Mode was so much better even with the missing Master Fortress
I was 12 when this game was first announced and my mom had to tell me to quiet down because of how loud I was screaming when Mega Man was reviled.
As a high schooler who would take the bus every week for marching band competitions, I played sooo much of this. No cap, this is my 2nd favorite Smash game.
I'll never forget picking this up in Japan a month ahead of NA, was such a good feeling. Then I remembered I was playing on a handheld....
Between the two smash 4 games, smash 3DS is the one I spent the most time and had the most fun with and I easily prefer it over the Wii U version. I also loved using my 3DS as a controller for the Wii U version!

I wanted a portable Smash game so bad as a kid. I even got Cartoon Network Punchtime Explosion on my 3DS, and wanted a Vita for Playstation Allstars (still waiting on a sequel)
Good times, I remember the hype for Mewtwo finally returning and being the first DLC character. I think an episode of u guys reacting to all the Smash trailers and making a tier list outta them would be dope

mines corrupted, probably from getting thousands and thousands of equipment from smash run and making link into a power house that was also faster than sonic.
Smash 3DS was the first Smash game I really got into as I grew with a DS and 3DS but not a Wii so I only experienced Brawl occasionally at friends' houses

Something I'll never forget about Smash 4 vs Ultimate is how in Ultimate's arenas 2 persons can't play on the same console while you could do that on Wii U. That alone kill the game for me.
I remember it was so fun to speculate about new characters back in Sm4sh's hype cycle.
With Ultimate, they became so effective at being secretive (Except for Simon and Terry) and the scope for possibilities had grown so big, that it became a bit boring because there was no real leads to go off of, so talking about anything felt a bit pointless.

My memories with 3DS can be traced back to playing the demo. I think that Mario was my first fighter I tried out.
When the full game released in October 2014, I was hooked to it. My main in both versions of Smash 4 is Pac-Man; I like his old-school aesthetics with his moveset. Pac-Maze is a great stage, although my favorite in 3DS is 3D Land.
3DS and Wii U are packed with modes. I can understand what you mean by Classic Mode being superior on 3DS, with the option to choose paths. The Master Core fights are intense yet fun. All-Star mode was cool, as you'd fight characters based on their release date. I prefer the Wii U version having the newest fighters first, but All-Star is a great mode in both editions of Smash 4.
That being said...my favorite mode by far is Smash Run. It is essentially my ideal campaign-type romp in Smash; you beat up on dozens of mooks from various Nintendo games, collect tons of power-ups, then use your enhanced fighter in a grand final battle. Initially, I was concerned about the random nature of each round, but that makes it so that no two Smash Runs are identical. That's not to overlook the issues, though: having the option to customize the time limit would have been nice, and an online feature would have ensured sone fun chaos. I would _love_ to see Smash Run HD on a console Smash; it would be so replayable!
I appreciate how Jon pointed out the museum aspect of Smash 4. Trophies were so fun to collect in both 3DS and Wii U; I dig the increased humor with the flavor text! Each fighter had two trophies on 3DS; the second one was based on an alternate skin.
While on the museum aspect, this game has fun extra modes. StreetSmash was a cute novelty, Target Blast and Trophy Rush are neat mini-distractions, Multi-Man Smash maintained the variety from past games, and Home-Run Contest was enhanced from Brawl. Lots of stuff to enjoy in SSB4!
Really, I can go on forever about both editions of Smash 4. I have a slight preference for the Wii U game, but 3DS is still great and deserves to be remembered. Both iterations of Smash 4 are my sixth favorite game.

Smash 3ds is my 3rd most played 3ds game. I remember walking to the mall and getting the game. I spent a long time un,ocking everything. Recently got back into it, love the game. Not really as nostalgic for the wiiu version. I was able to get the wiiu special edition too.

Smash Run was the best side mode in the series
Me and a friend played the demo so much waiting for the game to come out, even though you could only have 2 min matches, we ended up getting 14.5 hours of gameplay out of the demo alone, and most of that was playing as Mega man.
Playing smash portably was pretty Mind blowing at the time. Sadly for it, the portability of the switch eliminates any reason to return to it for any reason other than to briefly reminisce
Smash Run was a good mode wished they carried it over to Ultimate. Smash 3DS got more play from my friend group in high school.
Smash for 3DS was responsible for the circle pad of my first 3DS breaking. For the sake of my beloved handheld, and since there was a Wii U version, I sold my 3DS copy of Smash 4. Now I’m wondering if I made the right choice… Plus I got sick of grinding Smash Run.
The day a new Smash happens, it needs Smash Run.
"Wasn't compromised" Ice Climbers, Pokémon Trainer, and Zelda/Sheik Samus/Zero Suit Samus transformations had to be cut from both versions because they wouldn't work on 3DS.
had to dip out of this video after that comment about street fighter vs smash bros in game feel. the differences between super smash bros 4 and ultimate in raw gameplay are incidental and hardly applicable unless you pour hundreds of hours into competitive play. street fighter 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 may as well each be essentially completely different franchises (which is intentional)
Honestly, I put way more time into Smash 3DS than Wii U, I think it’s the better version of 4 when it comes to personality. Smash Run alone is an all-time great mode

I know this will sound ridiculous, maybe dumb, surprising and such. But, along Ultimate, SSB4 3DS is the best Smash game for me. It was so comfortable to play, though it may have killed so many circle pads, it felt better than playing with a control stick. Personally i had so much more fun playing it there, than playing it on Wii U, definitely the superior version though its counterpart got more content

This game was well forgotten… since the Wii U game is better than the 3DS game… which is understandable… but it sucks that not many people talk about the 3DS game!

Bring back smash run and add online, that was a fun lil feature that has some real potential, I miss the custom movesets and stats from Smash 4
What I’ll say about Smash 4 in comparison to Ultimate is that its hype cycle and release were far more exciting. While Ultimate is without question the game game mechanics-wise, Smash 4 had far more new stuff at launch (characters, stages, modes, etc.) whereas Ultimate mostly relied on returning content.
Smash 3DS is a great game but in hindsight I wish it never existed. Given all the compromises and the ways the content had to be split between the two versions, I think Smash 4 would be a much better and fully featured game if all of the development effort could’ve been focused on one title instead of two
No idea why they didn't bring smash run back. That thing would have been fantastic mode for ultimate
