    Cargo shorts are fine if they aren't baggy and hanging down lower than your knees. It's the fit that's important. The extra pockets are nice.

    At almost 62 ive been revamping my wardrobe. I try to minimize short term trend items and invest in high quality foundation items that dont go out of style (mainly higher end jeans and poplin fabric pants because I like comfort). I always hated sq toe and flip flops . Ive ditched all my white socks for black , grey etc. Next ill want to get into some ankle boots and casual/dress shoes and some solid color long sleeve shirts. I appreciate the channel and its content and look forward to finding not just some direction in fashion to add but some personal care items along the way.Thanks for the channel and I hope I can help support it along the way with some purchases from your sponsors.

    I'm old enough to have worn thongs, OP shorts, overthe calf white socks with stripes on top, and when there was barely enough inseam on shorts to measure them. With the help of your channel, I now get complements often about how stylish I look for a guy who's 51. Thanks for the help and direction.

    With you 100% on all these items! And this stuff doesn’t have to be expensive. I just got a(nother😬) pair of slim fit jeans & a pair of flat front chino shorts in Banana Republic (mainline, not Factory) in SF for…$38. Total. Oh and a pair of leather winter boots for $18! Regular price for those 3 items would have been over $350. Shop carefully and you can look great & not break the bank

    All spot on.
    Especially the flip-flops -those should be purely just on the beach,if at all.
    Flip-flops in the city is just all kinds of wrong.
    Imho, if you're over 40 and want to look good wearing casual, then Daniel Craig's Bond is a pretty good reference point.

Until someone comes up with something to carry all of my stuff, I will continue to enjoy cargo shorts with the multiple pocket options for my money, phone, car keys, contraband and whatever else I am carrying. Sometimes function trumps style and I can live with that.

    I've always done all of your casual footwear things. You even exposed my stealth practice of wearing driving shoes. A couple of things that need to go away forever: garish "trying too hard" socks (particularly when paired with cropped-length pants), dress suits with sneakers, and work or cowboy boots not being used for work or on a ranch, respectively. ...

    I certainly agree with you on most items except one--white socks. I am 77 and still wear white socks most of the time because colored socks make my feet sweat. I don't dress up very often, but when I do if it would look tacky with white socks I will wear colored ones. Otherwise it's white. Besides, at my age I really don't care that much what other people think about my attire!

    My biggest problem is in the footwear area. I have spent a lot of money on shoes and spent a lot of time trying to find dress shoes that are not painful. Square-toed shoes are less painful because they are actually shaped more like a foot. Plus, I wear dress shoes to a wedding or funeral once in a blue moon, so I've kept those old standbys. No-show socks fall into the shoes and don't last long but I guess they are cheap and disposable.

    I live in Long Beach, CA and guys wear such casual gear all the time, no matter the occasion. The uniform around here, especially by the beach, is the long cargo shorts, some kind of graphic surf tee, flip flops, and maybe top it off with a backwards ball cap. And these are grown ass men in their 40s. I get it, trying to pull off what you wore when you were younger, not that it looked any better back then, but trying to pull off what you thought was cool back in the day and showing you're still hip by keeping up with the latest (yet not so latest) trends. Hey, I was like that too until I looked at myself in the mirror one day and asked myself, "what the hell am I trying to go for here?" It didn't fit my age anymore and I looked like an old dude trying to dress like a kid. Now, it's not to say you have to look like your dad and go all dadwear but you can buy some more mature clothing and still look stylish. In fact, I like my look now as it makes me look more mature and put together. I still wear my graphic tees around the house or maybe hiking and exercising, but when I go out I like to look more put together with more basics. I always liked that my dad and grandpa dressed up whenever they were out. My dad would change just to go run an errand because they came from a time where that stuff mattered. I always wanted to be like that but laziness and a casual lifestyle made it too easy to not care. Until one time I told my coworker about my grandpa and wanting to dress up and she told me, "what's stopping you?" This girl right out of college made me question myself and she was right. There was nothing stopping me but myself. Since then I ditched all the outdated youth clothing I had and bought all new, more mature clothing. I look much better and it can still be youthful in how you pair things. You can still throw in your own style with certain items. I get more looks and scans from the women now, noticing my outfits, than I did before. I know my wife likes being seen with a more mature man than one wanting to look like a boy. I just don't get why men don't take more pride in their appearance. Most look sloppy and they're grown men, and they're fine with it. The attitude of not caring shows that you do care because you continue to choose to look like a 20 year old in your 40s. So, why not care enough to at least look mature. You trying to look like the "cool" dad doesn't necessarily make you cool. It makes you look outdated.

    @braddowdell88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Still called thongs here in Australia 🤣. I totally agree with your comment on women dressing nicely to go out and their partner not. It looks like they don't want to be there or can't be bothered to mature an effort. My town is really bad for this unfortunately.

    Yes I totally agree with all your suggestions 👍
    Cargo shorts aren't in these days, better avoided. Same goes for square boots. Rounded boots remain in vogue almost always. Baggy jeans also seem weird these days.
    Wearing an old style suggests 2 things to other prople, 1) its from one's closet, kept for sometime, not new, 2) it's a secondhand/pre-owned item. Not good either way, especially if it was bought new. Lovely video, superb suggestions 👍

    I'd add white minimalist sneakers. They look juvenile to me but most men's fashion channels recommend them all the time. I think they look bad even on guys in their 20's unless they're worn with shorts or a street style look. Doesn't help that I see teen girls wearing them all the time.

    I don’t usually comment on these kinds of videos - though I appreciate your take and the effort you put into doing the vids.
    Have to give you props on clarifying the whole “flip flops when you’re out to dinner” thing. I’m sick of people who say that guys over 40 should never wear flip flops - ever. I don’t get them at all with long pants. I’m east coast and it must be a Cali thing… but my entire goal is to wear flip flops and lacrosse shorts 10x the number of days that I have to wear anything that Martin Greenfield or Alden made for me.
    Speaking of Alden - have square toed shoes EVER been in fashion. Call me crazy but, if you’ve walked into my world wearing square toed shoes, we’ve never done business.
    Keep up the good work. I enjoy the videos.

    First time subscriber and thank goodness as a 66 year old I haven’t broke any rules of this video. I think if anything it’s better to slightly over dress as opposed to wearing baggy jeans. One tip I use. Find one good old fashioned mens clothing store and occasionally over pay for a shirt or something just to keep up with looking sharp.

  • @ronpruitt3832
    @ronpruitt3832 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can agree with this list. One of my biggest faux pas has to be the square toed shoes. I recently retired but I can’t believe how many of not only my former coworkers but even attorneys that I would see wearing them. You would think these people would know better. Now there were attorneys that dressed like they stepped out of a magazine. I saw something posted online that cracked me up. It showed some man’s legs and his trousers were old and pooling around the ankle. He had on unpolished square toed shoes. The caption said, “If your public defender shows up like this, you’re going to jail!” I can’t violate one of these rules. I have a narrow foot and I have never been able to wear flip flops. If I try, when I walk they fly off of my feet sometimes five feet out in front of me. I can’t keep them on and they are not adjustable for narrow feet. Besides, I don’t care for the look.

    100% agree with everything you said. Cargo shorts should be used while doing “honey do’s”, repairing cars, and lounging around. Don’t wear pajama bottoms out in public.

      My God! I'm not sure where you live, but where I am, this pajama-wearing in public has become epidemic. Individuals who do so should be sent to Fashion Re-education Camp.

    I'm in my 40's and finally stopped wearing cargo shorts. I bought some flat front chino shorts on a whim at the Hurley store ( I still shop at Hurley, Billabong, Volcom, Etc...) and there way more comfortable than cargo shorts.

    In my 50s I always wear cargo shorts for hiking (frequent activity of mine) and I can't see wearing anything else for that. The issue is my weekly Trader Joe's run is always after a hike so I'm always wearing cargo shorts at Trader Joe's. As most know, TJ's has quite good looking and put together clientele so I always feel sloppy when I go there. Oh well, function over form. I just won't be getting any numbers there. haha

    Being an EDC guy, there's zero chance that I'll ever give up the cargo shorts, and cargo, BDU, tactical pants. Plus putting anything in a back pocket throws out my back. I do own khakis with blind cargo pockets, but I never seen such shorts. Seriously what are you to do with all your stuff ? Knife, flashlight, keys, wallet, cellphone, ect. .

    I couldn’t agree more about the baggy jeans/cargo shorts. All I have to say to that is 1996 called; they want their pants back. I also agree with wearing white socks with everything. You probably could have added baggy basketball shorts to the list. I live in south FL and never wear flip flops for 2 reasons: 1. They aren’t fashionable/comfortable. 2. My feet are a few shades whiter than my legs from wearing sneakers all the time. I can’t really wear my swimsuits in public because they’re speedos. I have friends/coworkers who wear/do a few of these things and I would never say anything to hurt their feelings. I just keep the negative thoughts to myself because I sometimes do fashion no no’s too. Such as popping my polo collar and wearing my sneakers with no socks at all. Just can’t stand no show socks.
