Perhaps some context for those unaware. In September 2010 a large earthquake struck near Darfield in Canterbury, some distance away from Christchurch but close enough to be damaging. At the time we thought it was horrible, but it wasn't really too bad, more of a clean up than a cataclysm and things were getting back to normal within a couple of months really (that is, the aftershocks were slowing down). We didn't know that was just the warm-up act.
In February 2011 an earthquake struck in a particularly unfortunate location in the Christchurch port hills that due to geology sort of resonated focusing a serious amount of shaking in Christchurch and a lot of buildings either fell down, were subsumed by liquefaction and ground displacement, or were so badly damaged that they were too dangerous to enter, a hundred something people died. The aftershock chain was vigorous and took a long, long time to calm down (years practically speaking).
After the earthquake large areas of the city (mostly residential) were written off (red zoned), the government effectively bought the properties and demolished them, the land being deemed unsuitable to build on again for the forseeable future.
Nearly 10 years later, recovery from this event is still going on, it turns out rebuilding a city takes a long time and costs a lot of money.

James Sleeman. Thanks for the context. 185 people died. Majority Kiwis, but Japan over represented. I don't think ChCh will return totally to normal..... in my lifetime anyway.

I lived in Christchurch at the time. it just kept going.. there were continuous (although much smaller) aftershocks for over a year following the main quakes... you could hear them coming.. and at night laying in bed the sound always woke me up

It is highly likely that the black Austin Princess is actually a Princess "R", a model released by NZ Motor Corp (the NZ BL importers/assemblers) to commemorate the end of Austin assembly in New Zealand. They were only available in black, and had an "R" badge on the upper right side of the boot lid. From memory, black was never used on general production Princess's during their NZ assembly run.

My father spoke to prince charles once in south yorkshire and he said "any jobs down your end charlie" and charles said "just a few, just a few" lol.
Once me & my friend stood under a small tree sheltering from the rain & thunder in the mid 80's and all of a sudden the lightning struck the tree must have been a few feet away from us and both of us automatically dived to either side and got away with it unscathed.
    Seemed like an explosion.

Trolleys are normally trolleys in NZ, it's just a few weirdo places that call them trundlers. It's probably some ozzie thing because of our oz supermarkets.

Just noticed this post. They are trolleys in my part of Oz. Hubnut video is first I've heard of trundlers.

Great video Ian. Love seeing the classic Japanese cars, and a thunderstorm thrown in. What’s not to like ?👍

Aggghhhhh. Love your channel dear chap......BUT anything with the initials 'BMW' makes me think just how sliding down a 50ft razor blade, using your gonads as brakes, is oh so much more exciting!

I can confirm the KE70 Corolla SR Coupe was available in the UK as I owned an 83 Y reg back in 1986 but it was a rare thing to see and only ever saw a handful of them

Nice one! Sometimes the land scape looks re-markedly like Northumberland .

I am a BMW fan and I wasn't crying in my conrflakes, I loved that creation! 😁 And I never ever eat cornflakes. Because LCHF rules.

That LD28 went into almost everything that was rear wheel drive in New Zealand. I used to drive a Land Rover with one for field trips at work. There were even quite a few in Jaguars and Damilers. Diesel used to be very very cheap in New Zealand so a Jag with an LD28 was cheaper to run than almost any petrol car.

Yes, finally a Fuego road test! Indeed HubNut must have one. Not a turbo though, you should go for the lowly TL with the 1.4l engine.

I use to own a 2001 530i BMW with a stock 3L petrol motor. Nice car to drive.
