I know it's a puppet but I can't help forgetting it's a puppet. Looks like a proper assistant helping to demonstrate. I LOVE THIS!

Very helpful! Thanks for making this!
Very good video. I just got a Kermit puppet and he came with arm rods. I wasn't exactly sure how they work. I will be watching this video for practice!
That sounds great Matthew! And for performing Kermit good rod technique will help you a lot in simulating the character as Kermit swings and throws his hands about in a very specific way. Good luck practicing!
I just bought my 1st puppet at a thrift store . Always wanted one . I need arm Rods. I’m gonna make some tomorrow.
Thank you. Very helpful.
I'm looking to purchase a puppet as a 1st timer...should my dominant hand operate the mouth or the rods? I'm left handed but play my musical instruments right hamded so maybe it doesn't matter as much for me
If you are ambidextrous, please try moving the puppets mouth with either hands a few time and settle on whichever hand feels most comfortable. As ambidextrous puppeteers are few, you'd be very valuable if you practice with both hands intermittently. :) This way you will be able to accompany a right-handed puppeteer with your left hand in constricted spaces etc.
@@puppetarians Sadly I'm not ambidextrous, just living in a right handed world and that's how I learned the music. It probably gives me an advantage to practice both ways with a puppet so I will definitely keep that in mind thank you .Can I ask another...if I create a short skit video by myself is it best to do like a lavalier mic or do a voice over in post production?
@@Chaotic_Enigma Recording your voice simultaneously as you perform the puppet is always the best option in my opinion. So having a mic on you while shooting will be great. You can also always choose to re-dub if you want to correct some words/lines. But only if very necessary.
What a lovely video! So much valuable information so well explained! Thank You!

Thanks for writing. For practice puppets we make arm rods with a variety of stuff from wooden skewers to strong clothes' hangers. For professional puppets you can visit a hardware store and get thin strong rods cut to your liking and use them.

Anybody else here from IB theatre? This is Majorly helpful for learning Wayang Golek theatre.
Thanks for the comment. We've often wondered if the muppet style hand rods were originally inspired by the Wayang Golek. Anyway, happy to know that this video is helpful with your practice too! Wish you the best! ❤ Do subscribe to the channel and share this video with your friends and family too.
Check out some of Randy Feltface. When he only uses one hand he likes to kinda hang the other hand on the cover in front him him giving it the illusion that it's at rest.
Such a great mention @anthemlog ❤ Heath McIvor's (Randy's puppeteer) armrod work is spectacular!!
Very nice video thank you for sharing I am blind and wanted to know when you are holding both rods in one hand do you have the rods between any other fingers? And what is the best way to attach the rods to the puppets arms or hands? Thank you! :-) I just bought a puppet! :-)
Thanks Daniel. You hold both the rods in your fist in a way that your index finger rests on one rod and your thumb rests on the other rod. Now to move the rods you need to either slide your index finger and thumb in between the rods and force the rods out or keep them on the outer side of the rods to swiftly guide them into making different gestures.
For how to attach the hand rods you can visit this tutorial th-cam.com/video/Q9kgniqH6iE/w-d-xo.html it provides a very simple way to add rods to puppet hands especially when you are beginning to learn and practice.
Okay thank you I just didn't know if I had to have the rods between some fingers and then controls with index and thumb while holding the Muppet with your hand inside with your other arm. Thank you so much for the reply great video! :-) I also have a question about the arm rods are they supposed to be under the puppets hands wrist on the top or on the bottom of their arms hands or wrists? Sorry if it's confusing. If I am sitting down and I have my puppet to the right of me sitting down as well with my right arm controlling the mouth and head and my left arm controlling its arm rods are there arm Rod supposed to be outside or inside of his arms? Or just under his wrist? Thank you so much for your time and answering these questions. I love your videos and subscribed!
@@daniellopezeverest The arm rods are inserted and glued inside the arms, opening the stich seam a little, just below the puppet's wrist. This way they really stick well and won't come out even if you move the arms vigorously.
Delightful! Thank you for the informative video!

These days you will find a lot of Kathputlis in various local handicraft markets, for example Dilli Haat in Delhi.

Hi @Barbie Stories, thanks for your query. We'll soon make a video on talking puppet mouth manipulation techniques. As for managing two puppets by one puppeteer at the same time. We don't do that. We always focus on performing one puppet by one puppeteer at a time. So Tara is played by Sangya and Appa is played by Hashim. Much love!

It is necessary to synchronize the words spoken with the hand movements with the right timing. I think that's the hardest part. It's a job that takes a lot of practice. But I guess that the more experience we get, the more likes we get.
That's right. Lip-sync with the puppet is a very specific technique that helps tremendously in making the puppet appear alive. We'd surely make a video on that too. Meanwhile here's our full puppet making playlist especially for you th-cam.com/play/PLUuKq4ozqBND_0kWMmQDd1xoK5j70EvdO.html
