Slings vs the world

sling practice
When I'm not out smashing fruit or armor, most of my slinging days are spent in places like this; practicing my form and occasionally teaching others the art. In this case, my lovely girlfriend Miss J

kevlar sling vs roman shield (scutum) part 2 of 2: shield test
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
In this second video we get to test the strength of the shield we just built against sling and stone. The sling is 20 inches from the finger loop to the pouch and the stones are between 3 to 5 oz in weight. Footage was shot over the course of two days and distance varied between 10 to 15 meters. Enjoy
kevlar sling vs roman shield (scutum) part 1 of 2: building the shield
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
This first video shows how I build a Roman style Scutum. It's made from two sheets of mahogany plywood glued together and curved to a depth of about 11in. It's faced with a layer of 100% linen fabric and is about 6-7mm thick 48in tall and 25in wide. Before curving, the sheets were 36in wide. A third sheet of the same plywood was cut into 1 1/2in wide strips for the framework on the back and als...

Slinging at some tough fruit to see what damage it can do. Hits were kinda sloppy so I might have to redo
sling vs watermelon (25 meters)

Round two slinging at a watermelon from 80 feet away with my homemade (balearic style) sling. Took me like a million throws but its a good challenge for me. Also I did edit out at least 30 other misses and kept the cool ones for the video

slinging with my homemade 550 paracord balearic style sling at a target 80 feet away. Only got two hits out of like 50 shots but definitely some good practice music in this video song: Folkvangr artist: Danheim

Slinging with a 550 paracord Balearic style sling. Only two hits but good practice
Do you remember what was the distance you meant for this shoot?
Muy buen trabajo, ahí va mi like
How thin was that plywood you used if you don’t mind me asking
Great consistency. Love your videos, always a good watch.
@@IronGoober hey thanks Goober I’m hoping to get more stuff out soon I feel like I haven’t been very active lately
incredible accuracy
What are you shooting, baseballs?
@@ComicsOdyssey those are lacrosse balls
Lol, what was the watermelon thinking? He had no chance. Should have just walked away
Little Bear.
It's not just power, but accuracy... That's deadly
This guy is awesome
Dude perfect bts
Now imagine a scattered group of say 50 slingers hiding in tall grass. Your line of hoplites or warriors sees nothing but the occasional head popping up and down, along with the occasional whirling arm. A series of high frequency cracks echoes across the battlefield and suddenly two of your friends are down with rocks embedded in their heads and legs. That would be a very bad day.
Hoplites more often wore linen armour, I wonder what that would do
In general, most people nowadays cant really imagine how crazy that would be. Even worse, imagine invading mountainous terrain, you hear a distant crack echoing through them mountains-someone slung a rock, you dont know who or where, all you know is that they did it. You now have to wait for the rock to hit you with so much force that it would easily kill you. The time period between the sound of the sonic crack and the impact of the stone have to be the most terrifying thing ever. Antiquity was metal.
Still used in rioting
That’s some crazy force. Excellent shots!
rip watermelon you will be missed
I have a question what is those white thing you used to make the side of the shield ( 2:06 ). Great video !
@@Capitaine-Rex thank you and those are rawhide dog treats. Just soak them in water until they’re soft enough to work with and they stiffen up again when dry
@@slingsvstheworld2866 thanks you i have a last question what is the scale of the shield ?
@@Capitaine-Rex the sheets of wood used are 48in tall by 36in wide
@@slingsvstheworld2866 okay thank’s you

Dam, no wonder Goliath got one shotted
This a paracord sling? The cracking sound is very satisfying.
Ok, I'm writing this comment before I watch the video. My money is on the swing.
I knew it!
Excellent work on the shield, the originals were made in small strips about 1 inch wide, I suspect this made the shield much stronger than modern-day ply wood. Having made Roman shields [Scuta] I found a thin layer of leather over the linen makes all the difference, slows penitration of arrows, stops sling shots. I have no doubt the Romans were well aware of all of this. Great work.
I sling like a pitcher throws a baseball. Much faster slinging.
I've got a lot of respect for this guy. Seeing how hard it is also really makes me appreciate the David vs Goliath story more.
Then again in those days... NOTHING to do, watch sheep and otherwise do NOTHING, no music, no phones, no distractions and just a bunch of rocks laying around to play around with while watching sheep... One could see how a person could get extremely accurate during those conditions. Just got into slinging (and currently have a sore shoulder because it's fun as shit) and it's very addicting. I do/did (am older so don't practice the same way anymore) a different but in a way similar hobby that takes a LOT of practice (basics simple but endlessly complicated if you want to. Don't want to out the hobby though as I'd likely out myself along with it) that I also got addicted to; guess just that personality type. Was likely among the world's absolute best for a period of ten years or so; big enough community that practices hard so it's not THAT easy to accomplish. Best compliment I ever received for it was from a different practicioner, doing something related but not exactly the same, watching me during practice and coming up and just randomly opening with "you must be from a very shitty little town with absolutely zero stuff to do right?". I, somewhat confused, go "yeah how'd ya know?" and he goes "you don't get as good as that if you've got better things to do; I myself am also from a shitty little town with nothing to do". Idk... May sound like a direct insult to just shit on my hometown but that was beautiful to me ("real recognize real") and don't think I'll ever forget it. Sheer boredom = random skills. David lived and breathed boredom for sure. 😛
@@SicketMog Bahahahaha!!!!! 🤣 That small town cred is so relatable man!
This is brilliant and just the video I was looking for. Great video, you seem like a natural at this. As I am copying your tire method can I ask about it: 1 - What diameter were the tires and does it matter too much? how did you know what the curve circumeference should be? 2 - How long do you leave to cure when wrapped down? 3 - Does the type of glue matter? 4 - How long to wet the wood for? 5 - What sort of paint matters and can you use canvas instead of linen? Hope these aren't too many questions for you, but thanks in advance!
Thank you and no problem at all 1 - I don’t know the diameter of the tires because they’re my brothers, but they are made for a Miata if that helps. To be honest it didn’t mater much to me. In the video I learned from, the guy used some sort of large drum which I would’ve preferred to use because the tires flex as you tighten the straps. Might be hard to see but the shield was a slightly misshapen because of it 2 - I left it a week because I went out of town but that’s a bit longer than needed, just check it after 2 days and make sure it’s totally dry
3 - I think any decent wood glue should work. I like titebond 2 and Elmer’s wood glue max
4 - I hosed it down for about 2 min on each side to get it completely soaked 5 - I never got a chance to paint it so I don’t know but you can definitely use canvas because the instructions I followed called for either canvas or linen
@@slingsvstheworld2866 Wow! Thanks for all the help. I need this because this is a project that's not easy. I'm trying to source myself a barrel because my tyres are too small.
@@XxKINGatLIFExX I believe in you man I made lots of mistakes with my first one and only got it right the second time. For the boss I do recommend something stronger than the small screws I used because it popped off of the shield after taking its first hit with a rock th-cam.com/video/TOBAHeB2iWM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=y0am7y_qgMmFgVGb This is the video I followed
How many people just went to where the histogram indicated the most replays?????😂
Hell no, ruins the drama
it says 20g mild steel which makes it 0.9mm thick. that is thin most I think is at least 3mm. i have checked again 1 is the thickness of the sides but some were just 1mm thick this is for the front chest plate
Imagine slinging lead shot the size of a golf ball or orange?
If you watch the whip end as he slings you can she the condensation from the sonic boom
And that is why, boys and girls, plate armor would stop ANYTHING that is not a gunpowder weapon. No matter what books, games and movies tell you nothing wielded by human hands can penetrate plate armor. Even the spike on the back of a warhammer or poleaxe. Even against crossbows they would most likely not penetrate. Man in full plate armor only died when someone would get to the seams or from an unlucky strike they would hit somewhere not protected by plate.
mace
except thz bec de corbin and all war picks designed to do exactly that...
He is assuming all armor is properly tempered and thick enough
war pick, maul, poleaxe
U don't need to penetrate the armor, A few good concussion strike can incapacitate a heavily armored person.
oww my shoulder hurts just from watching that.
4:30. Ooff! Wow!
In his "Anabasis," Xenophon destribes how the slingers (slingsmen?) would get in line like archers for mass volleys. This is why!
must have been terrifying to see, with lots of cracks going around 😬
Is there any company that sells these Kevlar slings? Anytime I search for it I get rifle slings
Just got my Kevlar sling from Acroballistics. Its incredible. Beautifully made, and his videos show you the reasons for his designs. Very well thought out. They come from Greece. I just ordered three more in differing lengths. I'm hooked.
@@saladdays180s9 thank you, ill check it out
Well, that stone shot to the neck would have been fatal. Everything else would've been survivable. Looks like the lead bullets didn't do much more damage than the stones, but I imagine they would have done more damage than the stones versus bare flesh. Really interesting to see these hits versus light armor.
Lead bullets are easier to use because they have a standardized weight and size. Plus, you can have them printed with things like "catch", and "ouch!".
@@The_Practical_Daydreamerthey fly better because of density
The goal was to simply debilitate, which is all the armor shots need to do, present blunt force impact to the chest. Even with that armor you're going to get knocked down sooner or later. the Spanish report it would bust internal organs even with their steel breastplates. Had enough force to kill a horse outright and were only marginally less powerful than their gunpowder weapons.
Medieval weapons are obviously never going to stand up against their modern counterparts (lethal or non lethal) but when looked at in an historical context, slings must have been an amazingly useful weapon. Cheap, easy to equip and carry. Then when you consider it might have taken this guy a few days to dial in the accuracy and power then compare that to soldiers who spent YEARS training and using this weapon it shouldn't be hard to appreciate the sling and its impact on the battlefields of the ancient past. Nice demonstration thank you.
also, in war you have to be able to get the wide side of a barn...you don't need accuracy
A lot of comments on here recently. It appears the sensationalism surrounding the sling on TH-cam has brought in an influx of social media trendies.
