One of the most proffessional singers in opera history, fantastic technique, charismatic and easy to listen to.

The first time I ever heard Ludwig was on the Callas/Corelli Norma. I almost fell out of my chair. Such a beautiful voice! She has the mezzo sound, but could get up into soprano territory. Her Liebestod is wonderful. Actually, just about everything she sang was wonderful.

This is one of Christa Ludwig's best recordings, possibly one of the best recordings of a lied by Strauss ever.
The sumptuous and dark voice, rising effortlessly and without any discernible change of colour into an exciting, rich and ringing top range, the musicality, the diction, the taste, the firm and homogeneous vocal lines, and the absolute controll of a marvellous instrument make her unique.
It is like a crystallization of all parameters on the highest possible level.
    R.I.P., Christa!

Does anyone notice that Mr. Moore has to play the "wenn du es wuesstet" at 1:11 along with her. It's not in the music like that. Albeit gorgeous voice!

he noticed that she wasn't breathing and will be missing her entrance - and IMMEDIATELY helped her out. That is prime, prime, top-tier accompanying.

Actually, a "collaborative artist" could have his own show today if he wanted-on public access cable in the US. Ludwig is great here, awesome in fact, but I'm not so sure about Moore. It is a hard song to accompany, to give it sweep and passion and yet not drown out the singer.

They are both great artists, but I think that they are fighting the entire time over the tempo and rubati. She wants to stretch, whereas he wants to keep things relatively square. If my memory serves me correctly, she writes in her autobiography about how she and he were on different wavelengths musically. I think she and Werba were much more in sync.

@LibbySingsMezzo I agree: I've never found her anything less than terrifically exciting. And I wish that "almost falling out of one's chair" could be a category adopted by music critics; it's certainly one in forming my pantheon of favorite singers. :)

If you like Beethoven as I do, you could try the Oratorio "Christ on the Mount of Olives" Op 85. It is like Fidelio, very easy to lisen to. Try Don Giovanni by Mozart also, although this is not all "go go go" like Fidelio.

Yes she does (sound like a soprano). This is one of the first records I ever got. Fidelio is such an easy opera to listen to and keeps your attention all the time.
