  • A short film on how i go about taking photographs of birds in my garden. I talk about feeding birds, using the fabulous Benbo Trekker as a perch support, setting up a feeding station, use of perches and how to knock up a quick hide to aid concealment.

    Lovely video and a very personal touch with patient instruction for beginners. I get a mass amounts of birds where I live but they are hard to photograph! I ordered a hide that is used for hunting...very cool like a pop up tent....plus the fabric draping, comes this week. That way I can go out in rain and snow also. I really like the perch you used...I will be setting those up also. I literally walk out back and start shooting the resident Bald Eagles, gulls, even grey heron fly past...Osprey and all the little land birds. I live on a private island so the bird population is the highest in our state for its size. I just need to get hidden as they are pretty elusive. With an open water view, its very cool to see all I could photograph. The whales were fun but hoping to get the larger zoom I need by months end, That will put my photos where I want them. My gear is the issue without a great zoom lens, My 70mm to 300mm is not far enough.

    Hi Simon. Just discovered your channel and love it because at last I can learn from a vlogging wildlife photographer who uses the same type of kit as myself - a crop sensor camera (mine is a Sony A77ii) and a 150-600 zoom (Tamron G02). None of your re-mortgage needing f4/600mm stuff stuck on the front of £4k's worth of full frame body !!! Keep up the good work; I'm looking forward to more.

      Thanks Alasdair, yeh the gear ive got didnt break the bank but if you use it correctly and use good fieldcraft you can get some great images. I'd love to try a big F4 at some point but for now we'll stick to my "old faithful" Sigma. All the best

    Super job Simon...Im moving into a new house in the next few months so I will be getting the feeders up asap to see what we got coming in. I want to change what I do in my current garden as I get a lot of birds in all round the feeders, but its difficult to isolate 'the' shot as I haven't been making the perch from cut branches as you describe. So when we go, Im going to. My question is though, should I keep my photo area separate from my general feeding area? The reason I ask is that I will have 3 separate areas - an orchard, small but surrounded by trees with brambles etc, the nice garden area in front of the house where we can watch the birds from the house too, and then a small wooded area behind on a slope..so Ive got loads of options. Im thinking the orchard area, which is across the lane, to be set like your hide area, with various perches, but smaller obviously, where I can set up perches and change them accordingly. Then in the garden, a nicer looking feeder set up but not for photos necessarily. Then behind in the wood, perhaps a hide for possible fox and deer? Im waffling now as Im so excited! 53 years old and you've got me like a small child with all my Xmases rolled into one! Cheers

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like youre going to be a busy man Jeremy!! Lucky man eh having so many options. Firstly I'd be weighing up the position of the rising and setting sun, looking at cover, where shadows are likely to be cast and other similar considerations and then moving the feeders accordingly. I'd probably limit my photo areas to one area in particular otherwise you can end up having the birds too spread out. You need to try and isolate them to one area really . Hope this helps👍🏼📷
