Backyard Bird Photography in January

  • Because of the positive response I got from my previous backyard video, Backyard Bird Photography in December, I decided to make it a monthly occurrence. This video is for the month of January and as is fitting, it actually snowed one of the days I was shooting for this! I once again used my tragopan photo blind so sit in the backyard and I also used an area on the front porch to take advantage of some new perches in the front yard. I had made some improvements to the perches and the feeders since the original video. The result was great, allowing me so see a much greater variety of species than I originally did.

Good going, Todd. You're picking up more experience every day. We have found that the birds here will feed actively for ten to 15 minutes and then disappear. They are gone 15 to 20 minutes and then they come back and feed again. This cycle goes on most of the day. When I want bluejays I put out some peanuts in the morning. Sometimes a handful of peanuts in the shell and sometimes shelled peanuts. Nothing gets bluejays like peanuts. They load up as many as they can carry and take them someplace to hide them and then come back for more until they are all gone. Only problem is the squirrels like peanuts, too. The birds will come to the place where you want them to be when you get the needed experience in how to place your perches in relation to your feed. Then you will begin set up types of perches in locations for greatest artistic presentation for the season. It doesn't happen overnight. Oh yeah, I went to the fabric shop and bout a few yards of camouflage pattern mosquito netting to hang over the windows of my blind. I cut a slot for the lens. I can see the birds through the netting around the camera but the birds can't see me inside the dark blind.

Have you ever photographed a hawk near your feeders. I went out two days ago and found a large pile of blue jay feathers. I wish I could have seen that encounter. I naught an old 35 mm alt. Going to try bird photography. I really enjoy your videos

I do have a coopers hawk that occasionally comes around and hunts in the yard. I have seen it hunt mourning doves and juncos successfully in the yard under the feeders. I actually just saw it this morning hunting but it didn't catch anything. I am hoping that one of these days when I am out there it will come by. Good luck on the bird photography it is addicting!

Great set up Todd! Looks like the birds are enjoying your yard. Congrats on capturing a bunch of great images and video, I enjoyed watching. Do you like the blind you’re using? I’m going to get one and am looking for recommendations. Loved the low down junco clip

Thanks for watching! I do really like the tragopan blind. It is very versatile and they have different attachments that you can get as well that make it even better. I have left mine out in all sorts of weather and it has held up great!
