For example, I don't see any problem with Velvet, it's kind of a wonder that she wasn't who she is for the entire game. Going through what she has, no could blame her if she was cold the entire time. When she finally does start warming up, it feels more earned. If she'd started any sooner than she did, it would have felt forced and made the character's development feel rushed and unnatural. I also have to disagree about how apart the world is. To me, Tales of the Abyss is the best game in the series. I know a lot say Symphonia, however. The Xillia duo was great as well. Zesteria was solid, but felt the combat was more challenging than Xillia 2, the platforming was much better. If this is somewhere in the same range of quality as the games I mentioned above, then it will be worth the time and money.
I watch EZA reviews for games I couldn't care less about just to hear Brandon's voice. It's a nostalgia thing, I've been listening to him talk about video games for almost a decade now.
Huh, so the main cast are anti-villains? That's an interesting concept that not many games touch on. Playing the bad guys, in a sense. And so far, it does look like it improved on the Zesteria game, which I would say is pretty good.
I don't find Velvet boring in the slightest, if anything, I think she's one of the best written characters in the entire Tales series. Her stark contrast between the prologue and the rest of the game kinda makes a lot of sense from a psychological point of view when you think about the kind of mental trauma she dealt with. SPOILERS for the beginning of the game. . . . . She basically suffered a Berserk styled eclipse, witnessing her brother die before her eyes, killed by the man who was like her father figure and tutor. During this she was turned into a daemon and imprisoned for 3 years with nothing to feed on but blood from other daemons. Imagine going from a normal 16 year-old girl to THAT. The whole rest of the game is basically about her slowly regaining her humanity through interactions with the people she meets along her road to revenge.
OMG it’s my GT Reviews voice over!…. I wondered what happened to this reviewer. I used to use GameTrailers for all my new game reviews back in the 20 00’s instant sub for nostalgia alone.
I just picked up this game a week ago, with my only previous Tales experience being Zestiria...which started off great but by the halfway point I was forcing myself to finish lol! Berseria is an incredible JRPG and I'm so glad I gave it a shot, it redeems Zestiria in almost every way :)
I agree with alot minus velvet, you see her start developing the mroe she spends with laphi, its just minor and not in your face. if you pay attention you can see her change, shes becoming more patient, less demanding and more willing to side treck and help others. rather than at the begining she didnt even care what the state of the world is, all she cared about was to kill her goal. Also, fair advice: if your gonna give it a 4/5 stars you might wanna sell that its an actually good game, you keep pointing out things you didnt like rather than the good things you did.
Saying Velvet is boring shows that you didn't quite understand hwe character. She is incredibly interesting as a character and is up there with Lloyd, Yuri, and Luke with the best protagonists in Tales history. To call her character development uneven is to miss the subtleties in it. She doesnt have a lot of overt character shifts, they are very subtle and she grows gradually throughout the entire game.
I don't think I agree with you on Velvet's lack of character progression before THAT POINT in the game. It's subtle, but she actually does soften up a bit around the others even before her character progression gets into full swing, it's just very subtle and downplayed.
i'm playing through the game for the first time currently, and i have to agree. its extremely subtle and i'm not surprised people missed it, but there were several points, not even major story beats, where you can see slight changes to her character pop up. sometimes not even actual dialog, but just her character art in a random scene having her expression be more neutral or happy looking then the normal basic "scowl" she has at all times in the beginning. there was a point, i wanna say maybe 25% - 30% into the game where i picked up on one of the subtle changes and started really paying attention to everything she says, and how she visually expresses in every convo, and i'm actually surprised how much detail there is to her character that goes missed. i was told by just about everyone i know that i'd need to look past her bland character going in, but i'm starting to think that most people just miss some of this stuff.
Sounds great if you are a fan of Jrpg! Gonna pick this up since $45 USD for pre-order seems like a good price point and will support more jrpg coming to PC.
This is the first time I have seen a review from you guys that has me scratching my head. The final score didn't seem to reflect well with what was said in the review. It certainly didn't come across as an excellent game.

Tales of berseria is actually a complete game on launch while FFxv was a complete mess and the mediocre plot didnt help either
Disagree strongly with what they said about Velvet being one dimensional, she might have become colder and more desensitized with other people, BUT we see various times through the story with her relationships with the party characters (especially with laphicet) and even with other characters in the game (like Kamoana), that the kind loving girl she used to be is still there (just burried under all her hate). Also out of all the characters in the game Velvet is the one that goes through the most character development (only rivaled by Laphicet), and unlike what they say in the video its not something that just happens out of nowhere, as i said earlier its something that happens through the entire game with her relations with the other characters, and all of that keeps building up until it culminates later in yet another big change to her persona, (its just a shame that whoever wrote the review didnt notice those constant yet very subtle developments of her through the game). Also if by uneven character development they mean that her change at the beggining isnt warranted then again... i disagree, when you take into account what happened to her, how much she LOVED the thing that was taken away from her, what happenes afterwards and for how long it happens, and then you add the lore of the world and how malevolence works, all of a sudden her drastic change is more than completely justified. I do agree with the score though, a 4 out of 5 or 8 out of 10 is what i would rate it as well.
Its isn’t that the change isn’t believable it’s that the story pacing could have been done better. I would have wanted a couple more hours in velvets village spending more time with laphicet and artorias and getting some more time in the asylum would have made the change feel more fluid. The change in player time is way too fast. And the development afterward is just too slow. Some people say this is subtlety, but I have to disagree. It barely felt present at all.
apparently each character had a different designer, someday Tales of designs will stop being tacky... someday. I like the designs individually, but when paired with the style of the environments and put together with the other party members, it comes off very bizarre.
ResonantPilot that's subjective though. I find they look fine together. Lots of anime style games and shows have characters with wildly different styles of outfits to make them all the more unique. I think a lot of people like the crazy outfits. Are you a fan of the tales series yourself? Just curious what perspective you're coming from.
Damn, was really hoping they'd keep the combat style that Xillia had. It's the closest the games got to actually making me care about playing the other characters with how great the character upgrade system was and attention to different play styles. Seeing them simplify the combat is the worst thing they could have done from my perspective.
A tad late (about 9 months), but looking back on this game, I really enjoyed my time with it. This was my first Tales game that I beat and I actually think it sits up there with Persona 4/5 and NieR:Automata as some of the best games I've played. The story was incredible and I'm still in awe of Velvet as a character and how she developed throughout the game. I'm so mad that this game has unfortunately been pushed aside for other games this year, but with Persona 5 and NieR:Automata, I can kind of see why. Great review!
I know I'm late but I just beat this game recently and it has become one of my favorite JRPGs. Sounds crazy, but not many games' characters have left such impacts on me.
Love Easy Allies but it feels like some of these Japanese games are being graded on an easier curve. A lot of these types of flaws would get blasted on western titles.
not to be mean or anything in terms of the upcoming Resident Evil 7 Biohazard review Easy Allies, i have to ask, how long does it usually take for you guys to create an entire video game review and does it take longer for some games such as RE 7 if it involves VR in any way or what?
i'm well aware of them getting their review copy late. i'm definitely looking forward to the review real soon. i can wait on the game until around next week if i still have any interest in it by than but that might still be debatable due to the game currently having a love/hate thing going on with various people so it's hard for me to decide if i want it or not, that's why i ended up getting Yakuza 0 first.
Not if you're on PC though. It's got Denuvo. Not worth supporting crap like that. You know, if you care about actually owning your game at all that is.
I found the coment about Velvet character development superfluous, after all you're talking about a women who's brother was killed and was a prisioner for 3 year which means trauma... Have you ever saw someone with Post-traumatic stress disorder?
Hmmm, the review seems to be telling me it's just a step-up from the backlash of Zesteria. Get it full price or wait for sale? Good job on the review, Damiani!
The predecessor doesn't have much to do with this review. I haven't played Zestiria (just watched the cutscenes) but after playing Berseria it is my new favorite Tales game, and jrpg in general. My old favorite Tales was Vesperia.
This was a cool review I am a huge fan of Tales games so I am finally able to play this one which is the PS4 version, if anything I am hoping you would still be able to walk around for all the characters who join you party! with RPG games like this I love to take my time and enjoy the experience of the game itself with training my characters, learning their skills and abilities for battle followed by enjoying the story and side quests.
This was the first Tales game since Vesperia that fully engrossed me in its world. What an awesome fucking game. So glad the series isnt dead yet. How do you figure the character progression was "bloated"? Comments like that scare me, because if devs catch wind of them, I imagine next game there will be no customization or progression at all.
Yay! I can finally watch the review now I've finished Berseria! I enjoyed this game so much, and disagree with the review in regards to Velvet's development.
I have just one question. As someone who loved Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia, but hated Graces f, Xillia, Xillia 2 and Zestiria, does this game have anything for me?
Just give us Vesperia 2 or something ;_; To me Vesperia is still to this date far more superior to every other title that has come after it.. It's such a great game!!
Can I jump into the series with this game or does this tie in with the previous games? Also how is the story? If there are any JRPG enthusiasts out there, whats a good game to pick up that came out within the last few years? I used to be a huge JRPG fan but haven't played any since FF13 aside from FF15. Anything pre-FF13 (aside from the tales series of course) I've most likely played through.
You can jump right into this one, you won't miss anything from the main plot, thought it has some references from other games that hopefully will make you more interested in the series overall, I recommend it, this series always had great characters and art, unfortunaly I won´t be able to get it util later this year :(
Personally I was surprised by the amount of stars given after listening to the full review. Definitely sounded like it should have received a lower score.
Great review, I was really on the fence about this game because I love the series but seeing them re use the Zestiria engine again made me think it'd just be more of the same, I love Zestiria but it was getting stale, after watching this review though I'll probably pick up Berseria.
I'm into JRPGs, but I've never cared much for the Tales games. Even Symphonia, whose story and characters were very by-the-numbers even back in 2003. Maybe it's the anime aesthetic, but maybe I'll give it another chance when this game goes on sale.
First Tales Of game I'm genuinely interested in. As much as I liked Xilia, it and many other recent Tales Of games felt very formulaic it was getting stale by just looking at the cast. This doesn't seem to be the case (though I'm sure at least some of the story formula will still be there, if they get rid of it entirely they risk losing long-time fans and the series' identity). Will probably pick it up a few months down the road. Not because I'm waiting for the prices to go down, there's just other games I'm more interested in.
Nice review! Though, I do disagree that the battle system is struggling to find its identity. As someone who has played every single Tales game to date (including the Japanese only ones), I feel that it's less that the series is struggling to find its identity and more that it wants to change its identity, to avoid feeling stale to returning players. If you're referring solely from Zestiria to Berseria, then maybe, but even then, the series is simply trying to evolve, not to find itself.
I would like the next game in Tales of game to take place in this world one more time to fill in the remaining blanks and resolve one charicter's ultimate fate.
kayden walden-mcdaniel I really don't care about what happened to most of Zestria cast besides 2 party members but there's 4 Charicters I really want to know what happenes to them
Which JRPG series became stagnant? It's basically the opposite. Some series like Final Fantasy and Paper Mario turned to shit because they threw out everything that made the series good in pursuit of newer mechanics nobody asked for. Other series like Dragon Quest continued a their tried and tested formula and were all the better for it. The only stagnant franchise I can think of is Pokémon, which still sells more copies than anything else regardless.
My main concern was the ending and the combat system along with healing magic. Other than those faults i did enjoy the game, made me wish velvet was in zesteria.
The way Michael wrote this sounded like a 3-3.5 to me. I was definitely surprised to see a 4 at the end. As others mentioned, this game is on par with Yakuza 0 and Dishonored 2 and I am hoping that it would be, believe me. I just can't feel the same positive review vibe from both of those games' reviews made by the allies to this one. Well, here's hoping that I get to feel a 4/5 when I play this game.
I dunno why Damiani played this english dub, because the japanese VA's are simply above and beyond the english ones in every regard. With that said..it's one of my favorite JRPG's that I've played in quite a while..from the great story to the characters, skits and banter come together very well.
I know this is kinda late but I just picked up the game for $20 on PS4, but you said this game is kinda on the long side? I'm sorry but 45 hours for a jrpg is on the short side, I typically don't play games this short but the gameplay and battle system is addictive, I consider the story and characters as an added bonus, I don't care what the genre is, gameplay comes first
Dammit this is annoying, I have 3 games I want and they all came out on the same day RE7, Yakuza 0, and Tales of Berseria. Man 2017 is already off to a great start with already 4 great games within just the 1st mouth with another 6-8 (maybe more) releasing in the next 3 months. Really can't help but say that 2017 is already starting to be this gens 2007.
Hopefully, the next Tales features a new engine. At least be something like Gravity Rush 2 visuals. The plot for Berseria is very good (tho I do not agree with its conclusion) and that they should continue making good stories. Character wise, as per the reviewer said - Magilou is the best Tales of Character (probably) ever made.
I'm an experienced players wit 300 platinum trophies but somehow, after 5h of playing this game, I still don't understand the battle system. I just button mash, defend, button mash, defend and that's enough to progress. Of course I play on normal but still - look complicated but plays easy, very easy. I don't know why I should even care to learn the game if button mashing works.
I've purchased so many Tales of games and have pretty much own most of the recent ones except this. YET I have never finished any of them. the farthest I got was in Vesperia before I lost my data.
I hope it comes to the switch. If so, I'd probably get it. I love the tales games.... although I REALLY want a vesperia remake....... They don't even have to do much... just make it hd and ship it.

@@recht_voor_zijn_raap5506 I'll probably get tales of Vesperia for the PS4, there's a promotion on it. Thanks for the advise.

"The story is distinctly darker than its past games." Next quote with cheery tone. "Morning!"
lmao, I got to this comment right as that happened in the video lol
To me, Tales of the Abyss is the best game in the series. I know a lot say Symphonia, however. The Xillia duo was great as well. Zesteria was solid, but felt the combat was more challenging than Xillia 2, the platforming was much better.
If this is somewhere in the same range of quality as the games I mentioned above, then it will be worth the time and money.
Was surprised by the 4 star rating in the end. Sounded more like a 3-3.5 star to me.
This.
Alexander Scheck what i thought as well
I was equally surprised
I agree.
Agree
Great review, I think the game is a step up in a right direction. Story is good, characters are memorable and gameplay is fun.
Anti Heroes.
It is a fairly common troupe.
It’s 9.99 on the ps store, might give it a try
Ok I just found this channel and I might be asking an obvious question. Is this channel by the remnants of Gametrailers?
Flip.555 yes they are, all the easy allies crew are former GT employees.
awesome!!!!! Thanks for the info.
Flip.555 Absolutely, the legends themselves
Yep :) Everyone from the late GT are here, except for Matt Blair (and Elyse, but she left befor it was shut down)
why was GT shutdown in the 1st place?
OMG it’s my GT Reviews voice over!…. I wondered what happened to this reviewer. I used to use GameTrailers for all my new game reviews back in the 20 00’s instant sub for nostalgia alone.
I just picked up this game a week ago, with my only previous Tales experience being Zestiria...which started off great but by the halfway point I was forcing myself to finish lol! Berseria is an incredible JRPG and I'm so glad I gave it a shot, it redeems Zestiria in almost every way :)
This game is 10/10 for me and it's in sale on ps right now for 15 bucks
the review style and narrator reminds me of gametrailers
The Easy Allies have consumed the original members of Gametrailers and are now indistinguishable from the genuine articles.
I don't see the similarity
@@thechocolatefactory Good joke lmao.
UNEASY ALLIANCE
Great review, as usual.
Thanks for another great review guys. I love that you take your time and give a game indepth honest analysis. Because of this I trust your reviews over all other's!!!
In fact, the goal of VIOVET in the early stage was just to avenge his younger brother. But in the middle and later of the game, you will find that VIOVET's goal is vengeance on the surface .In fact, her actual purpose is to save the life of her companion .TO give Altolius a real relief-deathand and give his fake brother a hug. This is his last gentleness as a sister
I only started this game now and I'm regretting waiting for so long. This game is amazing and Velvet is a great character.
Clicked this randomly looking for a decently produced review that isn't IGN or Gamespot...glad I did, this is the GT dude! My life has been missing your reviews!
I was so sad when GT shut down. I always found the video reviews quite good and would be the first place I checked before buying a game. I am so happy I found where you all went!
*runs off to support Easy Allies on Patroon*
Excellent.Did I mishear the entire review?
Better than FFXV
no sorry just no
Dragonslayer uh yes just yes
Kit Kat that’s gonna be a boldfaced no
Fifteen was a fucking backstreet boys sim. So yeah it is better
@@Dragonslayer_1215 you must be delusional to think that FFxv is a good game lmao ive already finished playing it a months ago and i dont even bother to check on the DLC cuz the gameplay is so fcking boring. Not to mention the ridicilously tedious and boring hundreds of fetch quests that gives you useless rewards. Heck they still even add more updates and the game still feels unfinished.
Oh shit. I just happened upon this review, and it's the old Gametrailers crew. I recognized Brandon's sweet voice anywhere.
These outfits are ridiculous lol
Are you triggered over it? Jeez it's a damn game
apparently each character had a different designer, someday Tales of designs will stop being tacky... someday. I like the designs individually, but when paired with the style of the environments and put together with the other party members, it comes off very bizarre.
lol jesus someone is getting overly defensive. Ridiculous outfits are part of the charm.
No? That doesn't mean they aren't ridiculous. Wtf, a clown suit, half samurai and a vampire goth slayer bat.
OMG! Thank you youtube for recommending this video to me! I can't believe I found the GameTrailers guy,
Is it me or does this dude sound like the gametrailers dude
holy shit, nice and greetings from germany. Subbed faster than my shadow could follow up
thanks, Ill check that out
Easy Allies I missed you guys!! Glad to see you're back and doing well(?)!
Damiani feel free to explore the scale. EZA just can't be giving these stars away! 😉
Damn, was really hoping they'd keep the combat style that Xillia had. It's the closest the games got to actually making me care about playing the other characters with how great the character upgrade system was and attention to different play styles. Seeing them simplify the combat is the worst thing they could have done from my perspective.
Dreaming of a tales game with naruto ultimate ninja storm engine ❤
Gabriele Mucci I really want them to make another game with vesperia art style.
A lot of these types of flaws would get blasted on western titles.
not to be mean or anything in terms of the upcoming Resident Evil 7 Biohazard review Easy Allies, i have to ask, how long does it usually take for you guys to create an entire video game review and does it take longer for some games such as RE 7 if it involves VR in any way or what?
cubansupreme they got the review copy of RE7 late apparently, hence the delay.
i'm well aware of them getting their review copy late.
i'm definitely looking forward to the review real soon. i can wait on the game until around next week if i still have any interest in it by than but that might still be debatable due to the game currently having a love/hate thing going on with various people so it's hard for me to decide if i want it or not, that's why i ended up getting Yakuza 0 first.
Not if you're on PC though. It's got Denuvo. Not worth supporting crap like that. You know, if you care about actually owning your game at all that is.
its out ;)
What does it mean for a combat system to have an identity?
DanAwful to be original, innovative or creative and have its own taste on it
I found the coment about Velvet character development superfluous, after all you're talking about a women who's brother was killed and was a prisioner for 3 year which means trauma... Have you ever saw someone with Post-traumatic stress disorder?
nuff said
Hmmm, the review seems to be telling me it's just a step-up from the backlash of Zesteria.
Get it full price or wait for sale?
Good job on the review, Damiani!
sahsnk9 get this as soon as your vesperia itch is gone.
I came back to this games after years as I never finished it due to how repetitive it is, but i must say playing on intense really demands patience
Great review, very informative and to the point. I'll probably grab this on Steam at some point.
I cried everytime I played it. Such an amazing game.
I have just one question. As someone who loved Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia, but hated Graces f, Xillia, Xillia 2 and Zestiria, does this game have anything for me?
I wait for the price to drop.. I have too many games coming out this year to focus on
Its13reezy Don't we all.
Its13reezy persona 5!!!!!!
This game looks great! I'm quite glad to have another ambitious Tales game in my life.
Just give us Vesperia 2 or something ;_; To me Vesperia is still to this date far more superior to every other title that has come after it.. It's such a great game!!
Another great review by Brandon Jones!
You can jump right into this one, you won't miss anything from the main plot, thought it has some references from other games that hopefully will make you more interested in the series overall, I recommend it, this series always had great characters and art, unfortunaly I won´t be able to get it util later this year :(
Is Tales of Graces f any good? I may get that if/when I go get Berseria.
Why do i cry when i think about tales of zestiria and berseria 😭
Personally I was surprised by the amount of stars given after listening to the full review. Definitely sounded like it should have received a lower score.
Great review, I was really on the fence about this game because I love the series but seeing them re use the Zestiria engine again made me think it'd just be more of the same, I love Zestiria but it was getting stale, after watching this review though I'll probably pick up Berseria.
The audio balance sounded off in this review, especially Brandon's voice, compared to other reviews.
Nice review.I think Velvet Isn’t boring but badass honestly.I’d give the game 4 and a half stars.
I'm into JRPGs, but I've never cared much for the Tales games. Even Symphonia, whose story and characters were very by-the-numbers even back in 2003. Maybe it's the anime aesthetic, but maybe I'll give it another chance when this game goes on sale.
Great review as always guys.
Is it a good rpg? Close to witcher 3 or ffxv maybe??
First Tales Of game I'm genuinely interested in. As much as I liked Xilia, it and many other recent Tales Of games felt very formulaic it was getting stale by just looking at the cast. This doesn't seem to be the case (though I'm sure at least some of the story formula will still be there, if they get rid of it entirely they risk losing long-time fans and the series' identity). Will probably pick it up a few months down the road. Not because I'm waiting for the prices to go down, there's just other games I'm more interested in.
I love Velvet, fight me.
new game + worth it??
how is magilu fan service?
I won't lie to you, i'm subbing because of the nostalgic narrator Voice :)
subbed just because the reviewer is the old gametrailers guy, missed his voice reviewing games haha xD
My main concern was the ending and the combat system along with healing magic. Other than those faults i did enjoy the game, made me wish velvet was in zesteria.
Great review Damiani!
Hey man, you got yourself a new viewer. Keep up the good work on the reviews.
Bring it to switch
You're fluent in Japanese, huh? Well not everyone is, and the English voice work (besides Kamoana oh god) is fine.
I am playing it. Better late than never!
Awesome real time combat
I'm an experienced players wit 300 platinum trophies but somehow, after 5h of playing this game, I still don't understand the battle system. I just button mash, defend, button mash, defend and that's enough to progress. Of course I play on normal but still - look complicated but plays easy, very easy. I don't know why I should even care to learn the game if button mashing works.
it's nice to hear again game trailers voice
fuckin love this game and i believe its the most underrated game ive played
I've purchased so many Tales of games and have pretty much own most of the recent ones except this.
YET I have never finished any of them. the farthest I got was in Vesperia before I lost my data.
Gametrailers voice. Insta subscribed!
great review, keep up the good work
did 2:27 give anyone else some serious 'Ashes of Ariandel' vibes?
best review I've seen today while deciding to buy this game or not!!
The characters like hyper generic anime but this game still looks cool. This will be my first "Tales Of" game so I hope I like it.
They might look anime but since graces they act more like perverts than their looks sugest
I hope it comes to the switch. If so, I'd probably get it. I love the tales games.... although I REALLY want a vesperia remake....... They don't even have to do much... just make it hd and ship it.
