    I think most people don't realise how insane of a jump in quality the S23U is for only one year of a time gap between their last flagship. Really impressive!

      Nah, samsung knew what they were doing. They were trying the "apple tactic", delay and observe. Seeing that their sales took a dive cuz android folks are not into bs and would say goodbye without second thoughts compared to apple slaves, they had to show what they were hiding. What they did with the s23 ultra may not be everything they have to show us.

    The S23 Ultra must be really much better when it managed to win your test despite your partially completely failed assessment.Just a few examples. At 06:25: could it be that you are ccmpletly misunderstanding what depth of field is? Your hand is as far from the camera as your beard but it is bluered unnaturally. And the wall behind you: the upper part is almost unblurred while the lower part is completely blurred out. It is actually a complete failure on iPhone's side. And at 08:45 the s23 Ultra is the only one that manages to perfectly capture the upper windows and also the rest. And a remark about stabilization: you claim it is about software, but this is only valid for the SuperSteady. The actual relevant stabilisation is the OIS which you did not take into account and where the new S23 Ultra has set a new gold standard. Seriously, how often do you use SuperSteady?

      My hand is not as far from the camera as my beard is. That would be physically impossible as I am standing sideways. The focus is on my face, and you can see how my face and beard are completely sharp and in focus. My arm very close to the camera is also blurred, as well as my other arm. That is how depth of field works. Many phones keep your whole body in focus, because it's much easier to do that. You can check out our Portrait mode comparison of the S22 Ultra and a professional camera to better understand the differences. th-cam.com/video/855k9SZ2G20/w-d-xo.html
      At 08:45, The subject is me and the people around me. That's what we were filming, not the sky and the buildings behind the window. On the iPhone and the Pixel, the sky is slightly overexposed. On the Galaxy, the subject and the area we're filming is too dark. Which one is more important to you?
      iPhones have always had great stabilization capabilities, even before they implemented an active mode with 2.8K resolution on their newest flagship. You can check out our 13 Pro Max comparisons to see how well they worked without the software. In the end, these are subjective - but you can see me walking and there is no difference in quality when it comes to OIS focused stabilization as all phones are quite good.

    Very, very good comparison, especially the focus on details by cropping in is something I was missing on the other reviews very nice that you did include that, hope to see it on all the future comparisons. I would have factored in the lens flair aswell, because on the portrait photo with the umbrella and the sun in the background the iPhone showed again that it's coating to reduce lens flair is the worst, for me a photo with such a strong lens flair can't win. This is something which also would be interesting to rate in a comparison with the X90 Pro+ as it's a big strenght from Vivo and Zeiss, but I understand that in daylight you depend on the weather which you obviously can't control but it would be interesting to take it into account at night against a light source as well, because that is something you could do everytime even if it's not a sunny day!

    • @versus_com
      @versus_com  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for your nice comment! We agree about the lens flare, just that a slight change in angle sometimes causes this issue, which is unfortunate. If it was a consistent problem with a phone, then we'd be more comfortable calling it out, but the sun can come and go in seconds and this can cause some unfair issues - as you've already pointed out. We'll try to go into more detail with night photos. Thanks again!

    • @flo_h_96
      @flo_h_96 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@versus_com I totally agree! But from what I've seen especially at night lens flair seems to be an overall problem on the iPhone, so it would be surprising if it's no problem in daylight. But it's true it wouldn't be fair to judge in daylight with changing sun, but at night you have consistent lighting. Amazing that you always answer and refer to my arguments! I appreciate that!

    This is exactly the system for a good comparison I suggested on another popular tech channel. Giving not only one point to the best shot but distributing 0-3 points instead makes the comparison much more relevant. Pointing out the strengths and weaknesses in different scenarios really helps us who doesnt have the opportunity to analyse the pictures for 10 minutes. And showing the end results broken down by categories helps everyone to pick the phone for his/her type of usage. Great one, congrats! One more subscriber for the channel :)

      @@versus_com First of all, the sky is not "slightly overexposed"... It's overexposed to the point that you can't see at all some of the structures. Second, the "landscape with you in it" is the subject and considering how little surface you take on the photo, the landscape is the first subject with you the second to make the photo more personal. A portrait photo, a selfie are shots where you're definitely the primary and mainly only subject, not on the photo in discussion. So in conclusion this kind of shot should have the best overall outcome, not just you occupying just 3% of the area

I trust your channel and opinions too, and I found the website today while I was searching for your name, love the website, still did not find your name, by the way. All I said was... Your video had some points that contradict the observations made by a few other channels. Maybe it might be them doing sponsored biased content. Or maybe them having early access to the OneUI 5.1? Did you do it with 5.1? I donno but, just some of the things seemed different from their opinions.
      Also, you have a different taste for photos and videos, different preferences and opinions about contrast, skin tone and all that. It could be all those variables. And especially about the mic quality outdoors. I was surprised for the result I saw on your video, I'm actually seriously reconsidering buying. I hope you guys found that small inconsistencies or big inconsistencies with the more amounts of comparison you guys did, might be a bit more extensive, with multiple shots taken into account and hence giving the most accurate result. But, the fact that these comparisons and reviews can actually make a person change their mind, help a person choose their phone, drive sales up or down, it's insane. i just love your work, guys. Just that sometimes I don't agree with your best pick of the better photo from the video and no worries about that, I think that is healthy to understand the downsides from a different perspective. So, yeah, that is a long enough comment. 😂

    i know you guys put a lot of effort into this, but .... the points and criteria seem pretty arbitary, at 4:37 for example you decided to focus on the details in the shadows and give the pixel the win for that, but the result of the phone raising those shadows is that the rest of the picture looks washed out, in addition google is oversharpening here so the beanie looks like a barcode rather than a piece of clothing.
    Another example is 15:47, you gave equal points to all 3, but the samsung is the only one to control the streetlamps, and the buildings look naturally sharp, compared to the blurry pixel, and oversharpened iphone.

    • @versus_com
      @versus_com  ปีที่แล้ว

      At 4:37, the building in the back actually has more details on the Pixel than it does on the Galaxy though. My face also looks more detailed and appealing. We wouldn't necessarily call that washed out - as there's not much difference between the Pixel and the Galaxy in that photo for example. The street lamps also barely look different in those photos. We do focus on that when a phone blows up the lamp or when one of them makes it look very natural - but they're not really different here. It's all a matter of perspective in the end. Thanks for your comment!

Almost all the shot are darker for a reason on Samsung, if you can see the indoors and the sky clouds outside, that's always a win.

    • @versus_com
      @versus_com  ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm following something like 15 youtube channels for the last 10 days and watching every camera review of Galaxy S23 Ultra, compared typically with Iphone Pro Max and Pixel 7 Pro.
    All of them comes with totally different outcomes. This channel is basically the only one that claims S23 Ultra have the best camera for Video. But if you go through different categories you'll realize there is no consensus for which camera is better, for example - almost everyone give the first place for stabilization to S23 Ultra, but here you give it to Iphone.
    And this is just an example - generally everyone have different experience and what I can say is that those results should be taken with very-very serious caution, because of the sample size - you really don't do a scientifically sound tests, don't follow the best practices and you are relying on luck - basically you might pick a scene where a particular phone is better and you give him a first place, where in real life it will shoot better in 99% than the other - just bad luck.
    What I would like to see is a better methodology, so you keep the same objective way of comparison - is it color accuracy is more important (how much?), is it the amount of details more important (how exactly are measuring them - is 5% more detailed, or 30%), is it about object separation, how good the blur of the background is, how far you can zoom, how stable shots you can make, etc, etc.
    What about the meta review? Let's say you take 10 different reviews of the phone with their pictures and video and try to extract your results based on their shots, by keeping the same criteria while evaluating them - are you going to have the same results presented here, based on the other shots and videos?
    Overall I agree that S23 Ultra is better phone, but based on all other reviews and what I see from there (selected) shots and videos: I don't like color accuracy (Samsung needs to add an option to select that), I don't like also how flat the images are - i.e. they try to expose the shadows like there is no shadows at all and brighten too much - I guess it will be better if they keep dial a notch down those and the last thing I don't like in the video section is that there is a bit more artefacts that should be fixed. What I don't agree with most reviewers is the complains about not been sharp enough or having a bit more noise - exactly that is the big plus, because it means there is no too much processing and thus loosing details - you can always do an extra processing afterward (to remove the noise and apply a bit more sharpening which will match 100% the iphone video quality). This could be also an option in the Gallery application, but the "raw" image saved on the phone to be exactly as is, so it can be differently processed later.
    P.S. I bought S23 Ultra and replaced my old (current) S9+.

      @versus_com  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Julian! We actually mentioned that if you only need 4K, then the iPhone is still the best choice. The Galaxy is just really close to the iPhone in videos, and surpasses it in points because of a really impressive 8K feature. If you don't need 8K, then yes - the iPhone is still the best!
      We don't know who gives the stabilization to the S23 Ultra, but the iPhone 14 Pro shakes a lot less with fast and rapid movements. We don't know how other people test their phones, so obviously we have to go by our own results. We will think about your methodology recommendations, and talk about it at the office. Thanks!

    • @JulianBG
      @JulianBG ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adyady3099 I have way worse opinion of blind tests seen in many youtube channels - you don't know what is the real light, real colors, etc, so people pick picture that looks good, not accurate - this is a very serious flaw!
      If I take the same pictures with full frame Sony camera you'll be surprised how many people will prefer iphone or google pixel instead!
      In order those test to make any sense, they should provide a base image that to be compared to, i.e. image that is calibrated to the reality (shoot by professional with high quality camera) and ask people which of the three is close match. Secondary, phonearena is known for low quality, unprofessional, baist reviews and I wouldn't even bother with them.
      Regarding the Vivo and other Chinese brands - I'm not on the market for those type of hardware. I had too many flagship Chinese phones and I'm done with this. They are way too expensive and lack any type of support (software, customer) and warranty. They don't even officially operate in many countries and they know what they are offering - just plain hardware with a lot a flows, so I don't need paper flagships that might have one great feature or another and in the same time not having the whole package.
