I remember absolutely loving the first game. Staying up late past bedtime, sneaking around at night to go grab my DS off the charger, trying to make the click clacks of the DS opening and closing as silent as possible, just to play fossil fighters and Pokemon ranger. Those were the days.

Oh my god, I did the same exact things for just about any game, FF was one of them hehe
SAAAAME. BUT WITH CHAMPIONS. Let's be honest: this blows pokemon out of the water. And, I think a more action combat oriented spin off would play very well. Kinda like where you take full control of your vivosaur for a third person combat section using moves. FP is earned through either successfully evading the enemy moves, or through waiting for a small amount of time. As it constantly regens. And FP Plus would make the recharge cut down by 25%

Also still mad that when you finally get the legendary ones they tone them down to overpowered regular vivasaurs which makes sense from a balance perspective but just really disappointed me

I know dude, it felt like 50% of the game was post-game content bc of how many big battles just kept coming. As in champions as well. So much stuff and it's the best, currently replaying them on desmume

The fact that fossil fighters had good 3D graphics only two years after Pokemon Diamond and peril were barely chugging along with 3D modes shows how well they hold up. Fossil fighters was the first game I ever spent over 100 hours on one save file.

To be fair, a lot of the viviosaurs attack animations were identical to the ones of similar/related ones. I guess this was still better than pokemon, since the animations were the same regardless of the Pokemon. I'm still scared by seeing dragon pulse come out of MT's crouch in Pokemon B&W 2!

I remember tricking my mother into buying the first game when I was 6, when the only other game I had was Pokémon Platinum and never once did I see this game as a Pokémon clone. Also Frontier broke my soul, the story was sick, but beside that, it never held a candle it’s predecessors.

facts. my brother and i are in agreement that ff champions is the best game out of the trilogy because it has all of the content of the first game but just improved upon it. unfortunately no one can say the same about frontier. although frontier had a couple of quality of life improvements but, that's really all it has on the previous 2

The dark fossils were the worst because you couldn't drill the first layer. You had to hammer it.

Champions is my favorite Fossil Fighter game. Btw, in Fossil Fighter Champions there is an NPC staff at one of the areas that says this when you speak to him:
"Fast cars are exciting, right? Maybe we could have people battle while driving around a racetrack!"
He quickly follows it up with:
"...No, you're right. That's a dumb idea."
P.S. They were right lmao.

And then, we got YuGiOh 5Ds, instead of cars and dinosaur, we got a motorcycle and virtual monsters. At least, it's close enough.

The story in champions is amazing.
This reminded me of a anime I used to watch when I was a kid called " Dinosaur King " , I loved the intro cuz it had dancing dinosaurs and the dinosaurs evolved and devolved like Digimon .
They made a \game version of it and it was lit af

Didn't watch the cartoon because I couldn't find it, but I did have the game, and I actually had no idea the show even existed until several years after I found the game. One of my first childhood video games, and one of my favorites.
I found the show on netflix or hulu at one point, still as good as before

It’s sad that the series kind of went by the wayside (I was SOOOOO excited for Frontier, until I actually played it and was disappointed). Thankfully though, the rather small fandom around it is SUPER dedicated.
The battle style is so unique and strategic, and pulled it off a lot better than Pokémon triple battles that came after.

Rotation battles are a better comparison, but even so, they were only in one generation and were still simpler than Fossil Fighters

I remember replaying Champions over and over again because it had a New Game + feature so you could keep all your old vivosaurs. I wish Pokémon had a feature like that

Frontier was such a massive disappointment and it’s good people can let that dissolve into the ether, hopefully since Nintendo purchased the ip they might do something but rn I’m just gonna hope for the best

The game was that rubbish and made people wonder why they even liked the series in the first place.
The combat strayed from the first 2 games, bone buggies were neat but felt odd, they cut a lot of vivosaurs, and the butt jokes from that one kid got old incredibly fast. I've never heard a person use "hind quarters" in a sentence except for him.

While I never played it, I was always interested in playing Fossil Fighters, and I honestly feel it got the Yo-Kai Watch treatment of being seen as a mediocre Pokemon rip-off when they were actually pretty well-made games with interesting battle mechanics. And also like Fossil Fighter, I hope we get a Switch sequel (or even a remake) and the eventual localization of YW4 for the Switch.
I never heard of the series being called a Pokemon clone.
The act of fighting dinosaurs and cleaning fossils is something that is pretty different from Pokemon's Battle system
@@compatriot852 Exactly, I've spoken with people about this, and they said that just looked at it, assumed it was just a rip-off or another ds shovelware title, and moved on when it comes to these games without giving them a shot.

it did get the yokai watch treatment :( especially since this game series can be hard and brutal (And dark sometimes) and yokai watch is also really amazing
YW4 localization is already confirmed to happen. It's still somehow set for this year in spite of [current global crisis]. If you look at the release dates for the past few games 2020 is exactly when it should be too. Blasters 2 on the other hand, that one's not getting localized sadly.
I wouldn't hold my breath for the YW Jam game getting localized which is a shame considering it's a school life/RPG hybrid like Persona and FE3H which are super popular over here.
Also not holding my breath for the supposed localization of the Shadowside and Forever Friends movies. There was interest in localizing them but we haven't heard anything since then and considering the anime is dead over here, the odds are so very slim.

I almost never sell or return games; I got rid of Frontier within 3 days. I loved the first two so much; they had a stronger system to work with and just ignored it. The only positive thing about it is I liked how some areas had wandering wild vivosaurs despite it not making sense lore wise.

The original and Champions are one of my favorite games I played while growing up and it makes me happy seeing more people acknowledge them.
Hope it'll come back some day cuz Frontier really was an awful note to go out on.

Every time I saw one of these games ( not just this series though, But also other similar series) on Gamestop I always thought they were just some Pokemon rip offs and they were not worth buying them.....I regret that now :v

Champions was one of my favorite games as a kid and I was SO excited for Frontier to come out. but then I hated it upon release. when a 9-year old can tell that a game is bad, then you know it’s REALLY bad

I played the first 2 before frontier and 13 year old me was so excited to get it and try it out. Just like you I remember being super disappointed especially when it cost me $40 and I bought the first and second from gamestop for about $5 for the original and $20 for champions
Fossil Fighters games were my childhood. Instead of Pokémon games I played the Fossil Fighters series haha. Thank you for making a video on this awesome and nostalgic video game series! It warms my heart to see that there are still fans out there! 😊
there will always be a special place in my heart for fossil fighters, i got introduced to the series by a cousin i met at my great grandfathers funeral. i was visiting his house for a weekend, and he let me try the game out, i fell in love with the series instantly, and it was, and will always be, some of my favorite games. i even enjoyed frontiers but only for driving my car around lol, otherwise frontiers sucked ass

With all the nostalgia blasts, I’m honestly super tempted to draw some of these vivosaurs & characters out of pure admiration. The original almost felt like a Saturday morning cartoon show the more I think about it.
Seeing Fossil Fighters finally get the respect it deserves makes me die of happiness. Loved the first 2 games and played them so much, and the 3rd game was....ok, I guess.

as I kid I loved dinosaurs and getting older I loved Pokémon, this game was the love letter I wanted and it was much more than what I was asking for
I really gotta check out Champions one day as one thing that threw me off as a kid was the artstyle change, I’m willing to be more open towards it now
What threw me off was that there was no mention of the events of the previous game.
Champions was pretty good imo. The original game was still more charming, but Champions holds its own.

I remember asking for Champions and got the first one instead. Never having played any Fossil Fighters game beforehand, it was still amazing.

The first fossil fighters games and Champions still to this day remain as my favorite games, whenever anyone asks me, those r my responses, however, whenever anyone asks what my least favorite game is, I say fossil fighters: frontier. Not only is it disappointing compared to the previous 2 installments, I couldn’t even play it as a stand alone game, I played it for a few hours and kept tying to love it and get into it, but it sucks, reeeeeally bad. I replay the first 2 games every few years bc I can’t stay away, I just have so much fun every time, no matter how old I am

I'm still forever salty at Pokemon fans completely dissing anything that even looked remotely close to Pokemon because I think this series could have gone much farther without that stigma.

this game was such a huge part of my childhood. i used to play it on my ds and my dad would play it along with me on his ds. we would always spend so much time together trying to get every vivosaur and getting all the secret ones in post game then getting them all max level. then when frontier came out i got it and played it for maybe 20 minutes and never touched it again. it was so disappointing seeing such a memorable and lovable franchise thrown away.

I loved this series and played all 3 entries to completion. Absolutely one of my all-time favorites with 2 being the high point. It is nice to see all of these videos popping up out of the woodworks for this franchise, and it gives me hope that the series will be revived better than it was left.

Oh my god...the Childhood nostalgia is overwhelming me this was one of my favorite DS games of all time. It was tough as hell but it was very fun and rewarding You my good monger have some of the best Videos on all of TH-cam.

@@E4439Qv5 My point is that it really goes to show their mindset when they hyperfocus on Pokemon and not even consider the other DS mon RPG with dinosaurs in it. The footage of Frontier in this video shows that the franchise fell so far that it copied Terry from the Dinosaur King anime, how he starts off small when not in battle then grows big when his card is scanned.
A part of me is holding out hope for the series to make a return despite all the odds stacked against it

Also, yes... I died a little when I saw the first trailer for Frontier and the music started, although I still bought and played all the way through because it was part of the franchise I so dearly missed. But most of the experience was so forgettable that I don't remember much.
BUT, I will say that as someone who always sticks with his starter, I do remember and did like Nibbles. He would honestly be the only thing from that game I would want to keep

Fossil Fighters is fantastic! Good lord, I played this damn thing endlessly.
God I remember this game when I was 10. This was my first ever strategy game and got me into JRPGs I got so close to completing the whole thing and I honestly should look for my DS card and play it again

It's so sad that RED got bought out. This game was my life. I actually like some of Frontier's redesigns, specifically Tricera and Mihu, along with variations from different countries and renames after famous skeletons, i.e. Sue, Stan, and Big Al.
Well, now that I know that the series really is dead, I'm gonna go mourn and think up a new dinosaur RPG.

Well, I loved Spectrobes, ND never saw this game before.
In terms of the fossil gameplay, they're quite similar, but in terms of plot, battle, and character design, I feel more appealed by Spectrobes.
In terms of plot both are too different and the antagonist motivation is quite different.

I get the feeling that in addition to simplification for a younger audience, part of Frontier's problem is that it was trying to emphasize the multiplayer experience at the expense of singleplayer. For one thing, the new battle system in Frontier works better in multiplayer, since you have real people to strategize with. Also, you can't pause the game even in singleplayer. This wasn't a problem in the first two games because there were no roaming enemies (with one specific exception that I recall) and battles were turn-based and not timed, but neither of those are the case in Frontier. (The rogue Vivosaurs can even _interrupt your fossil cleaning_ which causes you to lose the fossil.)
I think I saw some advertisement for the original title back when I was a kid.
But I never had the opportunity to play anyone of this title. My head was dug into Pokémon and Bakugan. But I must, admit, It looks promising, and for an strange reason, I feel nostalgic towards it. Perhaps because I remember the advertisement that was in a manual and it remembers my childhood?.

I mean, the plot sounds a bit like parts of several pokemon games. But the gameplay is very different, aside from "creature fighting creature" but like you pointed out that's not an uncommon game type.
I'm kinda sad that I never heard of this until now.
Yeah it’s pretty unfair comparing them like that tbh. It just takes away any identity fossil Fighters has (and any other game that has the premise of collecting powerful animals without ripping anything off)

Just now I realized Fossil Fighters and Dinosaur King are different franchises.
Never played or watched either, but I always assumed they were the same thing.
Have you played spectrobes? I remember a digging minigame in it where you blow into the microphone to blow off the dust. And maybe between send fossil into a machine to bring it back to life if I'm remembering that right.

i actually had this game as a kid, it was really fun and even though i sucked at cleaning the fossils it was really rewarding when you would clean one perfectly, man i miss this game

By any chance, have you heard of this little RPG called Spectrobes? I feel like a retrospective from you would do it justice.
It's some of my favorite content on youtube, watching people rediscover my favorite games and realizing how great they were. The Fossil Fighters series are my two favorite games if all time, and my least favorite mistake.

I remember watching Disney Channel and seeing year 3000 covered by the Jonas brother only to lead into a fossil fighter commercial. That's why the year 3000 is forever engraved with fossil fighters in my mind lol it was basically my two loves mixed together. Pokemon and dinosaurs.
I remember a time when we (me, my bro, and even mom) would visit Gamestop, and time after time, I eyed the first game. In the same way you showed Spectrobes in the beginning of the vid, I felt it was closer to that than Pokemon, with the main exception to it being turn-based, which, to me, back then, was a deal-breaker. The only turn-based games I've ever really enjoyed playing were the "Mario and Luigi" games, mainly Superstar Saga, as it gave the ability to actively evade or counter enemies during battle. Learning the story from this, it still doesn't strike my fancy, but the design and certain characters, I like.

I'm just now finding out so many TH-camrs like Jaden and You are talking about Fossil Fighters.
And I am so happy. Fossil Fights and FF Champions were so amazing, I preferred the first one but the second one was amazing.
I specifically remember having a specific favorite that I'd always aim for. Tarbosaurus. The purple, yellow, big teeth, and sail just hit for me.
Hopefully we get a Nintendo Switch version but I seriously don't think we will, it feels like almost every game studio is aiming for what players don't want nowadays....oh well I still have them on DS and still occasionally replay them to this day.
