  • While not as successful as a certain other DS spinoff series, Pokemon Ranger is really quite the interesting series with a good bit of depth.

      I’d say that Gen 1- Gen 4 was when Nintendo, Game Freak and several others took risks and experimented with the Pokemon formula by making spinoffs of different genres. I mean you had a game based on the official trading card game, Pokemon Snap, Puzzle League and Puzzle Challenge, the Rangers and Mystery Dungeon series, Trozei, Dash and a wide variety of others.
      Gen 5 and onwards I don’t see them making as much as before. I’m assuming that’s because Nintendo seems to not have as much gaps in between each generation like before.

    • @ahighdef.experience3394
      @ahighdef.experience3394 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@Ardhamon5000 The gaps are the same. Gen 1 -> 2 = 3 years, Gen 2 -> 3 = 3 years, Gen 3 -> 4 = 4 years, Gen 4 -> 5 = 4 years, Gen 5 -> 6 = 3 years, Gen 6 -> 7 = 3 years, and Gen 7 -> 8 = 3 years. The only anomalies were the one extra year between Gens 3, 4, and 5.
      I'd include Gen 5 in the golden era as we got great spin-offs such as Pokepark 2 and Conquest, as well as Black 2 and White 2 being the largest Pokemon games to date in terms of sheer content (on par with the postgame of HGSS).

      Maximilian Fischer exactly. Despite lasting only a short moment (about an hour or two of gameplay) the ranger school leaves a massive impression and expertly establishes both the controls and the settings. Plus it also introduces the player to partner Pokémon (which brought me to near tears upon remembering my staravia).

    • @yiangaruga4928
      @yiangaruga4928 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      *IMO* that's the only flaw of the game.. It's super boring and the ranger mechanics aren't so difficult or complex (especially since you don't even learn the actual advanced things in the beginning) that you'd need such an extensive tutorial for them tied around characters that don't really even end up being significant. In other words it's pretty pointless, could've done the tutorial way quicker or introduce the mechanics little by little when you walk out from the school.
      I'm sure alot of people didn't even reach the greatness of Shadow of Almia cause of the beginning. It's also one of the reasons why I don't really wanna replay the games, it all starts so slowly.

    • @ledodxdewqasfer7400
      @ledodxdewqasfer7400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@yiangaruga4928 I mean I can understand most of your complaints, but literally every character you get introduced to in the school is important in the story at some point besides, like, your homeroom teacher. Personally, I really liked it, especially when they do a call back when you do your own ranger day at the school. It really made me feel like I had gone up in the world, and it really enhanced the sense of progression the Ranger Ranks held. Like when you get top ranger, it feels so much more incredible because you've been with the protagonist from the very start of their journey, and I really enjoyed that.

    I feel like I’m in the minority when I try to put Guardian Signs higher up than the other games. I’ll grant the complaints about difficulty, though the high HP may have been to offset the large increase in events that can cause damage (flying, hero trial). One big thing I enjoyed was that there was a really strong world building effort for the Oblivia region. They had a substantial mythos that spread between islands and was fully connected to what the pinchers were doing. At the very least, Oblivia did a good job of feeling like a unique and interesting region. I’ll also give them props for not only having a doomsday weapon, but letting it be used as an example, wiping an entire area off the map.

      Man I remember in school there were so many rumors about how to get Darkrai and literally all of them were bullshit, back in the days before smart phones (or at least, before children commonly had them) gave everyone the ability to immediately call someone out for making shit up on the spot so everyone just said whatever they thought someone else would believe and we just trusted it, those were good times. I had a gen four mainline Pokemon game, though I can't remember which, and after dedicating what was likely dozens of hours to doing all the weird nonsense I was told by my fellow gremlins (stuff like "if you go to this specific spot and press against it just right you can clip out of bounds and catch every legendary from every game," or the particularly devious "if you talk to this character 999 times it makes Darkrai appear") I ended up getting an action replay for my birthday and just hacked Darkrai into my save, not even because I figured out I had been lied to but just because I was like 11 and had no more patience to give to getting it the "correct" way.

      Doing all the missions 4 player should be completely doable without much grinding, though it might take some practice, as no one can afford to die, and different people have different skill levels.

    I think Ranger and Mystery Dungeon could have a good comeback on the Switch. Not that MD ever left, but it also hasn't had games with the same passion as the first few. I can't put my finger on it, but there is just something that feels lacking.

      Gates to infinity was just really gimmicky and the story left me wanting.
      Super mystery dungeon was better, but I felt like the pace was all over the place and then it just ends.
      I think part of the reason games after "Rescue Team" and "Explorers of" have been slightly or majorly disappointing is that those games didn't focus that much on the online features, but the later games did. Online features don't have to be a bad thing, but to me it seems like they might have taken development time from other things or maybe they just didn't care about other things because they figured people could use the online features instead, but the issue is if the game isn't doing that hot or it's been a few years the Online features isn't going to age that well. Personally I also play a lot when I'm away from the internet so if a lot of the content requires online I'm going to feel the game was lacking if it couldn't stand on it's own.

      Agreed. Super disappointed me. The character development is thrown out the window as soon as you move cities and the difficulty curve is all over the place because you can recruit op pokemon from the very beginning. The fact that it makes all pokemon recruitable also hurts the constant changes around town that you saw in the first installments (ie there aren't any because pokemon just have one catch line)

    Personally, I found Guardian Signs to be fantastic. I really enjoyed it from start to finish, the Sign gimmick was fun, and the story was certainly an interesting one. Not to mention, the music was great; the Pincher Admins' fight theme was phenomenal, and still one of the best battle themes I've heard in a long time.

    Aw yeah! Shadows of Almia! One of my favorite games! Me and my brother played it a lot, but it caused us to miss some parts, since we would take turns to play on the same save file. But I've replayed it multiple times since then, so I got the full story.
    My favorite character was the bookstore girl. Seeing going from scared victim to then see her on her way to fulfill her dreams...! Aw yeah! (She was actually a really small background character in that harbor city that got overrun by crazed Pokémon and electric gates. If you go and talk to her at different times throughout the game she first says thanks for saving the city, then later she says that she wants to own a bookstore, and later when the bookstore owner moves she stands infront of the bookstore and says that she's gonna own it some day or something! Love it! And compared to the other major and shallow characters, that real actual character development... or something)
    My actual favorite part was checking all the fridges! They all had either something funny inside or something cute that developed the character who lived in that house. But there was one you couldn't check... Big and orange that beast was. I think it's hiding a secret... It's in the fridge in the house of the secret scientist's (of the evil team) grandparents' house. I think it's suspicious... I bet there is an elevator to his secret lab down there!

    Guardian Signs is my favorite out of the three installments. I genuinely think it has the best story line out of the three, I just love how the plot is all about the region's history. The pinchers felt so ridiculous at first, and then over time you find out the weapons they use are the same weapons the king's army used in the past, and once they finally wear the armors the become oddly different, less goofy. As a child that felt almost terrifying. Don't even get me started on the giant flying castle, that was genuinely intimidating, especially when it wiped an island off the map in the matter of seconds.
    The characters were lovable as well, I especially liked the blue and the red admin of the nappers. (I don't know the English names, please bare with me.) Nema just unlocking the top ranger features by hacking your capture styler instead of you actually becoming one was also comical.
    This is a very unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer not to choose my own partner. Pichu had its own motives to go with you, it got its own story line. It genuinely felt like a friend and an important part of your team. Though it was a nice idea to choose your own partner in SoA, it also caused the partners to not feel like real teammates. They were replaceable, and because there were so many different partners, they weren't really part of the story. They walked next to you and that was it. I felt no connection to my partner at all, despite never changing it (I used Pachirisu throughout the entire game). I also didn't like the selection they gave us. Why am I stuck with first stage pokemon? Why can't I have a pokemon like Sven's Luxray?
    Another thing that is just my personal opinion, but I'm going to mention anyway: I think GS has the best player character designs. I love the way Ben and Summer look. (Though, I have to say that I also love Lunick's and Solana's designs. Kellyn's and Kate's designs on the other hand are not my cup of tea.)
    That doesn't mean I don't have any critique on the games though:
    The missions in the past should have been connected to the main plot line. I never played any of them, because none of my friends played the ranger games.
    The cities and routes were really small/short in comparison to SoA. The towns being rather small made sense for the region, but the routes being so short did not.
    The hand holding in the game was ridiculous. No, you do not need to tell me I should call Suicune any time we need to pass water, I am perfectly able to figure that out by myself. Yes, I saw them using Raikou's sign to open the door just now, you do not need to tell me to use Raikou's sign 3 seconds after the cut scene happened.
    Though I didn't mind Pichu being overpowered, because I don't mind games being easy (I'm terrible at video games, so I'm not actively looking for challenging games.), I have to agree that it was incredibly annoying when enraged bosses used attacks that covered the entire screen or when they were moving way too quickly. It made it basically impossible to use poke-strengths without them either missing or fainting the second they are placed on the battle field. You did have to wait until Pichu appeared in those cases and honestly, it's boring when you basically can't do anything yourself.
    A minor issue that doesn't really affect the game play, but did feel odd was that none of the ranger NPCs ever battled the nappers. After saving Ben/Summer, they're basically always with you, yet you're the only one capturing pokemon. Why are you going with me if you're not going to contribute anything? (This also applies to SoA, but at least in the beginning of the game that one ranger actually takes on half of the opponents. In GS this didn't even happen a single time.)
