As I watch the comparison of the characters of both the shows, it stands out to me how the old designs seem to have more volume/depth. Even thought the new designs have the black shadows anatomically correct, yet they do not seem to create the same sense of depth for some reason.

Its a HUGE detail that amongst others, almost every video calling the OG X-men show "Perfect", leaves out...or the fact that the brilliance of the show wasn't in the inconsistent models and budget animation, but in the fact that the stories were right out of the at that time, current X-men comic run. There's too much "Group think" going on and not enough objectivity.
It’s because the artstyle of the original show uses 3 tone shadows most of the time but 97 uses 2 tone shadows most of the time. Due to this the original is way more off model and messier art and lower quality animation due to the complexity, 97 on the other hand has cleaner, better, and more consistent animation.

Modern action cartoons/animation tend to oversimplify all shapes that are to be animated while the older stuff, like GI JOE, Bionic 6, 4 of the 1st 5 pilot episodes of TMNT(toei animation), Thundercats as well, they all have more depth and volume to the base linework even before tones and colors are applied. It's 100% a byproduct of the art direction.

Problem is also that they gave detail to the men and took details away from the women. Rogue and Storm's hair has less detail than Gambit's abs... why? Jean and Rogue's faces don't have enough structure. Jean's cheekbones are non existent. Rogue is too white and rounded. It looks cheapie
And rogue abs disappeared, also breast sizes and glutes in everyone of them lol. Storm's hair doesn't need the change because of animation for she almost don't appear in action in this season too, they should keep it, it was iconic
While I do respect the original series the animators tried WAY too hard to replicate the Jim Lee/Scott Williams style which was absolute suicide! That’s kind of why it came out a little wonky sometimes. The new ones fixed that problem by streamlining the shading but leaving the character designs intact.
If I had to give a reason, likely to try and make the animator’s job a little easier because hair is one thing that is hard to animate properly though more likely it was to do something different with Bishop.

Hate the redesigns. old designs and animation is still gorgeous. Yes there are nit pick parts in the old show that is very budgeted at spots. But there are just as much amazing parts in the old show that I'm glad was made back then and not today where they try to cut as much corners as possible. But overall it looked great especially for a serious weekly animated show. Calling it problematic has certainly gotten by blood boiled a bit. Especially how lazy flash cartoonish the redesigns are

It looks good for the time, but not great today. It does suffer being too complex. Yeah, it’s a nitpick, but it’d be a bigger problem today.
it looks like the standard anime quality of these last years, nothing special like back in the day. Still, these days is the best tv show animation there is and too standarized/already seen it for many people's taste. If the show isn't a success, I will blame the standarized animation.

Even tho cartoons from the 90's were very detailed, x men tas was animated by AKOM, who are mostly known for Simpsons, and the fourth season of Transformers g1. If you watch those shows you'll know how cheap their animation is. That's why I think toei's Pryde of x -men, and studio Mir's x-men 97 both have better quality.

all charactars look fine some more so than others except for storm they fucking ruined storm my girl doesn't even has the blank eyes anymore when using her powers and they messed up her hair and cape. she's literally the only women who didn't get prettier (cause she was already hot af) but they actually made her design less appealing
Actually computer animation 3D and 2D digital was around during that time but it was still very much niche, and not a mainstream production tool for animated series. Just to be clear here. Apple nor Pixar created computer animation, though it is true that the first full length 3d computer animated film was indeed Pixars Toy Story. In 1996. But the tools and their developers had been around decades prior.
So that’s why the animation was so good at the beginning and then the last season, the animation sucked. It was too detailed. And that’s why this show’s animation isn’t as good. They tried to make it easier to animate by taking the details out.
They were problematic for the animators because it was a nightmare to design and animate character with that much detail. Which is why in 97 they streamlined the designs to make them easier to animate
Holy shirt, I faved that fan art on tumblr. That's wild. But then again, the realistic Pokemon guy got hired for the movie, so if you have the talent, sometimes good things happen.
I do miss the detail from the original animation style of the animated series. That and the decision in not allowing Catherine Disher to play Jean Grey
So far, the only new designs I don’t like are Morph and Magneto’s costume. It’s like they picked the absolute worst outfit Magneto has ever worn, lol. I really think they would have been better off with the white one instead. As for Morph, first, he needs a fucking normal name like Scott and Logan, and secondly I have no idea what possessed these people to use such a cringey doppelgänger type look for him. It makes him look more like a villain than X-Man, especially when he’s using it while not “on duty”. I think someone compared it to Voldemort and they are right on the money. The only other thing, so far, that bothers me are the characters’ eyes. Their pupils always appear to be dilated, like they’re all heavily coked up or something and I find it makes certain close-ups very weird. Like especially that close-up shot of Magneto when he’s talking about the Will. He looks high.
Magneto's costume is from the comics and was used in the same trial as '97 thus why they used it. I do agree with you about Morph using the blank face as it just makes him look like Caliban (whom I thought that was the case when they first announced '97 since Jubilee knows him) or Chameleon from Spider-Man.
Technically Morph has a real name, Kevin Sydney, they just never referenced it in the original show and so far haven't referenced it in '97 as of episode 3.
Dunno if it was intended or not but the only thing this video has managed to prove is that modern artists suck balls at drawing and fancy digital tools won't make up for their lack of talent. The old designs were perfect, while the new ones all look flat and lack detail in comparison.
THEY STREAMLINED IT FOR A REASON. The OG X-Men show was great but the animations were extremely stiff. And it doesn't help that they were working with close deadlines. The reason why 97 streamlined the designs is so that animation becomes easier and the animators can focus more on making the movement feel natural and lifelike rather than so much detail in the drawings that to save cost the movement would need to be stiffer

Grew up watching this along with Batman: TAS, Spider-Man: TAS, and The Tick... what an unbelievable level of quality on display within these shows. I say the mastery of anatomy and animation from these teams could only be rivaled by Japanese anime (and a great deal of animes are still-frame dialogue shots, until the big fight scene occurs)..... Not really a fan of this woman's re-designs... As seen with a great deal of art today, it has a tint of "Trendy Instagram white wash"... Generally undefined and desexualized.......... It’s too bad she couldn’t find the balance she was looking for. While the new animation is far superior the over simplification of the designs is pretty jarring and not a good look. So far though the stories have somewhat offset the bad design choices that were made.
This is the kind of passion Marvel truly needs back to their workflow. X-Men '97 is a love letter to the original show and it respects the source material.

That's why so many anime shows end at 12 episodes. They run out of money because they spend almost all of it on animation. Like 2% of anime shows last more than 12 episodes.
Not quite. In anime the backgrounds look realistic but the characters faces are often simple. Depending on the show characters can go off model for a joke.
You gotta pay attention to animes more, designs are pretty simple over there too. Not as simplified as the west but still simple enough to make the job easier. You'll never see overly detailed animes unless two conditions are met. They have enough money to pay animators more to add in such detail and if the animators have enough time. Otherwise, it'll never happen
unfortunately it doesn't look like the original at all. The simplifying has completely removed the essence of the original and made it look modern. I watched that show as a child in the 90s and it's absolutely epic. They don't animate like that anymore in the US and it shows
People don't animate like that anymore because the tons of details in the old designs create tons of problems for workflow. It's just animation 101. The current design, imo, is the best compromise between detail and workability.

The old characters look much better. The new ones look flat and lose a ton of detail, and look way less sexy for both female and male characters. Way to take away all of the lines that would make any of the characters actually look attractive. No more ripped muscles or curvy sexy shapes. Guess everything has to be flat and ugly these days. I find it ironic that some hand draw anime looks really dated on certain shows and movies and only reason to come back to it was the stories when the U.S. cartoons Like X-Men, Batman and Spider-Man are just artistic with almost every frame with great stories. But now anime has better art with 2D animation where the U.S. are becoming the questionable ones. Hell, for BTAS(Batman The Animated Series) when they shifted Art styles is noticeable, especially with Joker (God what were they thinking?), then another style change when Justice Leage came along but it improved version 2 of Batman. Now to get to my point because I should just make a video about style change for Batman alone. It's ok to simplify the animation in comparison to the original show but simplify it too much and you will not get the number of viewers you want. Right now, it bothers me on how Magneto's face looks with or without his helmet.
I like the way this show looks but Rogue and Storm costumes were always awful in that series. Rogue should have been in the majority green suit with the hoodie.That yellow and green costume was Always awful. And that Portacio drawn Tina Turner looking costume is great on the iconic rocker but not on Storm. Is she a heroine or is she about to go on the stage.
Imagine trying to make a change and better the designs and keep the guys looking ripped and in shape and have the ladies with this one dull body type? I don't get it. Because the new artist don't want to the women to look too "Sexual" They come up with a lack of detail in outfits and back outfits. The OG designs was perfect. It showed detail in the body of the characters but the talent from the artist and what they could do. Don't be scared to do some whacky outfits or show some details in the abs , butt, neck, chest and thighs. Once people started to worry about the wrong things in art it went down hill. Bring back the times when things was free and we just admiring the art and skills
Limitations? They have less limitations. There are more color options. There is AI for things like interpolation. There are gradient brushes. There is even things like grease pencil. We see what anime studios are doing with animation. An episode of anime cost 100k. An episode in the US cost about 2 million. Limitations?

The OG X-Men TAS designs wasn't problematic. It was almost perfect. Granted it takes longer to draw, but the upside is it's more comic accurate and more pleasing to watch. I don't mind waiting a year or 2 for a new season, as long as it's near or looks like the old design. The new one X-Men 97's designs on the other hand are crap. It feels stiff and cheap. Somehow the older style looks fresher even if you watch it in 240p compared to the new shit digital cartoon designs even on 1080p or 4k. The new show is crap. Designs, dialogue, pacing is shit.

The animation is choppy with very few frames. We are in 2024 people, one would have expected to surpass the original by a lot, but that was not the case. We'll see, there is always someone in the world that can edit it or make it better somehow.

The punk mohawk fitted the style of the her dystopian outfit her fashion was cyber ugly on purpose. She still wears her normal costume in 97 there was no need to give her a mohawk. I was alive in 97' Mohawks were not in fashion then.

I actually did a video on the animation of X-men 97. I think we’re eventually going to get the reveal of the role 3D models play in this show.

There was nothing wrong with it. It makes cyclops colors pop more and it fixed cyclops long as head changing a lot.

Actually computer animation 3D and 2D digital was around during that time but it was still very much niche, and not a mainstream production tool for animated series. Just to be clear here. Apple nor Pixar created computer animation, though it is true that the first full length 3d computer animated film was indeed Pixars Toy Story. In 1996. But the tools and their developers had been around decades prior.
So that’s why the animation was so good at the beginning and then the last season, the animation sucked. It was too detailed. And that’s why this show’s animation isn’t as good. They tried to make it easier to animate by taking the details out.
You know there is stuff like Ninja Scroll that is just as detailed but have great animation. The Animed Series needed more budget and manpower.

I do miss the detail from the original animation style of the animated series. That and the decision in not allowing Catherine Disher to play Jean Grey

Absolutely hate the ratio aspect. Info was great but the ratio killed it for me.
So far, the only new designs I don’t like are Morph and Magneto’s costume. It’s like they picked the absolute worst outfit Magneto has ever worn, lol. I really think they would have been better off with the white one instead. As for Morph, first, he needs a fucking normal name like Scott and Logan, and secondly I have no idea what possessed these people to use such a cringey doppelgänger type look for him. It makes him look more like a villain than X-Man, especially when he’s using it while not “on duty”. I think someone compared it to Voldemort and they are right on the money.
The only other thing, so far, that bothers me are the characters’ eyes. Their pupils always appear to be dilated, like they’re all heavily coked up or something and I find it makes certain close-ups very weird. Like especially that close-up shot of Magneto when he’s talking about the Will. He looks high.
Magneto's costume is from the comics and was used in the same trial as '97 thus why they used it. I do agree with you about Morph using the blank face as it just makes him look like Caliban (whom I thought that was the case when they first announced '97 since Jubilee knows him) or Chameleon from Spider-Man.

Technically Morph has a real name, Kevin Sydney, they just never referenced it in the original show and so far haven't referenced it in '97 as of episode 3.
I have gripes with the animation, but I like the X-men 97 designs.

Dunno if it was intended or not but the only thing this video has managed to prove is that modern artists suck balls at drawing and fancy digital tools won't make up for their lack of talent. The old designs were perfect, while the new ones all look flat and lack detail in comparison.
THEY STREAMLINED IT FOR A REASON. The OG X-Men show was great but the animations were extremely stiff. And it doesn't help that they were working with close deadlines. The reason why 97 streamlined the designs is so that animation becomes easier and the animators can focus more on making the movement feel natural and lifelike rather than so much detail in the drawings that to save cost the movement would need to be stiffer

Grew up watching this along with Batman: TAS, Spider-Man: TAS, and The Tick... what an unbelievable level of quality on display within these shows. It’s too bad she couldn’t find the balance she was looking for. While the new animation is far superior the over simplification of the designs is pretty jarring and not a good look. So far though the stories have somewhat offset the bad design choices that were made.
This is the kind of passion Marvel truly needs back to their workflow. X-Men '97 is a love letter to the original show and it respects the source material.

Not quite. In anime the backgrounds look realistic but the characters faces are often simple. Depending on the show characters can go off model for a joke.
You gotta pay attention to animes more, designs are pretty simple over there too. Not as simplified as the west but still simple enough to make the job easier. You'll never see overly detailed animes unless two conditions are met. They have enough money to pay animators more to add in such detail and if the animators have enough time. Otherwise, it'll never happen

unfortunately it doesn't look like the original at all. The simplifying has completely removed the essence of the original and made it look modern. I watched that show as a child in the 90s and it's absolutely epic. They don't animate like that anymore in the US and it shows
People don't animate like that anymore because the tons of details in the old designs create tons of problems for workflow. It's just animation 101. The current design, imo, is the best compromise between detail and workability.
The designs look the same to me, plus the new animation is so much more energetic and fast paced. I like it🤷♂️

The new ones look flat and lose a ton of detail, and look way less sexy for both female and male characters.
Way to take away all of the lines that would make any of the characters actually look attractive. No more ripped muscles or curvy sexy shapes. Guess everything has to be flat and ugly these days.

I find it ironic that some hand draw anime looks really dated on certain shows and movies and only reason to come back to it was the stories when the U.S. cartoons Like X-Men, Batman and Spider-Man are just artistic with almost every frame with great stories. But now anime has better art with 2D animation where the U.S. are becoming the questionable ones. Hell, for BTAS(Batman The Animated Series) when they shifted Art styles is noticeable, especially with Joker (God what were they thinking?), then another style change when Justice Leage came along but it improved version 2 of Batman. Now to get to my point because I should just make a video about style change for Batman alone. It's ok to simplify the animation in comparison to the original show but simplify it too much and you will not get the number of viewers you want. Right now, it bothers me on how Magneto's face looks with or without his helmet.

I like the way this show looks but Rogue and Storm costumes were always awful in that series. Rogue should have been in the majority green suit with the hoodie.That yellow and green costume was Always awful. And that Portacio drawn Tina Turner looking costume is great on the iconic rocker but not on Storm. Is she a heroine or is she about to go on the stage.
Imagine trying to make a change and better the designs and keep the guys looking ripped and in shape and have the ladies with this one dull body type? I don't get it. Because the new artist don't want to the women to look too "Sexual" They come up with a lack of detail in outfits and back outfits. The OG designs was perfect. It showed detail in the body of the characters but the talent from the artist and what they could do. Don't be scared to do some whacky outfits or show some details in the abs , butt, neck, chest and thighs. Once people started to worry about the wrong things in art it went down hill. Bring back the times when things was free and we just admiring the art and skills

The OG X-Men TAS designs wasn't problematic. It was almost perfect. Granted it takes longer to draw, but the upside is it's more comic accurate and more pleasing to watch. I don't mind waiting a year or 2 for a new season, as long as it's near or looks like the old design.
The new one X-Men 97's designs on the other hand are crap. It feels stiff and cheap. Somehow the older style looks fresher even if you watch it in 240p compared to the new shit digital cartoon designs even on 1080p or 4k.
The new show is crap. Designs, dialogue, pacing is shit.

The new animation is cheap overseas dogshit. Looks worse than DC animation which is trash. Looks like they used less cells per second to save money. The characters are so stiff. It’s cheap looking and lazy. Everything they say like minimize movement etc, is just them being cheap and using less animation cells and frames to save money. Sad thing is they are trying to justify it as an art style. They shouldn’t try to reinvent the wheel, just animate show just like they did 30 years ago . The punk mohawk fitted the style of the her dystopian outfit her fashion was cyber ugly on purpose. She still wears her normal costume in 97 there was no need to give her a mohawk. I was alive in 97' Mohawks were not in fashion then.
