Niguse and The Red Terror

  • In 2016, Ethiopian-American actor David Samuel was completing his MFA in Acting at Brown University, when he learned that he had an uncle (on his mother’s side) that was killed in Ethiopia in the late 1970s, during a period of time known as The Red Terror.
Inspired by what he learned, David began imagining how he could tell his uncle’s story and began raising money to film this project, with local Providence filmmaker Alex Laferriere.
After a successful campaign, they spent ten days in Addis Ababa and Gondar interviewing a few of Niguse’s family members who were willing to speak about these traumatic events.
Using a mixture of found footage from home videos, audio diaries recorded during filming, and music from David Samuel’s solo show, “Away You Ethiop”, and his musical project, KINGOFAXUM, Niguse and The Red Terror explores what grief looks like when you don’t get a chance to mourn, and what it means to find a home in the midst of sorrow.
    Thank you for watching.

Yishak had so much wisdom to share. I was planning on only starting the film and finishing it up later on. But mann, I was unable to press pause because the story pulled me in so much. Loved this & thank you for carrying the story through🙏🏾 God bless your family

A fascinating story. My father is from Eritrea, his brother was involved with higher ranking members of the ELF and eventually escaped to Saudi Arabia. Once again, great film.

This was really beautiful and painful to watch. I’m so proud of you David and so thankful that you had the passion and drive to finish this. Thank you for memorializing not only Neguse’s story but the family members whose words and voices we never want to forget.

The Mengistu Haile Mariam Derg (military based 'communists') mostly killed other oppositional civilian communist (EPRP)/'communist' (Meison, Waz League, etc.) groups.

The Red Terror didn’t go on until 1987 it went on between 1977&78. People have been killed before and after the Red-Terror, but please stick to the fact and don’t dramatize the tragedy.

David, this is a true story that took place in our family, particularly in the life of your uncle, Niguse, before you were born. I sincerely thank you for listening to this story, visiting the place with your uncle Yesehak, speaking with those who were there at the time, and sharing it with this generation. Many young people, who were the future of the country, were slaughtered back then, and I appreciate that you allowed me to revisit the past and reflect on it. Additionally, Yesehak expressed his desire to see this story written in a book during his lifetime, but he didn’t get the chance to see it happen. I am confident that you will fulfill your uncle’s wish and have this story published. God bless you!

My condolences to Neguse’s family and others who lost their loved ones during that dark era. The youth always needs to consult and take advice from seniors ! That’s where wisdom resides.

Thank you David for immortalizing the story of Nigussu Girma's and all the young people who perished during the Derg regime. I am a friend of the family and know very well the story you presented. I faintly remember Nigussu's light skinface and his well built posture. Adey Letemariam looked just like i remember her som 30+ years ago. A strong mother figure and loving neigbour. Genet and Azeb too but i don't see my guardian and protector Berhane in this clip. I and my two friends were also imprisoned in Bahta prison, Gonder and learned from inmates about the grussom killing acts of MelakuTeffera. A chilling moment, remember it as if it was just yesterday.

Thank you for this. Though I'm Oromo, my father fled Ethiopia and also lost siblings during this period of time. It's an important part of our collective history that is very difficult to talk about. Kudos.
