  • This episode of Grounded takes a look at Air Southwest, a regional airline for the South West of England owned by & headquartered at Plymouth Airport. Beginning operations in 2003 and being merged into Eastern Airways in 2011 this is the story of the plucky little airline that could...
Air Southwest (officially known as Air South West Limited) operated a fleet of five Dash-8 turboprops from bases at Plymouth, Newquay & Bristol to destinations including Manchester, Leeds, London, Dublin, Cork and seasonal ski flights to Grenoble.
If you like hearing about little regional airlines then I suggest checking out my episode on Gill Airways who were considered "The North East's own airline", that episode is here: • Grounded: Gill Airways

Thank you so much for this. I am making a video going through the history of Plymouth city Airport, and this video, along with the brymon airways video, have given me a lot of information about the airport, Your channel will be linked in the description as a source, much appreciated again!

Thanks, I'm glad to help :) Let me know when you've done so I can take a look as it sounds interesting :) If you need them I might still have a load of their financial records (the airport).

@@ExpoAviation Thanks for your response, any more info would be helpful. As the history of that airport is quite hard to find! Your help would be much appreciated

As a former employee of Air Southwest I compliment you on the story you told..Balanced and fair. The tale around Plymouth Airport, Sutton Harbour and the want to use the land for development is a whole other chapter. It was a great airline to work for and made up of the previous Brymon/BA staff. We also picked up a lot of rugby charter work and we’re about to take a Dash8-200 for this, only the deal got cancelled, after the ferry crew had left the uk

Thank you, I really appreciate that and always love it when folks involved at the airline get in touch :) I really liked Air Southwest, back when I lived right next door to Bristol Airport they were a good way to get back home to Manchester and very reliable too :) It seems that Plymouth isn't the only airport to find itself on the verge of becoming a housing estate, Coventry Airport is now having some of it's land taken for houses (who will then complain about the noise no doubt). I didn't know about the Q200, that could have been interesting :) I really miss Air Southwest, I've still got a Dash-8 model which I bought direct from the airline website :)

I remember Air Southwest, I used to see them at Leeds Bradford until they ceased operations. To be honest, I do miss that livery... simple but good looking.

I miss seeing them about, the livery was nice and they certainly made the purple look better than FlyBe's approach to painting the whole bird up ;)

Indeed, FlyBe’s new livery is even worse! Their two previous liveries are many leagues ahead.

Extremely interesting, especially as I'm into regional airlines. They're a bit similar to my favourite airline Palmair, but very different in most ways. I can't stop watching your 'Grounded' series at the moment! I also never realised that Air Southwest was founded by an airport! (you keep surprising me in factual ways)

Thank you, this was the episode I was hinting at for you a few weeks back but I couldn't confirm it until I'd completed it (as I can and do hit trouble which delays episodes). I'm glad you are enjoying the series and learnt something :)
I am working on Palmair, believe me it is shockingly complicated despite having only had one aircraft. I had started working on that episode earlier this year then hit a few stumbling blocks. I've got that all cleared up now (hopefully) and picked it up again yesterday. With the nature of that airline I am going to have to cover Bath Travel itself too but I am weary of going into too much detail, especially with finances.
I checked out Fly Spiral, they've already been deleted so I'm guessing it was someones college project or something...

Used to fly between Bristol and Manchester frequently. The service was always excellent. It was a great shame when it folded.

Yes, I used them on that route too as it was particularly convenient at the Bristol end given I literally lived next door to the airport. They really were a good airline in both service and reliability, I wish they were still around :/

Air Southwest we're a fantastic little airline,I remember watching the aircraft back in my younger days. Sadly aggressive expansion by Flybe, and little interest in the airline by Eastern killed them off.

They sure were, and handy for me too when I was living in Bristol (literally across the road from the airport) as it made the monthly trip to Manchester easier ;) It is a shame how it all went to pot though no fault of their own :/

Great vlog as always! I tried to find the airport on the map, no way. Now I know, thanks to you! I miss DA and BY. DA flew to Norway for many yrs. The early 80s they started a route, LGW-MAN,NCL, FBU v.v. with a Bea 146. BY and BU had a 767 simulator together in the beginning. I also remember BHX exc airways. They flew BHX-GOT-FBU-BHX. I think they went belly up, and started again the same routes now under the name BHX European Airways with the same BAC 1-11.

Thank you, I appreciate that :) From what I understand BHX Exec rebranded to BHX European but eventually merged with Brymon though part of the new group split off and went bust, the other parts of Brymon ended up with BA and eventually FlyBe (or at least that's what I think off the top of my head). BY Nordic's origins were with Transwede, an interesting airline that I am hoping to cover soon :)
