  • Plymouth City Airport Closed in December 2011.
Plymouth Opened its very own Airport officially in 1931, over the following 90 years the site has grown gaining two tarmac runways, several aircraft hangars, a very modern arrival and departure lounge, flying schools, fuel facilities and a very up to date control tower.
The airport site has now been retained in the Plymouth Plan for Aviation and cannot have houses built on the site.
The main runway remains in excellent condition and could open for general aviation without any further expenditure.
There are strong moves by a commercial group with the financial backing and expertise to open the airport.
Many Thanks to all contributors for the drone footage.

From my bedroom window in Plymouth in the late 50's, I used to watch Tiger Moths operating from the airfield. Then in the 60's as an ATC cadet, I flew air experience flights in DH Chipmunks from Plymouth. I remember one Plymouth air show when an RAF Vulcan did an amazing low level display right over the crowd when the ground literally shook! Wouldn't be allowed today! Would be great to see the airport operational again.

Thanks Kevin it would be very helpful to Bolt Head visitor's to have a diversion close by and good spot for fuel, the landing fee needs to be GA friendly.

Wow !! Can’t believe how derelict Plymouth Airport has become in the 10 years since we kept and flew our aircraft from there - lets hope it open up soon before it’s too late and would need an unobtainable amount of monies to revive it - As usual Chris a super informative video - MANY THANKS 😊

@@GULLPERCHFLYER brilliant video Chris. It’s also helped me put the finishing touches to the airport. I’ve developed a keen interest in the airport since taking on this project. Will be a great day for Plymouth if it reopens. I would very much like to be a part of that. I’m going to pay a visit tomorrow. Is there any access to the field?

Fond memories of arriving into Plymouth from London after a very long flight from Australia to visit my family in Cornwall, in the 80s & 90s on Brymon then later BA . Quite astounded when I heard it had closed, how could a city of that size do such a thing. I particularly recall a thrilling night arrival via Newquay, force 8 gale, the Dash 8 coming in sideways. I hope to hear of it reopening one day. If Cardiff, Exeter, Bristol, Southampton, Bournemouth can turn airports into such valuable assets why can’t Plymouth ?

My local airfield closed a few years ago. It's either going to be dug up by La Farge for construction agregates or filled with high density housing (modern term for slum).
Panshanger was where the output of De Havillands was flown and parked ready for distribution.

Hi Chris,Plymouth without an airport is like trying to fly with one wing as the city attempts to lure development as we hopefully leave Covid behind..I remember airshows there during the fifties and I recall flying from Heathrow on Brymon in a DHC Dash7,The 4 engined stol aircraft we flew to Plymouth via Newquay .Back in the Fifties there were quite a few Austers and Tiger moths which offered pleasure flights.I hope efforts to restore services are successful .It would be great to see it capable of handling aircraft of 737type or similar .
    Excellent vlog.
    Take care Cheers from Canada

Well done for your efforts in creating this! Looking to the future, and our environmental targets we will probably see fewer large aircraft connecting hub airports and more frequent, lower capacity aircraft running of electric engines direct from small regional airports, etc. In my opinion, even if Plymouth had been seen by some to not have a future back then it certainly does have in the next chapter of aviation. It's more likely we can run electric on twin otters and small dash 8 sized aircraft than the larger a320/737 sized aircraft anyway. Maybe this presents an opportunity for Plymouth to role model the way small regional airports can bring back value.

Looking at the last few minutes of the post it shows housing/warehouses/buildings very close to the end of each runway. Having flown in/ out there on a couple of occasions it was always a concern, Efato where are we going. I think any attempt to re-open would meet with much opposition from residents.

Main runway end housing not changed the airport can reopen for GA without problems, local residents have always complained no change there.

The biggest mistake Plymouth City Council did was trusting Sutton Harbour Holdings and giving them a long term 100 year lease. I would argue it's probably a breach of contract but the council don't have the money to fight them and so are reliant on the good will of SHH to return the airport back to them. What a shame! It would be great to have the runway extended to allow Flybe and Aer Lingus regional to serve.
We also had that big scam of FlyPlymouth who I had my suspicions about from the start and then suddenly all went quiet.

I was a Plymouth lad who lived in the northern suburb of Whitliegh. So familiar we’re the previously mentioned chipmunks of the Britannia Flight. Sky and doing the Channel Islands runs and latterly Brymon. Certainly remember walking to Roborough in the late 60’s early 70’s for full blown air shows. I remember the walk down the country lane past a farm on the approaches to the airfield. Not lived in Plymouth for many years but was very sad many years ago to see it inactive. All a bit built up around it now of course. Is there a market for reopening it? Have any operators expressed an interest? Thanks for the look around.

Hello Chris . I guess Plymouth shutting was the impetus for your move to Bolt Head ? It hasn't been vandalised as far as l can tell but it will take a few million to make it operational once again ? Who's bright idea was it to shut it in the first place ? Thanks Chris .

Should have built on a new site like the one that was planned for sherford many years ago instead of building houses there they have lost viable land for an airport in Plymouth now houses should have been built on this site at derriford and the sherford site a new airport with a large runway that could be used by 737s /757s etc this would have connected Plymouth with Europe although it would be great to see roborough operating again it’s not viable runway is to small and no room for airport growth sad to think a
City like Plymouth has no decent airlinks

i just found out about this airport, i was flying over dartmoor in xplane11 and needed to get fuel and thought "plymouth is a big city it must have an airport"
at first i thought there was something wrong with xplane when i saw the runways were decommissioned "surely plymouth doesnt have a dead airport in the middle" and then i went down a rabbit hole learning about this poor strip stuck in a frustrating purgatory.
as if plymouths image couldnt get any worse...
i dont care if they reopen it or demolish it i just hope they do something, such a waste to just leave this giant hole in the middle of the city.
and what is it they have against ga aircraft?
they complain about a lack of revenue but refuse anything except airliners full of tourists, its not happening, nobody wants to go to plymouth that badly lol, its plymouth.
ga aircraft could easily save it tho, just look at dunkeswell that field thrives on ga aircraft.
this whole thing is beyond stupid.
