- Changing from 1st to 12th gear in a 02-03 Volvo FM9 300 manual.
Shifter got same patterns in the Volvo FH series too.
It's a 3 speed shifter with split and range buttons giving it a total of 12 regular forward gears and 4 reverse gears.
It also got 2 crawler gears (labeled as C on the shifter). - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

I have driven a FH12 a little bit. When I was driving empty I usually switched like; 2,4,5,6,6^ or 1,3,4,5,6,6^. Of course if you are having the max load of 60t then you have to go trough all the gears. (Yes I'm from Finland ^_^ )
I drove one of these today. Actually a really easy and fun box to drive.

@Playa1sweet In american trucks you still use un-syncronized transmission. Those have to be double-clutched. In some/most conditions you can "float" those transmissions, meaning you can shift without clutching if you rev-match it. We stopped using those 30 years ago here. We use full synchronized, and you have to clutch those. You'd never get over the norwegian mountains alive using a unsync'd transmission.

@ScaniaLV That really depends on how big engine you got, and how the road is. I can usually do 1h->2h->3h->4h->5l->5h->6l->6h or similar if I'm on flat road, while other time I have to use all. The last few days I've been driving a old 1991 Volvo FH12 460 (which feels like it only got 400hp or less), and I had to use every gear starting from 1l when I started on slight uphill with that one. I love how you pre-selected each split, but you knocked her into neutral before changing to high range. And what's a little D9 doing with a 12? I've only seen them with 8 speeds.
that button on the left of the knob changes gear from high to low,so it's like 2 sppeds in one :)

@Vee6watchman I only drove the 300 for a few months some time ago, so I don't really remember too much about it. And we mostly had light loads in it. 2axle boxtruck. Total weight around 20t (10t dry, 10t load) if I remember correctly. No trailer possible.
@ScaniaLV if your stoped on a steep hill and heavy crawler is advisable for setting off to avoid snapping a half shaft if you set off in a higher gear you might get into the dreaded bounce start this normaly results in a loud bang as one of the trucks half shafts snaps under the strain so c is your crawler gear .
@KristianF88 thanks a lot for your answer,now it's clear for me about that C position ;) . Another thing what i dont understand clear is,when you have a load,for example, 24 tons, how do you need to start up driving,i mean how i must shift gears,like in your video,step by step ( 1st low-high,2 low-high and so on) or i can miss some gears ? i know that without load(cargo) you can drive without these steps,but how it's with load (cargo)?

Saw an FM9-380 pulling an extra long 4-axle trailer piled with 1.5m (5 ft) of sand out of a quarry yard. Any idea of the load rating on that ~300 you're driving?
the I-Shift is the same 3 gear gearbox as the manual, with a few adjustments.
@Vee6watchman Every gear shift (including splitter) requires clutch. It's full manual.
@ScaniaLV The C (Crawl/Climb (Not sure about the real definition)) is the really low gear. I've never really had any use for it yet, since 1st/2nd gear is low enough for me when I'm 50 tonnes. I also think it's possible to split the C gear, but then again, as I said, never really used it, so I don't know. I'll try it if I remember when I'm back in a truck on monday :)
It's very simple, the side button is a splitter. you shift 1 lo, 1 hi on the splitter, continue to 2, same thing. then to 3 , same thing. the front button is range selector, flip it up, shift back to 1 which is now 4. shift 4 lo, 4 hi etc. there are also 2 deep reduction gears that can only be used in low range. reverse has 4 choices.

Nice gearshift action... Every gear shift including through the splitter requires clutch actuation or is this a semi-automated clutch?
From what I've seen, I'd say 60-80% of all new trucks are automatic. The automatic gearboxes are so smart nowadays (especially Volvos I-Shift), so you got pretty much same control as in a manual.

The i-shifts are manual transmissions underneath all the wizardry. The only difference between an older manual is that clutch and gear selection are computer controlled.
There's a factory video on here somewhere. They say to only use the splitter in high range

strange, i wanted one, but dealer said it could not be delivered, even called sweden and cheked:p, was two years ago:p but know some 600 manual was sold:)
Calling it a gear or half gear is all a personal taste. Volvo calls it a 'full gear' themself on their I-Shift transmission. When I'm talking to someone in the truck with me when I'm driving, and they ask what gear, I say "4 hi", "6 low" or similar. Or sometimes I just say 8 or 11.

When you change split from low to high, do you need to press clutch ? Same question for low and high range...
Yes, you need to press clutch for using both the buttons, and for moving the stick. European transmissions are regular synchronized which means clutch has to be used.
Yes, you can also prepare the range in front while in gear, it will only change gearbox then you put the stick in neutral
KristianF88 you are right but don't forget you can also float your gears, I dunno how they'd work for a splitter tho I'd imagine you'd have to depress the clutch for that one but you'd still be able to float the gears for every other change if you aren't using the splitter
I don't know about floating gears down, but I've heard that you can float a splitter like that. Just stay in the gear, don't move to neutral, and let off of the accelerator. After the transmission is no longer in a bind or under load from the engine, it will shift.
Volvo transmission - the finest and best. Should always be working behind a Volvo engine for best results.

bom na verdade ele quis só mostrar como é feito a troca de marchas da caixa baixa para alta usando todas as marchas reduzidas sendo que o botão frontal usa para transferência de caixa e o botão lateral para marchas reduzidas só.

I'm sorry, but the Split is not a full gear, you only have 6 gears on that transmission with High/Low split on each of the 6 gears.

fully synced boxes, just dont blow up the engine and you can chose any gear you want:) just as a normal car.
What is the switch on the left side for?
Left switch is "split", front switch is "range". Split changes between high and low gear (splits a gear in half (1low, 1high, 2low, 2high etc)), while range swaps between high and low range (1 becomes 4, 2 is 5 etc etc)

but the correct way of saying it is half and full gears. I-Shift is a automatic gearbox and has noting to do with Volvos maual gearbox. I-Shift is computer controlled.

Are american transmisions are simple 10 in 5th gear bout to go to 6th gear flip the switch and you are good till 10th/ 13 gear no problem up to 6th flip the switch your good till 13th/ 18 gear no problem 6th gear flip the switch your good till (of course spliting your gears forgot that) but split them then thats it[the ^ stands for Split high range] 1 1^ 2 2^ 3 3^ 4 4^ 5 5^ 6 6^ Switch your ranges 7 7^ 8 8^ 9 9^ thats it simple And somebody corect me if im wrong

@joshorobo It's probably since you got a red top. I heard those trucks with red tops go faster than those with yellow tops. On a more serious note; You don't know what truck I drive, or what engine I got. Gearing makes a big difference too. And the weight can be anything from nothing to heavy. We don't give a fuck about who is faster here. All we care about is if we can get up or not. Come back and write something more usefull once you've grown older than 14yrs and know something about trucks..
