  • A quick, basic guide to using a 16 speed manual gearbox in a (Daf) truck. This one’s a ZF box with both a range change & a splitter though the principles are the same for most range change & splitter operations. Take into account things will differ slightly according to manufacturer, terrain, load & power output.

    Excellent demo. With all the automatics nowadays it's great to see a proper gearjamner. My Dad's been trucking since the 60's and has had a manual R Series since 05.

    We used to rent from a company that had old Freightliner 24-foot box trucks with big assed diesel engines in them and split shifters on them. Just the two range ones. I could never get the hang of it. I always drove them in either high or low range. This is actually a four-range transmission. I am amazed he can keep it all together when he's driving without some form of display telling him what gear he's in. But that's why he's the professional truck driver and I'm a commenter on a TH-cam comments page. Much respect to you sir and thanks for making the video.
    Just so everyone knows, modern clean diesels run catalytic converters and an extra fluid called DEF, diesel exhaust fluid, that is injected into the catalytic chamber to fully process the diesel exhaust. Those diesel catalytic chambers are not like the ones on your car. They run way hotter and they do an amazing job of processing diesel fumes. Of course, those who hate diesel never want you to know that. The warning you are seeing on the dash is the catalytic converter system asking for a standard maintenance regen procedure to help maximize the efficiency of the diesel catalytic system. Most diesels will do this automatically but occasionally they drive you crazy with the warning light until the regen is done either automatically or manually.
    Modern diesels are truly amazing engines. I wish people were told the truth about how truly clean they run because modern diesel engines are truly awesome engines.
    One last warning though about these modern diesel engines. If you are ever driving one to move your house or large objects, never - ever run them dry of diesel fuel. The catalytic converters run very hot, and they actually require that diesel be run in them to keep them cool enough to survive the conversion process. If you run the truck out of diesel dry, with the engine running, the converters will overheat and simply cook their insides. I was told by the rental company my company used to get our trucks from, that it is a ten-thousand-dollar mistake to run a diesel truck empty. Just don't do it.
    I cannot stress too much how clean these modern diesels run. My lungs are toast and very sensitive to any pollution and I could stand right next to our trucks running all day with no lung discomfort. Simply amazing engines.
    Tell me why I shouldn't idle my truck when it's ten degrees Fahrenheit, freezing outside or 100 degrees Fahrenheit broiling outside and 140 degrees Fahrenheit in the back of my truck, absolutely cooking.
    Clean diesels let you do that safely.

    I learn to drive in a D series Ford with a 2 speed axle. Progressed to a Leyland Bison with 9 speed range change, then a number of other Leyland's all with crash boxes and eventually into the best truck i had at the time an F reg DAF95 with the gearbox you are showing. Brilliant box once you got used to it. Cheers Colin

    In the early 2000's I did some trucking, one of the trucks I drove was a Renault Magnum. It had a Mack engine and ZF gearbox.
    The gearbox was a nightmare, really. The splitter worked as you showed, it was fine, but the high/low was manual too. To shift from high to low or low to high, you had to do it manual. From low to high, you had to push the stick hard to the right in neutral, and you would feel when you “broke” the resistance, and you were in high.
    It was very wobbly and unreliable, so the risk was that it had not changed to high as intended and 5th would be 1st. Once we 2 drivers on the truck and my colleague used a “karate” punch to get it in high. I tried that, it worked better. We named it the “karate gearbox”. A real pain, literally.
    The Renault had some few faults, but the cabin was by far the best at the time. It was huge, you could have a party in there, and dance. I had several Volvo and Scania truckers in the cab, they wanted to see it. You could see they wanted such a cabin on their trucks too. Shortly thereafter all trucks got a big cabin. I believe MAN was next in line to make a big cabin with a flat floor.
    After the Magnum I drove Volvo, it was a breeze with the gearbox. Volvo had electric/pneumatic shifting on splitter and range since the 70's. I believe it was at the time Volvo introduced I-shift, many drivers was opposed to automatic, but when they got their new Volvo I-shift, they were delighted. No more stomping with the left foot.
    Happy driving from a retiree.

    When I took my test in 91, my instructor told me to baffle the examiner with science and show him I could use the gearbox. When we got back, the examiner more or less gave me a bol**** ing for using all the gears saying I didn't need to do that because I wasn't carrying any weight. ( crazy ) . Enjoying the vlogs.

    Back in the 80's I drove a Daf 2800 Turbo Intercooling with a Fuller 13 speed regulary and a Steyr 1291 occassionally with ZF Ecosplit 16 speed but I liked the DAF and especially the Fuller transmission the most.

    When I did my Class 1 (CE) training back in 2009, I learned in a 8 speed (4 over 4) without a splitter. One of the things that struck me was how close the low ratios (1 to 4) were to each other. Once you are in high range (5 to 8) you have a spacing more like what you are used to in a car or a van. I'd imagine that you'd only ever use the splitter in low range to make a 1.5 shift where a block change between 2 whole gears might be too much for the load / gradient.

    • @The_Breeze1
      @The_Breeze1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Raithrover & thanks for checking in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏽. The lower ratios are still fairly close even with a splitter so 2/3 to start off then 4-5-6-7 low 7 hi 8 lo & top usually works well for me 😃

    If I want to go down from 8L to 7H when should I switch the splitter to High? When I'm still in the 8th gear position or when I move the gear lever to the 7th gear position ?

    • @The_Breeze1
      @The_Breeze1  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mate, you can pre-select both range & split as it doesn’t activate until the clutch is depressed. So, in 8L flick splitter to high & when ready depress the clutch whilst moving stick to 7 & Hi will select all in one go. Smooth like butter 😉. Good question & thanks for watching mate 👍🏽

    I’m confused why u need to push in the clutch to activate the gear split on this transmission. I’m from America and on all our 18/13 speeds all that is to split is coming on and off the throttle to allow revs to drop to next gear.
