    This was a tricky video to make as there are lots of different theories on how to define personality and on what is considered a personality trait, but the key points that I wanted to make and that you should take away from this video are:
    1. No personality test can consistently predict athletic performance.
    2. Certain traits are shared among high level athletes and will help you on your journey to mastery (mental toughness, discipline, commitment, etc as mentioned in video). These traits can be developed through active efforts if you currently lack them.
    3. Because of #1, do not feel compelled to copy the negative, immoral or unfavorable mannerisms that some athletes display (aggression, narcissism, cockiness, unsportsmanlike behaviours, etc). These things will NOT make you a better athlete. For example, you can be both confident and humble (rather than cocky) - Steph Curry is a great example of this.
    4. Basically, besides developing the sport specific traits that are relevant to improving at your sport, there is no need to try and become someone you are not - so I encourage you to be humble, be authentic and be kind to both yourself and others on your journey to mastery :)

    Just discovered your videos and love your approach. I am a PE teacher and Football (soccer) coach and have a real interest in sports psychology.
    Have you done a video on 'self-talk'? I find it a really interesting mental skill which can be utilised to improve confidence and benefit all of the 4 C's (commitment, confidence, control of emotions and concentration) and would love to hear your thoughts on it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

    • @masteryblueprint_
      @masteryblueprint_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't realize that the email was also a comment, so I will post my response to you here just in case others were also interested:
      I have not done an in-depth study of self-talk yet, however, I am vaguely familiar with 2 strategies:
      1. Name it to tame it
      2. Optimism / explanatory style
      Martin Seligman does work on optimism and explanatory style. It relates to how we explain obstacles and negative events to ourselves (so this would related to commitment, self-efficacy (confidence), and control of emotions).
      Name it to tame it is a cognitive behavioural therapy strategy that helps with controlling emotions. I think it would be inappropriate if I tried to explain it because I don’t have enough experience. Counselling psychologists would have more experience with this strategy.
      I hope those are some good avenues where you will be able to do some of your research and find some strategies that you can use.

      It's not about looking a certain way, it's about being a certain way. Humility is an important trait. We should strive to be less egocentric and more humble.

    • @masteryblueprint_
      @masteryblueprint_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I think I tried to include too much for this video. The main takeaways from the video are:
      1. You don't need to be cocky to succeed. There are countless confident and humble world-class athletes, and you should strive to emulate them.
      2. You can still reach the pinnacle of your sport even if you get very anxious before competitions (example of George Sainte Pierre - You can learn strategies to overcome fear and anxiety).

    Elite athletes learn how to adapt their behaviours to the situation at hand.
    There are elite performers in every endeavour with every kind of personality trait. You need to define the difference between personality and behaviour. Behaviours are adaptable. . Personality is not.

    • @masteryblueprint_
      @masteryblueprint_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with the first and second statement (That elite athletes adapt behaviors and that there are elite performers with varying personalities - in fact, that was largely the point of the video, my bad if I could not get that message across clear enough). I don't agree with your third point, however.
      I'm not sure what theory or definition you are using to define personality (this would be important to clarify). If we use the big 5 - which has lots of scientific support - meta analyses have shown that roughly 50% of each dimension is heritable and 50% environment (can be changed). My point is that personality is changeable. Intuitively, by changing (or adapting) our behaviours, we change our personalities.
      Again, please send me any studies or research that would disprove this argument. Cheers

    The major thing that stuck out to me in this video, was that from all of the many given examples from kids to elite athletes, there are NO WOMEN in this video. The content itself is useful but would be better without a gender bias.

    • @masteryblueprint_
      @masteryblueprint_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My TH-cam audience consists 85% male and 15% female. TH-cam promotes videos based on retention, thus I need to make videos that best speak to this audience. I personally have no bias, it is simply a matter of what will actually be seen on TH-cam
