I stumbled upon your video in search of a DIY option for fixing my Samsung S8 not charging, or providing data access via the USB C port. I looked at my port, under a strong light and could not see any dust! It seriously looked "normal". But just as you described; it was definitely there. It was just so compressed it looked like it was part of the surface of the inner wall of the port. I followed your advice and directions and it worked PERFECTLY for me! Thank you for saving me the cost of having that port needlessly replaced! I am now a subscriber!
Just wanted to add: I found many videos like this one devoted to providing solutions to technical problems when I was trying to troubleshoot my problem. I chose your channel as the one to communicate with because of your clear, thorough, and detailed method of communicating. I've been doing IT since DOS 5.0 was brand new, one of my first jobs in the field was for IBM doing repairs on ThinkPads, and as we say in the hood, game recognizes game. You provide the facts and only the facts, you present them in the order that best helps a non-technical person learn and understand, that also avoids wasting the time of someone who does know the subject matter (no small feat!), and your only detours into errata are timely and brief enough that they do not overwhelm or confuse. You'd do well as a technical writer, which is a rare and in-demand skill, and a pretty well-paying job the last time I looked into it. Great job.
I was about to purchase a new USB-port and started stressing out about my phone still not holding the charging cable (I've used rubber bands to clamp the charger in place for the last six months) in place, even with the bands, and then I saw this video. Thank you so much, fine sir! You've saved my 3 year old Huawei P20, which is good as new after using a shaved toothpick. You're my hero of 2021!
I cannot tell you enough. Thank you. Ive spent years in the tech industry and yet, even I still need help with things like this. You're seriously a king
The only problem with your solution is that it left me feeling like an idiot for not thinking of it myself. Seems kind of obvious, but I guess it's not. Worked perfectly on my PIxel 3. Thanks!!!
This video just avoided me throwing away my phone! Even warp charging again (that stopped happening a while ago). THANK YOU!! Makes so much sense too... engineer in electronics here and like comments below, I feel like an idiot about not thinking of it. That modified toothpick thing is GENIUS! Loosened the lint with some isopropyl alcohol.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! You just saved me $200! What sucks is not finding you before I spent hundreds of dollars replacing my JBL speakers when all it took was a can of compressed gas.
Just wanted to say thanks. This guide saved me from having to replace my Samsung S10. I used a wooden toothpick and managed to clean out lots of pocket lint. Charging port works better than ever now.
There was little easily visible dirt in my micro-USB socket, so I was less than optimistic. But then I patiently dug around for about 10 minutes with the recommended plastic tool, as if in a mine, and to my amazement, new material kept appearing - deposits from years of being in my trouser pocket. Finally, I looked at the plug of the charging cable, and it too turned out to be a culprit. I had already decided to stop using the mobile phone - charging had become a pain because it only worked when I used both hands to enable charging. Often I asked myself: Is this long phone call worth the charging agony? Yet this is just my back-up and hiking phone, which I rarely switch on. It is always very satisfying to get something working again with a simple intervention. So thank you for this and the older instructions I found before I went mining!
Thanks for this, very useful. I've just determined that the problem with my phone's USB C port was compacted lint. After turning it off (a very important step), I've just used a very fine sewing needle to work away at the compacted lint and clear it away. The port works fine now.
Woow Thank you sir you've saved my pocket I was about to spend money to replace the micro USB port.. but after applying what you did in this video my phone's micro USB port became new as if I just bought my phone.. thank you again :D
Thank you so much, I had a keyboard that just went past it return window and I was worried it would be a loss. I did the plastic tab thing on a USB-c port and I was able to dig something out!
Oh my god you beautiful man, you just saved my phone thank you! I tried blowing in it before but never would have guessed just how compacted it was, there was tons in there!
glad i bought a exacto knife recently, i trimmed down a toothpick so i could get all the lint out, spent a good 30 minutes cleaning my phone out, i held a flashlight in my mouth so i could see everything. Im finally able to stick the charger all the way in my phone again.
Thank you and Google blessed me by sending me to a very well spoken and detailed video and I've subscribed and looking forward to seeing what other simple fixes I'll be able to fix !
Thank you for this i will now get my vape pods and 5 fons and speakers and try to fix them all at once. I was gonna throw them away. I guess we need ro find a way to cover theses ports to avoid build up lint and debris
Okay, I've got one here that's really got me stumped. I'm having the problem you describe in this video, that is, a loose charging cord connection that is easily demonstrable by the mere effect of gravity, and a phone that won't charge as a result. It's an Android A71, it uses a USB-C style connector, I can't observe any visual impaction in the connector socket, in fact it looks remarkably clean, but my eyes aren't what they used to be, and there is a definite rocking motion observable when the connector is pressed firmly into the port. The connector seems to want to list to one side at an obtuse angle more than it does on the other. I've tried using a different cord, I've constructed a cleaning tool using your clever little teardrop design out of that damnable but indestructible clamshell packaging that takes an act of Congress to get into, and I've used a plastic toothpick of the type that flips out of the handle of a single use disposable dental flossing tool. I've recovered no debris or lint, and while my eyes may be deceiving me since I'm pushing 50 these days, it sure as hell looks like it's clear of obstruction. I'm out of ideas here. Got any Hail Marys for me?
While I am tempted to reach for the bottle to drown my sorrows, the vodka I've got is only 80 proof, which means it's not very well suited for my purposes. I'm going to go pick up some isopropanol in a bit and see if that gets anything moving. It's possible the port looks clear because it's so solidly impacted that it's formed a flat surface. That can sometimes happen with earwax, which is the real reason you shouldn't clean your ears with cotton swabs. If it works, I'll report back.
Okay, On my phone, "once", I ran into a scenario where the USB C charge cord end had debris jammed into it! That stopped the plug from going in all the way. You mentioned that you tried another cord. I would verify that the charge cords aren't part of the issue, by plugging them into another USB C port and making that they are snug. Your USB port shouldn't require ANY solvents (just my opinion of course). Please let us know how it went. Good luck!
@@mysimplefix Hey, sorry I took so long getting back to report my findings, I was delayed by a combination of life getting in the way and trying to hunt down this particular page in my history. (Side note, I love Firefox, but its bookmarks are TERRIBLE, my God.) The isopropanol worked! However, it did not present in a way that I've heard of before, so you might want to make note of this one, because it's definitely an edge case. In my situation, there was no substantial debris causing the blockage, so my eyes weren't misleading me. To recap, I was having both a failure of the charging circuit to close, as well as what appeared to be an obstruction in the port socket. I used a feeding bottle for baby animals (I live on a mountain, they're everywhere) to apply enough droplets of isopropanol (91% pure) to fill the socket, let it air dry right side up, that is, port pointing down, then repeated this process upside-down. This was so that any runoff that got into the case wouldn't have gunk in it, and to ensure that all contact surfaces were adequately covered. It fixed both problems like magic. All I can figure is that some sort of thin, non-conductive liquid had dried and was covering the contacts and making the connector fit in too stiffly. I do a lot of work outdoors, so I often get covered in tree sap and all sorts of other mysterious substances, so I can only guess that some of that got in there. Again, at no point did I recover any physical debris such as lint. Whatever was doing it was invisible and insubstantial. Put this one in your case files, because it was an oddity.
My work pants pockets fill my charging port with debris continuously. I need to clean out my phone's charging port about once every 2 months. The interval will vary depending on what the environment is.
I’ve been trying to fix my rig headset with a micro usb because the charger is loose and it won’t charge and I looked into the charging port but I don’t see any debris and don’t know what to do
If the charging port is a micro USB, and it spends a lot of time in your pocket, it will quite likely have debris in there. I will ask, when you plug the cord into the port, is it going in all the way to the bottom? If not, there likely is debris stuck between that small tab and the inner wall of the charge port. As described in the video, that debris needs to be carefully swept out. Don't bend the tab in the port!
Should just slap a small strip of contact paper over it. Just thought of that.if you get a sheet it'll last you forever. Yeah it would be a pain in the ass to keep changing it out but beats having to deal with a dysfunctional port
I just got a new phone it's the first phone I have had with USB c and fast charging and it charges fine when plugged into fast charge brick but when I plug the usb c charger into a regular old school usb plug like in a car or older computer it says its charging but just slowly dies anyone know why? Thanks
Old USB ports like in laptops were only good for 500 milliamps. New phones need at least two amps, which is 2,000 milliamps or more. I actually did a video on that a long time ago that you might get something out of. It describes your situation. th-cam.com/video/aghjvzOXc8Q/w-d-xo.html
The C is male type of pins. Lightning is female type. Micro USB A has the most but micro A with B does not have many. For Samsung Galaxy S5, it has micro A with B and it has charger USB cap for protection. I stay using Samsung Galaxy S5 to use charging cap to protect not to get moisture dust and debris get in and it shows when I disconnect the micro A with B USB cable it shows close the cap. When it is not responding to charge, you need to look at the micro USB, lightning, C pins. When you see nothing from the pins, then it works properly. I also close all my devices using charger cap to stay protected firmly.
I really like the fact that you show very closeup pics of the ports! Very detailed! Thank you!
Me too! :)

Gonna try it out when i arrive at home, you are the only one that has my EXACT problem
Did it work

Wow! Why did you get them so dirty?! :D Toothpick seems the best choice, far better than some other methods suggested on the internet!

I always turn my pockets inside out before washing this helps avoid lint! But the charge cables I get from the £store ($) don't last very long though?
Because they’re from the dollar store, duh
You might try googling that and see if someone has a DIY to fix the issue.
Nicely done! Thank you.
Thanks for you videos they”re helpful 👍🏼✌🏼
Thank you!
Worked!!! Awsome tips! Thanks!
If battery side is broken tgen what can i do i have a stuff on the phone
What happens when the plastic wears out upper and lower ?
The only prevention to this is having a plug, which can easily be found on aliexpress. Or a magnetic charging cable plug.
Truly a lifesaver
Another excellent tutorial Thank you very much!
