  • Hello everyone. This is the Shuman tunnel.
Originally chartered in 1831, the Susquehanna and Little Schuylkill railroad was an early railroad in Pennsylvania. It ran from Tamanend junction in Schuylkill County to Milton PA along the Susquehanna River. It juctioned with the Little Schuylkill railroad which ran from Tamaqu PA to Port Clinton PA.
Construction began in 1835 but was halted in 1837 due to a financial panic. No further construction was done for years until the railroad reorganized as the Catawissa, Williamsport, and Erie railroad in 1849. Construction resumed in 1850 and was completed to Milton PA by 1854.
This tunnel was most likely completed in 1853-1854 and reworked twice by the Reading company in 1915 and again in 1929. This tunnel is in Columbia County PA and is close to state game lands 58. Thank you for watching. 9/3/24

Followed this weeks videos from the Little Starruca Viaduct to your walk through the Catawaissa Tunnel. Loved the adventure. I love finding culverts, the rectangular one was neat.

Hello Burton. These were a lot of fun to do. Getting to the Starrucca viaduct was on my finish before fall list so I'm glad I got that one done.

The "Catty" branch diverged from the Shamokin line at East Mahanoy Junction in Barnesville.

Thanks, Kevin! This is pretty close to my home in Sugarloaf. I've never been to the tunnel; wish I'd known you were in the area.

I didn't even know this was here! Once I saw it I recognized it from other channels. Pretty cool. I have a friend in Zion Grove. That's not to far from you.

2 different date stamps. 1 curved tunnel. 1 rr Explorer. Sittin' here at the nursing home on a rainy afternoon....thanks kevin! You brightened my day! Looks like catawissa is kinda south of the Elmira area?

Good evening Russ. Hope all is well.
The tunnel was an accidental find. Went up there looking for culverts. Found a couple good ones while I was there.
Catawissa is south of Elmira but it's a pretty good distance.

At least not this far up the line. Thanks for the info.

I think there are a couple small bridges along Rt642 between Danville and Milton…. You need to know where to look but it is private property now.

@GeorgeHyland You are absolutely right. There is one really incredible one that crosses the Chillisquaque creek just outside of Potts Grove. Small concrete viaduct then turns into a deck girder. I'm hoping to get some pictures when they cut down the corn.
