What NOT to Do After Mortal Sin

  • Fr. Mark-Mary explains what NOT to do after you commit a mortal sin.
We’ve talked about what you should do after you commit a mortal sin, and that mainly is to get to confession as soon as you can. We are blessed to have the ability to confess our sins in confession, and God’s mercy is so abundant that he will forgive even the worst sins as soon as we ask him to.
There is, however, one common temptation that comes with committing mortal sin, and that’s to repeat the sin just because you have to go to confession anyway. This is exactly what we SHOULDN'T do after mortal sin. This act is known as the sin of presumption, which assumes God will grant you mercy for your sins and should be included in our confession.
Why is the sin of presumption so damaging? It’s because it does exactly what the devil wants us to do after mortal sin. Not only does it assume God will give us a gift that he already gives so generously, but it convinces us to do the same mortal sin again. In the sin of presumption, we take advantage of God because we know how good he is. The devil is always trying to mock the Lord, and the sin of presumption is the ultimate form of mockery against God’s mercy.
The effects of sin are very real, and if we repeat a certain sin over and over again, our passions will start to form an attraction towards this sin, and its temptation will become even stronger. The sin of presumption is one of the devil’s strongest weapons against us, but the sooner we get to confession and become immersed in the Lord’s mercy, the weaker the temptation will be.

I was able to overcome the sin of masturbation but still struggle with pre marital sex. The only sin left that I struggle with. Other temptations are easier to overcome. It took time though, with a few trips and stumble along the way. Now with Covid and most churches closed, we are stuck with mortal sin.

@Kelly Regan If you havent already try fasting along with prayer. You may even relapse the very next day, happened to me, but what Ive found is it will go forward into your future and you will reap the rewards of it. Our Lord said if we fast our Father in Heaven will see it and reward it. It strenghtens the will, which we all need strenghtened to stand firm and sin weakens the will. Always remember you are in a fight. Sin in your life wont just let you go but every attempt to break free from it even though you may backslide, is a victory. Dont get dishearthened, get up and go again cause if you do you are assured in God of your victory. You may loose a battle here and there but you will win the war if you persevere.

As someone who has struggled with this for years, I can say getting out of this pattern can seem very difficult. The temptation which then follows is to say: "oh well, I'm going to stop confessing then, so as to not abuse of the Lord's Mercy". If this is you, know that there is one way out. And that way is to get closer to God's heart (and Mother Mary through the daily rosary). Renew your prayer life, offer some sacrifices and ask for your own conversion. And remember, at the end of our live, there is only one tragedy, and it is to not have been a Saint. You can do it.

@sbi cyb Does one will to despair? If If it is an emotion that one endures but doesn’t want is it a sin? If one refused to go to confession because of denying that God could forgive him, that would be a sin of despair I think. But to experience despair and lack of trust is a burden and not a sin I think. Maybe. Don’t give up.

Going to confession as often as needed is a must, then getting to daily Mass and receiving the Eucharist as much as possible is a sure way to overcome our sins. God heals the soul so powerfully with a worthy reception of Him in the Eucharist. Our heart becomes like a powerful fortress against the devil if we can receive the Lord daily at Mass. It’s absolutely incredible how Jesus strengthens our soul when we do this. :)

Sooo important to understand ... it’s like making God’s mercy something at our beck and call ... plus it’s like pre-planning sin. Thank you so much for this important reminder of truth.

Thank you so much Fr. Mark Mary! Loved this! I was literally thinking about this yesterday but for venial sins, whether it was taking advantage of God's mercy and the Lord answered through you today. All Glory and Praise be to Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Well said, Fr. Mark - Mary! A high school Catechism Class teacher when I was either a freshman or a sophomore in Claflin High School, Claflin, Kansas decades ago taught/warned about this, but we hardly ever hear about this in recent decades/years in the main Church anymore, people need to be taught this - again and again!

I’m a fallen away Catholic finding my way back to the church and wanted to start with confession and was denied the sacrament by the priest in the confessional. It was like a bucket of ice water thrown on my new excitement coming back to my faith. I’m still not over this. I’m trying to get that excitement back but it’s hard.

I'm very sorry hear this and I've never heard of a priest denying the sacrament. I have heard that in some mitigating circumstances the priest may not feel you are sincerely contrite but that is very rare. I hope the priest gave you some instruction and invited you back to confession. I will pray for you. God bless!

It's sad to hear that but I know there's circumstances when the priest may decline like if you're not contrite or if you are in living in a proximate occasion of sin and don't intend to remove yourself from the occasion for instance two couples cohabiting. But the priest normally tells you the reason and what to do, I hope he clarified the issue to you. I pray for you. God bless you and don't be discouraged.

Maybe he is just a bad priest. Dont let it come between your relationship with God. Go to a different priest and different church. Not every priest is listening to God unfortunately which can cause great pain and hurt to your heart. I am so sorry this happened to you. 🙏🙏🙏

I watched this video early this morning. It hit me like a tons of bricks. I am still thinking about it. I have never heard anything like this before. It makes so much sense, mostly because someone close to me did something that affected my life greatly. I forgave them ,but then It happened again. Also forgave them in time ,but there will be no more if it happens again. I know God is full of mercy, but on my part it is terrible to keep doing something you know that is not right to someone who loves you completely and keep expecting forgiveness. You really opened my eyes today. It makes me want to be so much better.

I really really needed this. I did this before my last confession and I felt like it was wrong to presume but I did it anyway. And I didn’t say it in my confession because I didn’t think it was an actual sin, I thought it would just be sufficient saying the sin itself. And that must be why I didn’t feel as relieved and cleansed as I usually do after confession
