I know this was before the science, but if you add some chutes on the main booster, some landing gears on the "plane" and some *SCIENCE* it can actually be a good probe.

Well, it's actually pretty easy to make a good plane. I've been recording lately with planes, and I've been working on a plane tutorial, because I thought many people were struggling with the same problem as you have. The video could be around within a week, so I think it could be useful for you.

I tried recreating this in the most recent version of KSP, and it works…surprisingly well. I could even land it! (At the cost of one of the wings.) After a lot of modifications, I managed to make it safe for passenger use! When I put a seat on, then put a Kerbal in it, I could safely ride it, and even landed deathless first try! Totally didn’t take me five tries to get the Kerbal to survive, and even then, I totally didn’t realise I would need a parachute, and was totally not forced to bail the Kerbal out to use their own parachute!
(Okay, eventually, I got a Kerbal to survive without having to bail.)
lol these hilarious and totally unnecessary inventions have given me so many ideas for legit serious things and for that danny I thank you

when the giant tank was decoupled, that reduced weight and drag allowed the plane to slingshot past it with it's reduced mass. It's not really accelerating on it's own, it's all in the physics!

get the smallest drone body, stick a truss on it, stick some wheels on the truss; and put the small control surface on as wings;
