- Olympian attempts a Sub-4 mile for his 41st Birthday. Trying to recapture glory during mid-life crisis, an Olympian nearly fails gloriously at his Birthday party as he tries to run 3:58 mile pace (15.1mph) for over four minutes. He trained for 1.5 years to achieve this feat.

He's an Olympic athlete. Efficiency is required to be at that level. You are wasting energy and time rocking back and forth, but you're a normal person, so it's fine.
Me too I’m sure we just need to practice

@@ancientkeyboardwarrior It's obviously a 400 meter track, the most common track in the world, the track used for running, the track in most highschools, and colleges, and olympic stadiums.
@@moomooha234 I never went to school
Its wild how easy his stride looks at that speed
I'm 5.4 ft and 12mph is freaking crazy for me (short legs lol). I wouldn't be able to keep a 15mph pace for 30 secs.
AnotherSadBoi'sCandle Lol it’s not your short legs, it’s you’re conditioning. The more you run the faster you get. Seth Hirsch was a 5”5 Nebraska runner and I remember him running at my XC State and other races. He would dust everyone even though he was so short. He’d always hit 15:30 for 5k or lower.
I have really Long’s legs so running at speeds of 15mph is manageable for me. I wouldn’t be anywhere close to be able to do this tho because my endurance is not that high (my best mile time is around 5-4 min)
Arturo Gonzalez Yeah running 15mph for like 400 meters maybe but not for a mile. A 4:00 minute flat mile is 15mph that’s Olympic level type running. I don’t think your capable of that even if your best is a 4:30 mile.
Aang TheLastAutisticBender oh no no, no way I can’t run a 15mph mile. I usually run miles in intervals from 8 to 13. I was just saying that “jogging” at 15mph is possible for me. It’s just that my endurance is very poor so I can only hold it for like 30 sec max. About my time, that was just an estimate, I would say top could be 4:50 or higher. It’s cause I’m naturally really skinny and have been running a lot all my life. But recently I’ve stopped running as much and have gained some weight, so I’m more on the 7 min mark now
He's so relaxed / conditioned / adapted to run at that pace he makes it look easy, but for most people the speed he is running is an all out sprint and you'd be gassed after 20-30 seconds, maybe 60 if you're extremely fit. It's hard to understand just how fast it is unless you try it yourself, as an NCAA runner who trains everyday I could make it halfway through this, and that second half is the wayyyy more difficult part to be fit enough to do!
Whoa linkmon you watch these, your almost everywhere
It’s funny that you said “most people” and sprint for 20 - 30 seconds.... “Most people” simply cannot run. At all. For any length of time, at any speed. Beyond that, they’ll tell you that running for running’s sake is just stupid. I love to run, but I’m old and smoked for a lot of years and a bunch of other excuses... That said, I can most definitely sprint for 30 seconds, but at my very best sprint pace, this guy would go past me like I wasn’t even moving...
Running is great it’s fun and keeps you healthy and in shape
Rah man like Roblox is a NCAA runner 😂
How you get gassed out on a treadmill g all you need is good legs
For people who don’t understand he’s basically sprinting for 3 minutes and 56 seconds
RS1 Not everybody is as smart as you
@RS1 yeah you are
I guess I'm really ignorant when it comes to running but it didn't look that fast. I was actually confused the whole video.

cuz if u fall on a treadmill going that fast ur gonna get seriously hurt
dthetrapper it’s not dangerous at all since the dude is confident in his abilities and control over his body. However, there would be risk if he wasn’t confident
A sub 4 minute mile can do serious damage to your body if you don't prepare, start, finish, and recover properly
Mike O'Lynn this guy gets it
@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this obviously you don't run. This isn't an extreme sport, as extreme sports are done for the adrenaline rush. While you do get an adrenaline rush while running, it burns off after about the 2 minute mark. Past that it's pure will. You can read my previous comment on why a sub four minute mile is dangerous

41 years old!? You sir are a beast.
He’s got the same birthday as me! Congrats to this warrior.
I've attempted to go sub 5 on the treadmill, and can usually hang on for around 3 minutes at 12mph, but then the legs will just tighten up especially in the calves and I have to lower the speed to miss the time by 20-30 seconds even when I turn it up all the way to 14mph for the last quarter. Really have no ideal how people train to run for sub 4. I've heard that you are supposed to lean in with the pelvis and allow yourself to fall into each stride, but I have trouble maintaining balance and control when I try that.
How about you run the entire mile at 5:20 pace. Next time 5:19 or 18. Be patient and gradually bring it down. Maybe that way you can get to sub 5 eventually.
@Praxis Of Logos I'm actually going to attend a running class soon to try and figure out my issues, because I've been training with very high intensity , but can't seem to get better regardless of my effort.
@Praxis Of Logos Not a problem. I'm just another guy getting into running who is hitting perhaps a newbie plateau and trying to find ways to become better than just a recreational runner.
@Praxis Of Logos I've been training for about 6-7 months so not completely a newbie, but it was pretty quick to go from around a 7 minute mile from not running at all to getting under 6 minutes within about 1-2 months, but after that it seems like all out effort doing 400/800/1600 runs 3 times a week just aren't cutting it anymore to improve. I am hoping that the run clinic that I attend can give me professional advice to keep making steady improvements. I've read up on people running every day, or crazy mileage ie over 20 or even 40 miles a week, even over 100 miles for the elite marathon runners, but my legs are really sore after trying to do 7 miles in a week so I'm not anywhere close to that level since I wouldn't even be able to complete a half marathon without walking most of it. I used to be a dunker so I know my legs can't be that weak, but my endurance sucks. It sounds like incorporating cross training with other types of cardio may allow me to finally make some types of improvement since it seems like too much running just burns me out. Thanks for the advice. I'm really hoping to improve to under 5 prior to it getting too hot during the summer which will make it even tougher to train.
Siu Lau hate to say it man but the only way to really improve running endurance is through more mileage. Sounds like you’re doing a lot of high intensity work which will definitely burn you out overtime. You need longer distance slow running to improve endurance (and also help avoid burnout). You really only need to be doing a hard session once per week. You should look up jack Daniels running formula if you want to learn more. It is considered the gold standard of running training.
This champ took less time to run a mile than some people take to get from the couch to the refrigerator .
