    Weird story. I grew up Christian, denounced everything at 14. Became Wiccan at 18. Returned to Christianity at age 21. Life has been weird. I've found myself more open and accepting having experienced many sides of the religious spectrum. Happy to be where I am now, still working on and discovering my faith, but I'll never force it on anyone. And I'm still incredibly interested to hear other people's point of view on religion of all types. I welcome discourse. :) Thanks for the very real, very open video, ER.

That makes it hard to pay attention to what I'm hearing, and my thoughts spin out of control again. This is the perfect crossover between ASMR (too rambly) and a podcast (too loud).

    Without starting anything, true Christianity is very accepting and understanding of different viewpoints, and the main point of it is to be our best selves and love people as Jesus would have. People who live without faith can be good people and people with faith can be bad people. Such is the nature of humanity. All we should strive for in life is to love strangers as we would our family, and be the best people we can. Please be kind, people.

    What you said about people needing to be more creators and less consumers is so, so true, especially in this day and age. Some years ago, I found myself immersed in a toxic community of fangirls on Tumblr. They would make their entire lives revolve around a certain fandom - eating, sleeping, and breathing nothing but that movie or TV show or comic book franchise - and then they would move onto another one whenever something new came along or the old one would become stale. Many of them were actually massively talented; there were amazing artists, writers, and others with creative talent. Yet, they were always so consumed with their fandoms that they would never actually create anything of their own. They became extremely possessive, territorial, and vigilant over characters, storylines, and worlds that they hadn't even created themselves - sometimes even real actors - and I slowly began to realize that they were all gradually falling down a path of delusion.
    Being a fan is a wonderful thing; it means that you responded very positively to a work of art, and that you like expressing your love for it. But if you make that your everything, then you have lost touch with reality. Those books, movies, and TV shows exist because someone had the courage and creativity to make something completely of their own. If you already have the gift of creativity, you should actually go and create... not just replicate.

    I'm in the reverse situaton. I was raised in a securlar household that, if anything, was sceptical of religion. I became interested in spiritual beliefs, and through a combination of easten and western scholarship I came to call myself an unaffiliated theist.
    The work of David Bentley Hart has made quite an impression on me. He uses the work of classical scholars like Maximus the Confessor through to Bulgakov, as well as scholars from other religious traditions, to describe a concept of God and created order that is beautiful and life affirming. It's through Mr Hart that I was finally able to say I believe in "God" without embarassment or self consciousness.

    I don't think it's very important what religion one was brought up in, unless it's a religion that doesn't allow resigning. As a kid I bought the stories of the bible as hard facts, but I think it was beneficial for my growth I had to ponder these things and find my own path (atheism). Religion becomes a problem only when the parents don't accept the child choosing his faith (or the lack thereof).

      Of course. They belong to the Christian church, but they aren't very active Christians. We rarely talk about religion, but it's not a taboo subject either. I think it's very sad when parents disown their child if the child resigns the religion. Why should anybody have to make a choice between being true to oneself and family?

      Another person with little understanding. Hah, you think that your parents "choose" for you. Or even you choosing your path? Wrong. Christ calls for his flock. He was slain for his flock. Everything was predestined. If you were part of his flock then you would have no feeling of atheism. You would simply be a follower of the Lord. Repent and believe on the gospel

Before the Bible there were people, no mention of the current God, there has always been different gods, God is relatively new compared to other religions, people, not God, created the Bible, two humans, created Jesus, which by the way wouldn't even be a real name, "Jesus" was "born" in Israel, but that's not even a name that would've been around back then in that area, more than likely, if Jesus was real, he would be Mohammed. But nevertheless, all religion we're created by people. So who are they to say it's real? We're just going to follow along? How do we know the prophets weren't lying, or crazy, also the Bible was translated from Hebrew, we mis-translated a lot.

    I have a lot of respect for what you are speaking about. I was raised Roman Catholic. I'm 44 years old now and I am atheist.
    I say that simply...but it was a process. From a very young age, I asked about our faith. I never got answers that were satisfying. The answers I received, were, as I saw it, not logical at all. I read a lot of books and researched about the nature of faith, different faiths etc, I asked alot of questions about how my close friends and family thought and felt. I was curious.
    I was lucky enough to have friends who Catholic/Protestant/Muslim/Buddhist and atheist or just had zero knowledge of religion. My fav aunt was and is a Catholic Nun, a wonderful person who I could trust. I had a wonderful friend of my aunt, a priest, who was a wonderfully patient man and was very open with giving me feedback.
    That led me to more in depth, serious contemplation, research and exploration of Humanism and the Enlightenment..
    Eventually in my 30's I was pretty sure I was a non believer. The last thing I let go of was that comforting belief in life after death. Souls. Angels. Fa-la-la.
    I'm now certain that I believe that there is nothing after death. It's lights out. Over. And I'm not afraid. It comforts me endlessly to be but a speck in the vast universe. To be surrounded in this universe by things we are only beginning to understand! It doesn't make me sad, it's excites me. For a little while while I exist, I am a miniscule part of and endless universe. That's awesome.
    My parents are dead. They died and I was already atheist for a decade. It had drawn a huge weft between my mother and I. She was really angry, and I was so happy to be free of faith-based she took it as a personal insult that I didn't burst into flames (hahaha) and actually seemed better off and ecstatic.
    I am a person who loves and cares for others. I am affection. I am generous. I am funny. I can do lots of things. I'm smart, I like to occupy my mind. I like to travel to foreign places, I've been to Europe, the Carribean, the Yukon, and in each province and territory in Canada. Someday I will go to China. I am very interested in different culture, especially different food!👍
    Lack of religion or belief does'nt mean that I have no moral compass. I have love for humanity and care what happens to people and living things. I contribute to the world by helping raise and love my neice and nephew. I love and support of partner. I help my elders in my family. I am an honest and loyal employee. I have many friends who come from different countries, different backgrounds, different faiths, different colours. They each have something to I teach me..and you know what? THEYRE FRIENDS. I LOVE THEM.
    ¶My point is...you can have no religion and still be a moral person with real values that you live by.
    Anyways thats me.

    I haven't been baptized since I was born, and my entire family was Christian, but God didn't play an important role in my life. We never went to church, (I've been to a church camp but that's it) and we never read the bible. My mom didn't even let me or my brother touch her bibles anyway (they were family heirlooms). I never heard any stories from the bible until my Christian friend let me borrow her kid versions and I started reading. Although I was young at the time, I noticed that the 'God' Christians praise isn't really what he was. I noticed over and over the unfair punishments he brought down on us. The flood, I ask myself, "if he's so powerful, why not poof the bad things away?" Adam and Eve had no knowledge of good and bad, they were just like babies, no knowledge on right from wrong, or what doing bad things even caused. And they were punished inhumanly. Which is why at the age of twelve I became an atheist.

      Not forcing my religion on to you. Not trying to hurt you at all and no hate all! All love and just want to show you my point of view and experience!😁😊✝️ I’m a freshman I’m high school. I’ve pretty much been a Christian my whole life but I don’t have a bible and didn’t got to church. I just knew what it was and didn’t listen to what GOD says in the Bible. In middle school I wasn’t the nicest person and I would sin a lot since I didn’t listen to what GOD says but the last year or so I have been on tiktok and seen some Christian tiktoks and all this other stuff about GOD and stuff and I decided to get into it more, best decision of my life. GOD is the Greatest! GOD has helped me so much and I know it doesn’t seem like he’s there or he’s with you but he is. When you start to spread the GOSPEL and pray to GOD and get to know GOD you will realize he’s real and loves you. Like I said I used to not pay attention to GOD or his laws and stuff but I recently started learning about GOD and trusting him and it’s an amazing and wonderful thing. GOD’s timing is perfect and I hope one day you can give him a chance and get into him and learn about GOD and read the Bible and pray to him. Like I know, I really do if it feels like he’s not with you or your don’t feel motivated but if you watch videos and read the Bible about GOD and JESUS CHRIST, the one who died for you on the cross for our actions and sins, you will feel motivated and start to trust and have faith and hope, like I said I know it’s hard and I’m not forcing my religion on you I’m just giving you my life experience and hope you can give GOD a chance. I’ll pray for you! No hate at all to you! GOD Bless you, your friends, and your family! GOD Bless everyone of y’all, y’all’s friends, and y’all’s families! No hate at all! All love! GOD and JESUS CHRIST LOVES YOU!💯🙏✝️❤️🙌✅😁😊

Theres many so called christians out there that go to church weekly to listen to some dude on stage but dont read their bibles and UNsurprisingly theyre the ones that have questions and doubts because they fill their souls with worldly things that do not sustain the soul, therefore kill it. theyre not seeking a direct father-son relationship with God through His Word 🙃... and sorry to brake it to you, but Catholism will upset you a bit after reading the Bible, since historically speaking Catholicism is a fusion of christianity and early european paganism, and the pracitices and traditions and norms contradict alot of teachings in the Bible...

      RasakBlood Are you really asking this question? what he meant, is that being a Catholic (for example, my family is Catholic, but I don't care) does not care what religion the others are, because of course, everyone has a different one. All he wants is for them to be good and treat each other well. Why did you ask that question? I don't get it.

    • @RasakBlood
      @RasakBlood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Noah Because his religion tells him to care. But he says he don´t. So how can he still be Catholic then? The answer ofc is that he and most other religious people are not following the religions they claim to be part of. They are just picking out the parts they find nice and ignore the rest. If you are going to just follow the things you think is right anyway then whats the point of claiming to follow any religion.

    • @robinyuan9472
      @robinyuan9472 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      RasakBlood I'm pretty sure no major religion requires believers to only be nice to people of the same religion. What part isn't he following by wishing people to be nice to each other regardless of religion? I think religious or not, we can all share about our beliefs to others. Whether or not they are convinced is another issue. But it's important to not be annoy and forceful in any way.

    • @XxXDestroyer
      @XxXDestroyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Noah Because claiming to follow a religion doesn't mean you have to be perfect, most of us try very hard to follow what's right and do what we believe in. But at the end of the day we are all only human, and we make mistakes and we all sin. That doesn't make anyone any less religious, or unable to be a "catholic" or whatever they may be.

      Poly Wog Then you haven't made your way back into a life of salvation my friend. You either believe or you don't. If you don't believe that Christ's sacrifice was the ultimate remission for sin then to put it in short you have no salvation. Christ was put up on the cross for his people. I'm certainly glad to hear that your more accepting that there is a God but I urge you to inch your way to the True God. Our Lord Jesus Christ. He gave his life you you so that you may have salvation. The old testament was of works and animal sacrifice. The remission of sin was only made through blood sacrifice. Out of the righteousness of God he gave his only son to be that blood sacrifice for ever. That blood shed is the only reason why we are forgiven of our sins. God poured his cup of wrath on Christ. Believe that Christ died on the cross, was buried and rose again the third day and that, that sacrifice on the cross is the remission of sin then you will be saved. I urge you my friend. We are entering some scary times. Now is the time to get right with our righteous holy Lord. He came as the lamb slain for us but he will return the lion. Please, pray ask for forgiveness and embrace the love of our lord Jesus.

    I really love this video, and you're phenomenal. Personally, the reason I stay a devoted Catholic is because it makes me happy. Unlike many Catholics or Christians in my community, i don't try to convert atheists because I want them to be happy with their own beliefs. I don't think I should go knocking on the door of an atheist and hit him with a Bible, and I don't think atheists should suffer from trying to live up to the Bible's expectations. In fact, a lot of times after my parents do this, I knock on their doors, apologize, and tell them to believe in whatever makes them happy. When I have kids, I would prefer they believe in Catholicism, but if they aren't happy later on in life, I would give them full support of their own beliefs. Now straight to the point. I'm glad you've found something to believe in that makes you happy (if not happy, then at least satisfied). One part of my religion is being selfless, and I believe that everybody else's happiness comes before mine. Ephemeral Rift, if you read this, you can stop here, the rest is for anybody who responds to this comment. If anybody comments that I have no balls, then let me see you beat somebody twice your size and make him cry because he you. Also, to my fellow Catholics, i'm a complete pacifist and Democrat (Just because I'm a pacifist doesn't mean I'll sit there and let myself get walked on). Jesus and the Republican party are complete opposites. And if you think "Jesus may be a Democrat, but God is a Republican", re-read the entire New Testament and play these words on repeat, "God forgives all sins except for blasphemy(the unforgivable sin)", this quote isn't from the Bible (I've read it), but it's true and emphasized. That's right LGBT community, a Catholic is trying to defend you(because I support you. I'm not gay or tran though). I know Catholicism is hard, but the easiest part is learning acceptance, that's why Catholicism makes me happy. So if you're unsatisfactory with Catholicism, that's fine. Be happy and believe in whatever you wish, you have my full support.

    Very interesting discussion. I'm born and raised Roman Catholic as well, and still practice as best I can. I've struggled with doubts quite a bit throughout life, and I've had some doubts quite recently too.
    I have found new ways to sort of rekindle my faith and help me understand my own faith as well as other faiths. Attending church is certainly one of the best forms of practice for myself, but going out into nature also has a certain spiritual feel to it. It's very personal to every individual. I have also found reading Saints of the Church and various philosophers/theologians really helped me see various issues differently. I don't always feel very connected to contemporary Christianity, I guess you could say I have tried to find my own way of thinking theological issues through. But I still like connecting with others of the same and different faiths. Thanks for this video ER, I hope you consider doing more like these in the future

    I grew up in a very conservative branch of the Lutheran church; my dad was a pastor and I didn't dare question my faith until I began college biology courses and couldn't reconcile evolution with the concept of original sin, i.e. if we evolved (which there is overwhelming evidence for), then Adam and Eve were not real, and if they weren't real, then there the whole basis for Christ dying for our sins is gone. My faith dropped off pretty quickly after that.

    Agnostic means “not knowing”. Therefore all humans are agnostic regardless how they are raised, it’s just that believers don’t want to admit that. And the reason why they don’t admit it is that they are taught that accepting something without evidence (i.e. “believing”) is a virtue in itself.

      The bible also says that no star is the same and that their is more stars than their is sand on the earth at a time where humans had no way of even looking at outer space.
      The bible also says that the earth is round at a time where humans believed the earth is flat and even believed we were on a huge animal's back.
      The bible also says that blood gives life to the flesh.
      Humans would seriously bleed themselves out thinking they would rid diseases and plagues like that....they obviously died from losing blood.
      The bible also says their is springs deep underneath the ocean which us modern humans found out was true with the gear and technology we have rn . now tell me how can humans have known any of this at that time

      Kushed Out I’m no bible expert, and I honestly know nothing about the claims you make above. But please explain how the earth is approx 6,000 years old using EVIDENCE. Please explain how god created light on the first day, and the sun, stars and “heavens” on the fourth. Please explain how at a minimum 14,000 animals got on a 500 foot boat for a year. How did lions survive in the ark for a year without something to eat? Why do other religions exist? If god was really a god, I would think he would share his wisdom with EVERYONE not just those who lived in one area? And finally, without saying “god has a plan/he works in mysterious ways/Cite the Bible.” In other words, using real world LOGIC and EVIDENCE why does a truly omnipotent and benevolent god allow bad things to happen?
      To clarify, I do not mean my above comments as condescending. I want to understand why people seem to “cherry pick” the parts of he bible that make sense, and ignore the parts that don’t.

I still believe in the possibility of anything but to believe in one single outrageous truth when so many religions exists... it just makes us look so stupid as a species. With that said, religion seems to truly help certain kinds of personalities and if it's helping people then i'm not going to try to convince someone all of what they know is wrong. Great idea for a video man. I was raised in the Christian Baptist religion myself and was very devout until i turned 30 and finally allowed myself to question everything I was raised to believe. Only took about 15 minutes for me to realize it was all bullshit. Have been an athiest ever since. Very comforting to see I'm not the only one!

    I’m glad you put the word atheist in there man, there’s too much stigma around that word; People just feel that if you’re an atheist that there’s automatically something not quite right. Not all people, sure, but I don’t think anyone can deny that there’s prejudice there. I think more people should just come out with it - if it doesn’t put you in a bad situation. I fully believe there’s more of us than demographics let on (maybe due to poorly worded questions too) because they may use that word.

    Your story is similar to mine only I was raised Lutheran and went to a Lutheran school. My friends made fun of me for questioning what we learned. I had a pervert teacher in 5th grade who would hug us girls and rub our backs when we did good on memorizing bible passages. Our class was also told we were going to hell if we ever listened to Marilyn Manson or The Beatles. My parents loved the Beatles so I grew up listening to them.
    As the years went on, I decided to become an Atheist because science made sense and gave answers that the bible couldn't.
    I do have Christian friends and we get along great as long as one doesn't try to convert the other. We just avoid the topic.
    I'll end this comment with my favorite quote from Ricky Gervis in his discussion with Stephen Colbert. "There are 3000 gods to choose from so basically you deny one less god than I do. You don't believe in 2999 gods and I don't believe in just one more."

    Thank you very much for this video - unexpected but very welcome one. I recently became an agnostic after being a roman catholic for 18 years... And I'm also struggling to define my ideals, my goals in life, what to believe and what to not. Therefore your video is very inspiring and relieving - I finally see a person that had same problems as mine, thought the similar way and could finally solve them to some degree at least... So there is also a hope for me after all :)
    I really look forward to more videos like that - it is not simple to find an interesting and intellectual person on youtube who actually talks about problems and makes honest confessions

    I'm an atheist as well, but when you say that we are the only species that has morals and values I have to disagree. I'm sure you would agree that these morals and values do not come from a god, so they must be evolutionary... Look at species of apes - how they care for others in their group. Those are values for sure, and possibly even (burgeoning) morality. Hell, I can see signs of decency in my dog, so she has a certain set of limited values, I'm quite confident of this.

    • @jboedecker
      @jboedecker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You make some bold statements about apes and their lack of ability to conceptualize. To say they lack all ability to form a concept is just patently false. Do they have the same ability as a human to conceptualize? No, but to say they lack all ability to form simple concepts is just not a correct statement. Do apes have morality? Probably not. If you will more carefully read my statement, you will note that I never made a claim that they did. But he also made a claim about values, which I took greater exception to. Non-human animals have values. Period. Hell, even non-primate animals have values.

    • @noct8225
      @noct8225 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jake Boedecker altho I can't say anything about apes, but many animals I think lack morals etc. This doesn't mean that they are bad. They just don't have a concept of what's good and bad, which actually comes to the common idea that humans are the only creatures that can be truly evil. Lions kill but they don't do it for pleasure and they just do what they have always done. Humans are aware and can therefore be evil.

    • @noct8225
      @noct8225 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some animals like your dog can obviously see what actions are seen as good behaviour. Dogs being a more social animal are also more likely, I'd assume, to therefore care if they do something damaging to their relationship with the owner etc.

    • @Arizonaball1
      @Arizonaball1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know if it's a set of morals or values as much as it is millions of years of evolution and instinctual survival. It's simply self preservation for almost all wild animals we know of. They cannot, therefore, be evil. They do what they do simply to be able to not die and make offspring. In the end, that's all life really is.

    I’m glad that somebody finally had the courage to talk about this. I was born catholic, lived next door to a Catholic Church, and attended catholic school. When I was 12, I started to question the church, citing contradictions made in the Bible and generally exploring he flimsy confines of what is in my opinion, utter bullshit. I didn’t understand how people could live their lives doing good things for the sake of being rewarded. I still see it as a sickness. If I have kids, I want to make sure they’re able to make their own choice when it comes to religion.

    I was raised in am agnostic household where my father grew up in heavily Southern Baptist household and my mom was just allowed to think whatever she wanted, both of them are agnostic and raised me to just think about life how I perceive and find to be acceptable and I just never fit in with a Baptist, Protestant, Catholic view especially growing up in the deep south and seeing a whole bunch of Christian ideals thrown around like it's a way of life for every person in America. I'm happy that I was given such a lenient upbringing with my family being fine that I'm an atheist, it's shaped up fairly well once I got out of K-12 and I think I've correctly followed my parent's advice on how I should determine what I want to follow in life.
