Awesome content guys. Just as a quick tip for the water hole, instead of breaking so much ice each time for the water put a bunch if pine tree branches (enough to cover the hole) then cover it with snow, and the next time you come back it won't be frozen over much. Easy access to water...

This method works well, I've seen people do it.

Good idea! That's the way it was done back in the old days. I remember my Dad doing this for ice fishing holes too. Later on when pink Styrofoam came out he started using that instead. The holes were always marked with sticks for safety.

I think that living off the grid is great especially away from big brother. You have done a fantastic job. The only upsetting thing is to see a black bear skin on the wall. When I went to rockies Canada is saw many and the idea to kill them is barbaric. They have as much right to be on this planet, maybe more than us. They kill for food. You kill for pleasure. In UK that is just cruelty. We love animals.

    • @kjmumma
      @kjmumma ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@pamela-mm7juI feel the same way about killing for sport, but I would imagine that that bear skin has been part of this cabin for decades if not a past generation. Throwing it away does nothing to bring the bear back but it does spark conversation about how one wants to live with nature so I personally do not fault this family for having it on the wall.

The BEST video I've seen so far Explains EVERYTHING you need to know to be off grid and allows you choose alternatives also doesn't waste time with needless cooking footage and putting us through even more wasted time making us watch you eat it. Very educating for beginners A lot of important topics to best be prepared.. Exactly what I need to know BEFORE I take my FIRST step. Thank You

Old man Winter...definitely took a long time to arrive but with this Cold snap I am sure the thinkness of the ice on the lake is much safer....As for the beauty in the cinenamatography....it is unmatched and love how various family members take time to be the narrator of each story told!! It truly is a family affair and as DAD said....NO one said it would ever be easy ( prophetic at that) ...but nothing is ever worthwhile if it isnt easy!!!! Cheers, and hope 2023 brings your family .....health, happiness, and growth!!! Warmest of regards, 1000 islands ontario!!!

Awesome way to spend Sunday morning, with the van Stralen Family! The introduction today was exceptional. The photography with its music was beautiful!! The cabin shot in the snow should be framed, so you always remember the beauty of you cabin in the snow.
It was simply wonderful and will watch it again!
This was very informative about how life has gone off grid in the dead of Winter. Delighted you can get safely on and off the island now for needed supplies. It sounds like all the preparations you made were worth the effort. But, it was a major amount of work. I think the next time you overwinter on the island will be so much easier than this first year has been. What a simply grand adventure this has been. Thank you for taking us along with you.
I have enjoyed every single minute of it. You put out superior videos, and everyone seems to have an eye and ear and creative ability to produces this outstanding product.

    Hi,
When i was young we had a cabin in the archipelago of Stockholm,
We had a Woodstove in the kitchen to kook on.
For the winter season we also had no running water but we had a well.
To heat water we had a 15 liter barrel with a tap coming out 10 cm from the side of the barrel.
We used this for doing the dishes and hand washing.
I saw you had a wood-stove and thought it may be good to have such a solution so you do not have to use propane for preheating water.
We had a similar solution at a scout camp using a milk canister and a water heating element connected with copper piping to the bottom and the middle for circulation.
The Water element was used as heat absorber in the fire.
This canister also had a tap and word spread fast in the camp of 400 persons.
I think the first solution is more convenient for you.
When the water is not used it will serve as a heat storage a while after the fire has gone out.
    I love you Channel !!
Looking forward to the next video !!

    For your power needs:
Have you considered a wind generator?
Or a paneled roof on the barge that could remain in full sunlight and tilt for maximum gain during winter?
Assuming the barge would be ok frozen in to the lake a few yards off shore?
Rigged properly, the wiring would be small gauge and longer lengths would be feasible.
However, considering the cloud cover during winter and short days, the most cost effective system may be what you have: a generator.
Especially if you plan to spend summers exploring elsewhere.

If you keep old windows then out on storm winter clear cover's on the outside, for one when your not there it will protect your cabin from moisture mold. Were in Oregon and we have snow but my brother's cabin takes a snow hit were you dig your door way out everyday. But he's been doing it for twenty five year's I think he's learning it's a next year better yep next year better ok .

That's a beautiful place you have there. My family has a small log cabin on a lake in Wisconsin and it's mostly a summer cabin but sometimes some of us go there in the spring, fall, and winter too for short lengths of time. It's loved by all of us and is a little piece of heaven on earth. My great grandparents bought it in the summer of 1965 and it's wonderful that it's still in the family today, so many generations throughout the years. My great grandparents who started it all have been long gone but would be so proud and happy with the investment they made in this tiny cabin and so glad it's still family owned and loved to this day like they always meant for it to be. 🥰

When I was at my brothers big cabin the men went to get water they pulled away the pine tree branches and just wire moved light ice as they scooped clean water and covered up with branches and snow on top. Once water came in his wife ran it threw a cleaner and then hot tea nice. I believe he has about 90 half gallon jars of dehydrated food's along with dry goods it's a different living but game night, puzzle's, art books and card's one needs to have self time. But if your from the city you freak you go potty out side in a coffin standing not really but felt like it.

You can save them by making picture frames out of them if you ever upgrade your windows. Just make sure you keep them .

Happy Sunday, great vid, you and your family have an awesome cabin and your explanation of each area was very informative. Yesterday and including today, we have received 36 + inches of fresh snow. It's been a big winter so far. Will be clearing decks tomorrow, again. Over the years, I have enjoyed staying in many Canadian fly-out wilderness lodges, enjoying the solitude, great food and being with close friend, alway a great time fishing the lakes, streams and rivers. Your cabin and island reminds me all those different lodges. Stay warm, healty and safe.

I too live on a island, but I am in the Southern Bahamas. Of course we don’t have snow here but we are in Hurricane alley, but in the 30+ years down here we have never had a Direct hit. My large 6 bedroom 7 bath home sits 90 feet above high tide. The basement is all concrete and about 2000 sq ft. With 2 bedrooms 1 bath and kitchenette. The 3 floor is my office & ham shack. We are all Solar powered here with 20,000 gallon water catchment system+ a 20x30 pool all freshwater. No cars, but solar powered golf carts to get around the 700 acre island. I also have an air strip and I am a Pilot. We store lots of food, we raise chickens, rabbits and have wild hogs running free. It is amazing what you can grow here with a 12 month growing season. Once a year I fly to Oregon and shop at Azure Standard for meats, grain & spices. Then about every 2 months I fly to Homestead Florida where a Walmart superstore is right next to the airport and have a Mail Drop for Amazon packages. I do own a car, Land Rover Defender 130 wagon / camper that I leave with my son in Northern Idaho. I spend Christmas with his family then go to Quartzsite, AZ to see old friends and play music till all hours of the night. By March it’s back to the Bahamas.

Wow, Amazing lifestyle! Hope you will still be able to have the freedom to travel in future days, but maybe your family can join you on your self sufficient island if all gets too "complicated" around us. It sounds lovely, but my heart would long for PNW mountains and snow so I would vote for Idaho 😉❄️🌲ps. That's why we're pre-cooking and freeze drying as much food as we can so hopefully could get by ok even during a long winter 😊🙏

I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Our ice fishermen here get into trouble sometimes. Our fire department has a hovercraft that can hold several people. It works well on ice or open water. Good luck!!!

Rewatching, this just is so breathtaking to see, even the second time. Each Season has such beautiful qualities. This was an amazing series you all did. And seeing it again it hits you how spectacular it really was. This is family bonding at it highest.
I think of the TV Show, Little House of the Prairie and their struggles. Adversity brings a family so much closer than the easy breezy days of Summer! This was just an enormous adventure.
Thank you for sharing with all of us, and your many talents! ❤.

So interesting what different places call the snow mobiles. Here in Alaska we call them snow machines. 😀. I loved learning about how you get warm water. I think your sewer staying unfrozen is going to be a challenge with less people using it. My friends sewer kept freezing with just one using it. This video was well done, so thorough!

In the event your cabin catches fire and your family is chased out on a cold winter night, possibly with no time to grab warm clothes, I'm sure you have a game plan. If not, it's a good thing to have some sort of heated shelter until help arrived.

    • @EFRT
      @EFRT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. We have a plan in place and hope we never have to use it. But we agree always best to be prepared.

As much as I like the snow dogs, I like the modern snowmobiles more. They are faster so you can drive out of iffy situations. Snow dogs are more maneuverable in tight spaces but lack the speed and agility of snowmobiles. Thanks for the cabin tour. Good luck fishing, I still haven't been out yet, lol.

You should cover your hole in the ice with a number of pine branches and cover them with snow and you will, at most, have thin ice to break through and lessen you work to break through to water.

Excellent ! There's a lot more to this than meets the eye, at least if you want the modern conveniences. In my youth, we had no desire for internet, or solar power, or tankless heated water because it didn't exist! We got our water from buckets, drawn from the swift running river out back. Warm water was achieved by heating it up on the stove. Warm showers didn't exist. In later years, we installed a point, for a shallow well (probably 20-25 feet down) and had plenty of water year round. Heat was from a wood burning, heatalator style, field stone, boring hard wood fireplace (our favorite was apple or cherry wood) -- (not very efficient but it did the trick) supplemented by a hot-air, kerosene heater (kerosene doesn't gel like Number 2 fuel oil and was kept outside in a 250 gallon tank). We lost electricity often, our back ups were Coleman stoves, and kerosene lanterns. In other words, you're living a life of luxury with all that technology :-). I'm so happy you showed the slush on the lake. I replied to one of your videos a month or so ago and cautioned you about that. We would often encounter them and snowmobiles in our day were designed differently (very little track travel and maybe 50-60 hp). Today, these narrow (12-15" tracks) and high horsepower engines can power through most (probably not all) slush fields and even hydroplane across open water (not recommended). I noticed that in Scandinavia, it's common to see small hover craft, instead of air boats, in use across frozen or semi-frozen lakes. Airboats are exposed to the weather and while they can cross snow, I can imagine that being a rough ride across drifts vs. open water. But they certainly would cover any dangerous ice condition. Well done. I wish I was with you. If you can find a Bombardier Bombi, or equivalent, you may find it useful too.

Thanks for the update. Winter gear that offers insulation as well as flotation is great, but does it keep the water out? Water conducts heat away from the body 25 faster than air. Please remember the 1-10-1 rule; you having one minute to control your breathing (gasp reflex), less than 10 minutes for self-rescue, and 1 hour before you become unconscious due to hypothermia. Stay safe out there.

If you could do solar panels on the lake, like a dock extending out, that seems like it would be ideal for gathering the sun.
