The Thompson Steelhead are being picked off on their approaches by the tenfold increase in the California sea lion and Harbour Seal population in Georgia Strait. The good news is about 130 Transient Orca are frequenting the Straits and are feeding ravenously on the abundant seals and sea lions. A natural cull is happening but it might take another 10 years. Eastern Vancouver Island and the Fraser River Steelhead have been hit pretty hard by the pinniped predation. It's just not a good time to be an anadromous form of Rainbow Trout.

Gee , that is nice to know. The sea lions were hanging out at the mouth of the Columbia feeding on hatchery Kings returning to spawn. No one ever sees any Orcas there. I think the population was about 10,000 sea lions

@@yossarianmnichols9641 At least Oregon and Washington have robust hatchery programs. I've seen videos of the Sealions at Bonneville, it's totally out of control. Eastern Vancouver Island and the Interior Fraser Steelhead are taking a beating in the approaches to the estuaries.

Go down to fraser and see the unregulated gill nets and you will see what is what.

@@B-kl8vj 30 or 40 years ago there were 2500 gillnetters and seiners working the Fraser and its approaches yet the Thompson River was full of Steelhead. Now there are a few FN fisheries and very little in the way of commercial fisheries and there is almost no Steelhead. Still think it's the nets? It's not, it's the pinnipeds. The same thing is happening on eastern Vancouver Island, the seal and sea lions are gobbling them. Until that is dealt with the Steelhead aren't coming back.

@@allancrow134 seasons opened and closed. They didn't fish around the clock for weeks on end. Of course there are other issues.
