Man it’s been years since I watched this. Thought I would go back for the hell of it and see how much technology changed. Crazy how a single AA/14500 flashlight with an XPL emitter destroys this thing now. Mind blown
you guys that are talking bad about this, just look at the upload date than think about how far led tech has come in the last few years...the fact that i'm using LED bulbs in my house and paid less than 5 bucks for them is simply amazing, and they put out a TON of light.....Something that was impossible or very very expensive in 2008.
The first LEDs were developed in the early 1960s, however, they were low-powered and only produced light in the low, red frequencies of the spectrum. The first high-brightness blue LED was demonstrated by Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Corporation in 1994.
***** what is wrong with you?? internet tough guy, speak to people like that in real life, you will get punched in the face but you won't will you, chicken shit punk, only is aggressive online out of reach

100% on point. The cone makes a dramatic difference in the performance of any flashlight. As it appears in the video, it's a really well-built... lantern
LOL that was dim as shit , and how much did it cost to make. I'm impressed that you built it but , do you know the problem with it ?? No lens or anything to help magnify all the led's.
TheVideoVolcano i may upload a video of my 100w led so if you wana see some bright led its focused with 2 lens and i should have it done within a week if the rest of the parts arrive. It works still but my battery protection circuit isn't complete.
The only thing it is missing clearly is something to reflect and focus the light to where you want it to go instead of out in all directions. That will increase the brightness to extremes.
Sonari Neiracchen well... A definition of laser... A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. The term "laser" originated as an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". A laser differs from other sources of light because it emits light coherently. Spatial coherence allows a laser to be focused to a tight spot, enabling applications like laser cutting and lithography. See? A laser - Spatial coherence allows a laser to be focused to a tight spot. It is something like concentrated light.
"Sorry for the lack of music or voice over." So many uploaders put a too-loud, crappy music background over their mumbly narrative, making it even harder to understand. Glad you didn't make that mistake. .
It looks like most people don't realize that this thing was made 8 years ago, around the time where this kind of LEDs, 5mm with integrated lens, were the most common type of "bright" white LED. Sure it looks weak compared to any modern LED and you can get compact flashlight that would outpower this one, but that's the advance in technology - Think about computer You've got 8 years ago and that cheap new laptop can outpower good PC from that time. The advance in technology for LEDs is even more impressive, since 8 years ago expensive LED light bulb would barely work as a night light while now you can get a powerful floodlight for less...
Damn the comments are really dumb, this was in 2008! This was amazing back then. That is like saying haha look at that commodore 64 my iphone is better
Kerem Deniz Erkişi Led flashlights were not common in 2008, at that time LED replacement bulbs were just coming on the market to be available for the public. If you want to see proof of this you can search this in google " MagLite 2C/2D 4D 3W LED drop-in Technical Review". Now I can get a flashlight with more powerful SINGLE LED and the same or greater brightness than what is shown in this video.
0:50 - No need for an apostrophe for LEDs. It's an initialism so pluralising it doesn't require an apostrophe. Only possessive nouns or possessive plurals require apostrophes!
Some say that even to this day, you can sometimes see a bright light aimed at the sky on cloudy evenings... ...could it be the ominous Bat-Signal that strikes fear into the hearts of all criminals, perhaps... or just these guys fucking with a flashlight that's about as bright as lightning for infinitely longer than the split-second flash?
Imagine the look on his face , Bruce Wayne rushing to the bat cave to put his gear on roaring down the road in his stig only to find this guy with his torch 😏
i get it, but he said output, wich is the power "exit" and input the power "entrance" like a laptop charging device, it has for example a 250volt input, and a 20 volt output (or something like that i dont remember)

Pretty neat! Just imagine how powerful it would be with the new generation of LEDs used in high lumen tactical flashlights, etc.! I'm not even sure if that could be done because I'm not an electronics guy but those LEDs can each produce light about as strong as a car headlight. I know because I just bought a small 950 lumen tactical flashlight that will light things up for hundreds of yards and it fits in the palm of my hand.
AdventureMan (formerly hikerboy16) look at the nitecore p12 is 65 bucks after tax and everything and get a 18650 battery 12 buck (recommend a sony vtc 4 or 5 30 amp) with a intellicharger 15 to 20 i have that setup omg the light is bright. it will sustain 950 lumens for 3 mins then kicks it down to high to save the light
500 LEDs != 500x brighter than 1 LED. It's more like 5x brighter. It looks cool, but if you're looking for brightness, it's a waste of money to add more light sources, much more wallet+energy efficient to just find brighter light sources.
Well your 10$ light can maybe make a brighter spot, but im pretty sure that you cant light up with it a whole football field that good :D imagine how bright the spot would be if there were a reflector.... sry bad english :/
Well, he didn't have a reflector to focus the beam. If he had it probably would be A LOT brighter. Also he used standard LED's rather then some higher powered ones.

Today we can buy higher watt LEDs and make much brighter things than this, in smaller size. But, here we are seeing something that was created in 2008. Britain did that 7 decades ago. They flashed super, super bright lights off and on in the eyes of the Nazi pilots and the pilots eyes dilated causing them to be temporarily blinded which of course caused some of them to fly straight into the ground.
"painting with light" as a professional photographer I and others (artists) would be interested in using this type of "light source" for long/multiple exposure photography. also submit this to "make magazine" .
If you are a professional photographer you must know that this lantern is too bright to paint something... You need a low aperture and low iso for long time and a candle...
yes I do. and I have. I was thinking very big. I.e. At 100-500 yards or more for large structures. desert rock formations, entire bridges - it would be a special effect - who knows. In any case great build. PS I used to do lighting design and run follow spots.
Also rule of squares -unfocused light falls off with the square of the distance. so yes, your light could only be used to paint at appropriate long range.
David Luftig For longer distances is better to use a simple green laser... Goes further and have a small center... A lantern have a bigger spot and cannot compete with a laser...
w1p30ut3r There are a lot of photo applications for this kind of light. What I'd be most excited about is indirect illumination. Heck, you could bounce this off a wall in a pitch black room and get so much ambient fill you could work portraits handheld. Landscapes for sure, I'd love to put this baby up on a boom in the forest and work with the trees. I used to carry whole bags of flash lights into caves and tunnels, but I eventually got sick of all the work. This light would be a lot of fun to try, and with those brightness settings, it looks like a very powerful and flexible tool.

Well done. A good project and an excellent example of why most great inventors were amateurs. I think the guy who invented the lightbulb said that he invented 1000 non working light bulbs before he got it right and he considered the 1000 the real discovery.
Man it’s been years since I watched this. Thought I would go back for the hell of it and see how much technology changed. Crazy how a single AA/14500 flashlight with an XPL emitter destroys this thing now. Mind blown

+Jay Simons Uh... They cost $18.00+ where I live. It's cheaper to set my house on fire plus it's much brighter.
I bought mine at my local hardware store for $3.99 they are only 9w but they compare to a 60w bulb as far as light output and they don't get hot.
led lights have been around for about 10 or 15 years now I'm pretty sure.

The Finding Bigfoot crew needs that flashlight.
totally agreed C:
you are bleeding light out of the sides, by not having a reflective cone over the led lights to direct the light towards one direction.

you need to build a parabolic reflective cone to massively amplify and direct scattered light
fr
100% on point. The cone makes a dramatic difference in the performance of any flashlight. As it appears in the video, it's a really well-built... lantern
You're missing one simple thing, that could make that light more concentrated. A mirror around the lens.

The only thing it is missing clearly is something to reflect and focus the light to where you want it to go instead of out in all directions. That will increase the brightness to extremes.
i bet with focused light you could poke someones organs with that thing.
I wonder how powerful that would make it. I mean, if you could focus it to be thin like a laser, would it burn anything?
Sonari Neiracchen I imagine so, since there are LED lasers
Sonari Neiracchen well...

Well, he didn't have a reflector to focus the beam. If he had it probably would be A LOT brighter. Also he used standard LED's rather then some higher powered ones.
Doug Dale Reflector would just help to increase the throw of the beam (candela) but it won't help to increase the brightness (lumens).
oh yeah

You're a pos. I'd really like to see you do better.
The flashlight on my phone is stronger...
It's not...
Do you know how old this is? It's years old how good were flash lights back then? Idiot
+Ehomeyjr Im just saying. Jesus, you need to calm the fuck down
That's why I love engineers. It's like you take an up graded flash light to school and it's like.
"Hey, my dad built me the Sun...What did yours do?!"
My nokia 3310 got better flashlight
9 years later and even China makes cheap lights brighter than this. Fun to see a technology evolve.
beautiful component fabrication, wiring craftsmanship
I love the fact that this is home made
Would you consider adding reflector and lens / hood / focus assembly?
Beautiful... what kind of white LEDs it has used 22 MCD or not the light is very strong
Really cool build. I'd like to see what you can do with current technology.
The wiring looks so confusing but is probably easy. Pretty neat project!
That's crazy. Shows you how far LED tech has come. Single Cree XP70.2 pushes 3,000 lumens...
It has definitely got the MOTHS good seal of approval.
Well done. A good project and an excellent example of why most great inventors were amateurs. I think the guy who invented the lightbulb said that he invented 1000 non working light bulbs before he got it right and he considered the 1000 the real discovery.
Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb
+Skyler Smith Are you sure.
+Skyler Smith He did no such thing. Tesla did.
actually, he said 10,000. Call me a need as much as you want to, I don't give a crap.
+Skyler Smith Wrong!!! Try Nikola tesla >>>
I was a little unimpressed until I saw the comparisons lol. Well Done
