Maloree it's because she says in her biography she saw the writing on the wall concerning the exploitive nature of the music industry and didn't want to be part of it! She also stated it was either this song "candy" or the recording of the entire album that allowed her to come to this epiphany or understanding that she was by nature fueling the teen depression rate as a result of the music industry's influence on young teens! She also went on to explain that after realizing this; she herself slipped into a bought of depression and that's why for years you never heard from her again!
The James Corden interview brought me here. Mandy talked about her lack of dance ability. The editing was awesome because they literally did the fast cuts which was popular at the time!~!
Yep.Looking back in retrospect, the nostalgia feels great, but there's a small inkling of regret.Feel like I took it for granted.A decade I'm burdened to lament forever.
I knew..I knew this was the last period of my life when I didn't have to care..all I had to do was get good grades, and everything else was taken care of. No money problems, didn't care about the cops or getting in trouble with them, truly carefree.

Record companies stopped making this commercial Pop and R&B by 2010. They decided that they had "lost the war" against illegal digital streaming music. They shut down specialist divisions in Pop, Soul and R&B and Rap and Hip-Hop, in fact most styles of music except Country. This meant that new acts were not handled with unique teams of A&Rs, executives, songwriters, producers, stylists and media training and PR. They even stopped organizing tours and TV concerts to promote new talent on children's cable TV channels and weekend network TV. Now record companies sign acts only if they have their own established popularity from social media and some talent. They will then either be hands off with them or too hands on with their career.
They were all competing against each other to be the "90s it girl' There was not really one emerging in the early 90s. The 80s proved there was a market for the 'girl next door' female icon with people like Cindy Lauper, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Janet Jackson. We still see it later on as well. Once these acts grew up, we got Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, etc. There will always be a market for the female singer that young girls can see themselves in.
Haven’t heard this song for more than a decade… just came here after hearing it again in rebel wilson’s movie senior year… the nostalgic feeling is real.
I remember when this came out, as a teenage girl of about the same age. It's awesome how far she's come and all she's done. I love her in "This is Us" which I watch most nights. She has such a great smile too!
Wow… here’s to the 90s, this song says so much about how we were then. So much more enthusiasm, freedom, and overall happiness it was to live in USA then. I miss it so much.
I was 20 when this came out. I was heavily into my rap, hip hop at the time. But when I heard this song, I went out and bought the single. Because fuck it. Its awesome.
For some reason, maybe the way the intro is filmed, I get that distinct pre 9/11 US feeling, like 1999 was the height of American peace, prosperity, and optimism. It makes me deeply miss that time period, even though I hated this song back then.
That's EXACTLY what I felt when it started. I thought, "Ahh, the pre-9/11 days." 1998/1999 was an awesome time style-wise. I just loved the whole Buffy dark lightness of it all. I don't know how to describe it. I think I'll call it pop-goth.
Actually, this is like an exaggerated, but accurate representation of the street I grew up on. There were about a half dozen families with kids, all the same age range, all in the same school. This is what our summer holidays looked like, right down to the ice cream truck. The whole gang of us played in the street all summer, and around supper time, you would hear a parent call their kids in to come eat. After dinner, we would be right back outside until the streetlights came on. One of the dads built a treehouse in their backyard and it soon became our clubhouse. My childhood was wonderful ❤️
+Yel Vall Lmao, I am your age right now as you was when this song was released! I love 80's, 90's and 00's music! Much better than the mainstream 10's music, even tho some less popular artists have great music in this decade, only you have to find them! :D
Take me back to Hit Clips, TRL, music videos being played all day, playing outside, and no social media 😭😭😭. Mandy is that girl. Put respect on my queen 👑
Sol Winchester No, Mandy Moore was not a singer of A*Teens. It is a Swedish band like Abba. In contrast Mandy Moore is an American pop idol. I also like the song "Candy" very much.
Aww back in the day, when there was no better way to show your feelings for someone than a supposedly unrehearsed, yet perfectly performed, choreographed dance routine with all your friends in a random car park... those were the days.
Mandy now says that her first album was garbage and she wishes she could give everyone who bought it a refund, but I'll be damned if this isn't the catchiest bit of 90s nostalgia ever.
Whenever I hear or see the word, "candy," these days, I still think of this song. I was in my 40s when this song came out and am in my 60s now. I loved this tune back then, and I still dig it today.

What do you call...normal??
Yeah, she probably would have turned out like Britney.
This era of pop was simply the best.
1000%
The James Corden interview brought me here. Mandy talked about her lack of dance ability. The editing was awesome because they literally did the fast cuts which was popular at the time!~!
Same! I came to check out her inability to dance haha
Goland454 me 2
Goland454 also talked about it on jimmy fallo
Goland454 those fast cuts helped Jessica Simpson as well.

the 90s when we were happy and we didn't know
Yep.Looking back in retrospect, the nostalgia feels great, but there's a small inkling of regret.Feel like I took it for granted.A decade I'm burdened to lament forever.
Mandy my sweet candy
True words!
TheRealMissLorena this 2000 we were still happy
I knew..I knew this was the last period of my life when I didn't have to care..all I had to do was get good grades, and everything else was taken care of. No money problems, didn't care about the cops or getting in trouble with them, truly carefree.
I miss 1999 so much!!! That was such an amazing year.
It was a great year to be a teen!
Absolutely! I was 14 at the time.

Who would have thought 20 years later Mandy would be our favorite mother in television on This is Us. Imagine still crushing on a middle aged Mandy, lol, that's me!
This is us, man. This is us...
I’m more familiar with her role as Rapunzel in Tangled
shes 37 omg thats not middle aged. thats just an adult

she was fifteen when this song was released!! it's so young
I don't why Mandy would ever apologize for this song.
It's so early 2000s ICONIC
She was bit shy did like dressing up all the time she just wanted to be her but she free spirit. She is just sweet like this song.
It was released in the end of the 90s
@@LBrooks_037 yes but its so late 90s that its almost 2000s lol the aesthetics and the style started to visibly shift from the 90s to the 2000s at this point so its also very 2000s
Exactly!
She apologized because this song is a rip off of this song : th-cam.com/video/z4n6ymEMQmk/w-d-xo.html

If you had that Walkman/portable cd player, you were the shit. You probably got it at Sam goody after saving your allowance for months on end. Thinking the cheap batteries would work just as well(they didn't). And the "anti skip" feature. Ugh the nostalgia.
Jessica Jennifer omg Sam Goody!!!! ugh take me back i don’t like it here!!!
Yeah, "anti-skip." Go run with that thing, or walk fast.
I had my cd player in my picket for one solitary day of school. MIStake. that day I invented this new kind of mosey so I could still walk to class, cause 10 seconds antiskip juust iisnt enoough..
I had a white Sony CD player my dad bought me. Loved that thing. I had Mandy's headphones with it, those were super popular.
TangibleNought I had Mandy’s headphones too and a silver cd handheld with an LED screen ughhhghhhhgghh I miss those times
You might be cool, but you’ll never be as cool as Mandy Moore with a CD player and big headphones!
I remember those well and had the same ones back in 2000.
In 2000 i used play game boy color
@Karl M ya men i was like 7 in that time
@Karl M back when life was simple not like today fucking i phones ruining people life
@Karl M ya that right i miss those time. Anytime i start thinking my childhood life i get this weird feeling on my stomach 😂😂
I get this song stuck in my head at least once a month and can’t get it out until I come here to listen to it.
I miss this era. It hurts to know how much time has passed.
With ya there.. definitely hurts, i only come here when i really need it, not too often or i'll be a wreck haha, cheers.

That laffy taffy green beetle just sent me over the edge! ❤😂 Good old 2000's. Fresh innocent music!
That is the Bernt custom. 99 body kit. Wish they would have showcased the car more (than the scooter) Innocent? (the character Mandy plays) precocious more like. sweet tune though
I used to have that car back in the early 2000”s haha
This! The vibes are just really nostalgic
I wish they still made cars that looked good
Record companies stopped making this commercial Pop and R&B by 2010.
She is soooo pretty!
Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and Cristina Aguilera. They were like the Spice Girls but separated. Late 90's and early 2000's ROCK!
Blonde icons💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The 90's did have great music though, as soon you left the pop section!
As someone there I can confirm this
They were all competing against each other to be the "90s it girl' There was not really one emerging in the early 90s.
And Willa Ford
Crazy she was only 15 when this came out! So much nostalgia.
I remember calling KISS FM to request this song and waiting by my radio to record it on a cassette tape.
You rule for bringing back that suppressed memory!
Oh man! What a memory.
Somewhere in a dark corner of my parents' house exists a box of old cassettes of mine. I gotta find them lol.
Looking at your profile picture, this is alarming 😟
Oh shit your frinkin old
Omg yess. Same
This just caused me to fall down a good 10-min rabbit hole of listening to Mandy Moore’s “Candy” era and reliving my pre-teen years. 💜

The 90s were the best
I remember when this came out, as a teenage girl of about the same age. It's awesome how far she's come and all she's done. I love her in "This is Us" which I watch most nights. She has such a great smile too!
Does she do Rapunzel's voice from Tangled?
I think so.. I've never seen it but heard the song she sings and like playing it for my baby
I'm really happy she's still working.
She's amazing in This Is Us.
@@smurfylee Yes, this is the same person who voiced Rapunzel from Tangled.
ShaiyaStudios awesome comment! How does it feel to be so old now? 😂👌🏽do you have nostalgia for late 90s/early 00s things.
Yes, I have nostalgia pretty much every day. I have this song and others on my mp3 player.

“You’re love’s as sweet as candy. I’ll be forever your’s. Love always, Mandy” is ICONIC
For some reason, maybe the way the intro is filmed, I get that distinct pre 9/11 US feeling, like 1999 was the height of American peace, prosperity, and optimism. It makes me deeply miss that time period, even though I hated this song back then.
I got that exact feeling with the opening sequence
A perfect piece of suburban Americana in that opening shot.
That's EXACTLY what I felt when it started. I thought, "Ahh, the pre-9/11 days." 1998/1999 was an awesome time style-wise. I just loved the whole Buffy dark lightness of it all. I don't know how to describe it. I think I'll call it pop-goth.
Do you miss it like candy?
I got that same feeling. '99 was the peak of the music industry too. 14.6 billion. Times were good.

She turned WAY better than all the other teenage singers from that time.
All-round artist, gorgeous with elegance and hard headed woman.
Love her.
You don't have to put others down just to lift her up
It was my music when I was 15, now 32 still jamming it, SOWHAAAT

it still should be like that tho
Omg I always found Mandy Moore so cringy because of the way she used to be so extra with her lips 😣😂😂

Take me back to Hit Clips, TRL, music videos being played all day, playing outside, and no social media 😭😭😭. Mandy is that girl. Put respect on my queen 👑
@Nicolette Nicotine haha of course!
Good god, the 90s really were a jailbait era of pop. I never really realized it back then, because...well, I'm Mandy Moore's age, but holy crap.
Lionx the director of this video was also in the porn industry, correct me if im wrong
Tre B this girl was singer of Ateens?
Sol Winchester No, Mandy Moore was not a singer of A*Teens. It is a Swedish band like Abba. In contrast Mandy Moore is an American pop idol. I also like the song "Candy" very much.
Tre B The overtly sexual faces she makes to the camera are awful. I think she's 14 hear. So creepy.

Aww back in the day, when there was no better way to show your feelings for someone than a supposedly unrehearsed, yet perfectly performed, choreographed dance routine with all your friends in a random car park... those were the days.
Ohh you too? Small world.
Omg take me back to the early 2000’s!
Mandy now says that her first album was garbage and she wishes she could give everyone who bought it a refund, but I'll be damned if this isn't the catchiest bit of 90s nostalgia ever.
